Getting To The Museum

The museum is located at 945 Magazine Street, nine blocks from Canal St. and the French Quarter

One of the easiest ways to get here is by using the streetcar. The closest stops are served by line 12 on St Charles Street at Lee Circle.

Alternatively, there are also bus stops very close to the National WW2 Museum on Magazine Street. These stops are serviced by lines 10, 11, and 100.

Threat From Tropical Cyclones

pose a severe threat to the area, and the city is particularly at risk because of its low elevation, because it is surrounded by water from the north, east, and south and because of Louisianas sinking coast. According to the , New Orleans is the nations most vulnerable city to hurricanes. Indeed, portions of have been flooded by the , the ,, in 1956, in 1965, in 1998, Hurricanes and in 2005, in 2008, and in 2020 with the flooding in Betsy being significant and in a few neighborhoods severe, and that in Katrina being disastrous in the majority of the city.

On August 29, 2005, storm surge from Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic failure of the levees, flooding 80% of the city. A report by the American Society of Civil Engineers says that had the levees and floodwalls not failed and had the pump stations operated, nearly two-thirds of the deaths would not have occurred.

New Orleans has always had to consider the risk of hurricanes, but the risks are dramatically greater today due to coastal erosion from human interference. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it has been estimated that Louisiana has lost 2,000 square miles of coast , which once protected New Orleans against storm surge. Following Hurricane Katrina, the Army Corps of Engineers has instituted massive levee repair and hurricane protection measures to protect the city.

The bus loading and unloading lane is behind the Museum on Magazine Street, on either side of Andrew Higgins Drive. From St. Charles Avenue, turn right onto Higgins Drive, take the first left onto Camp Street, the next right onto St. Joseph Street and then another immediate right onto Magazine Street. The bus lane is on the right side. Bus parking is available approximately two blocks away under the interstate overpass, on the left side of Magazine Street.

Band Of Brothers 20th Anniversary Symposium

The National WWII Museum is honored to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Band of Brothers miniseries premiere by hosting a daylong Symposium in New Orleans on Saturday, August 13, 2022*. Deborah joins us to share a few of the remarkable stories she discovered in her researchstories that remind us that even our smallest acts of kindness matter.

Deborah Hopkinson is the author of several nonfiction books about World War II, including We Had to Be Brave: Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport and We Must Not Forget: Holocaust Stories of Survival and Resistance, the latter of which was most recently named one of 20 Titles to Read/Watch by the New Orleans Public Library. Deborah joins us to share a few of the remarkable stories she discovered in her researchstories that remind us that even our smallest acts of kindness matter. During this webinar youll meet people through this book like Ruth Oppenheimer David, one of six sisters and brothers who survived thanks to their mothers tenacious efforts, and Vladka and Benjamin Meed, young Jewish resistance activists in Warsaw who fell in love and went on to help establish the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. About Us National World War Ii Museum

The US National World War II Museum in New Orleans tells the story of the war, focusing particularly on amphibious attacks. Using a combination of artefacts, photos, documents, information panels, stories and films, the National World War II Museum looks at everything from the Pacific to the African and European theatres.

John E Kushner Restoration Pavilion

Look through the pavilions glass to witness the restoration of WWII artifacts in progress.

Currently under restoration is a Higgins Industries PT boat, PT-305 that was built in New Orleans and saw service in the Mediterranean theater.

When restoration is complete the patrol torpedo boat PT-305 will be launched into her home waters of Lake Pontchartrain.

Following two to three months of testing, PT 305 will be moved to a custom-built boathouse and opened to the public.

This complex is where you can view Beyond All Boundaries narrated by Tom Hanks.

Daily showtimes start at 10:00 am and run hourly until 4:00 pm. On Friday and Saturday, the last showing time is 5:00 pm.

On the second floor, you will find the Merchant Marine Gallery, a 940-square-foot gallery honoring civilian merchant mariners.
