How Long To Spend At Field Museum

Visiting The Field Museum

T. rex to Titanosaur: Big Dinosaur Changes Coming in 2018

We approached the Field Museum at the North Entrance, entering through the majestic column. Inside we quickly queued and were through in a matter of minutes. A coat and bag check is available near the museum store at the South Entrance. The museum is large and the small per item charge is well worth the cost.

The best plan of attack is to decide what you really want to see. In my family we each chose our number one must see everything else just happens as we come across it. It is probably best to realize that you won’t be able to see everything the museum has to offer in one visit.

Doug chose Inside Ancient Egypt. Entering the pyramid on the main level, you make your way through its chambers down to ground level. Filled with mummies, sarcophagus, and treasures it is an intriguing introduction to Egypt.

I chose the Hall of Gems, a magnificent room filled with brilliant, priceless jewels. It was interesting to see how gems are created and how even the smallest variable will create something different. Of course the cut stones and dramatic jewelry were beyond belief.

Brenna and Caelan, quite unanimously, chose the Play Lab. The Play Lab is hands on science and pure fun.

We probably saw half of what the Field Museum had to offer in the 4 hours we were there. We explored a deserted island in the Pacific, saw the Lions of Tsavo, toured China and learned about our evolving planet.

Sue The Tyrannosaurus Rex

SueTyrannosaurus rexSue

On May 17, 2000, the Field Museum unveiled Sue, the largest T. rex specimen discovered at the time. Sue has a length of more than 40.5 feet , stands 13 feet tall at the hips, and has been estimated at between 8.414 metric tons as of 2018. The specimen is estimated to be 67 million years old. The fossil was named after the person who discovered it, Sue Hendrickson, and is commonly referred to as female, although the dinosaur’s actual sex is unknown. The original skull is not mounted to the body due to the difficulties in examining the specimen 13 feet off the ground, and for nominal aesthetic reasons . An examination of the bones revealed that Sue died at age 28, a record for the fossilized remains of a T. rex until Trix was found in 2013. In December 2018 after revisions of the skeletal assembly were made to reflect new concepts of Sue’s structure, display of the skeleton was moved into a new suite in The Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet.

Tips For Visiting The Field Museum

A trip to the Field Museum has been a special treat throughout my life. I loved it so much, I spent two summers working there in high school and college!

It is a bit of a splurge for the average family to visit. Basic admission runs $80 for two adults and two kids and that doesnt include parking. Family memberships are $150, which is less than two visits for most families, so it may be a worthwhile investment to get the membership.

When my family goes, we always make a day of it. We pack a lunch and have a picnic near the north entrance and enjoy the boats, runners, and quintessential skyline view. Food carts and a lower-level cafeteria are available, but we take advantage of the museums policy to allow you to leave and reenter the same day.

We always visit our absolute favorites and my top picks for kids: Sue the T-rex, the mummies, and the Pawnee Earth Lodge. The basement has private and quiet mothers rooms.

Collection Care And Management

Field Museum collections are professionally managed by collection managers and conservators, who are highly skilled in preparation and preservation techniques. In fact, numerous maintenance and collection management tools were and are being advanced at Field Museum. For example, Carl Akeleys development of taxidermy excellence produced the first natural-looking mammal and bird specimens for exhibition as well as for study. Field Museum curators developed standards and best practices for the care of collections. Conservators at the Field Museum have made notable contributions to conservation science with methods of preservation of artifacts including the use of pheromone trapping for control of webbing clothes moths. In a modern collections-bearing institution, the vast majority of the scientific specimens and artifact are stored in specially designed collection cabinets, placed in containers made of archival materials, with labels printed on acid-free paper, and specimens and artifact are stored away from natural light to avoid fading. Preservation fluids are continuously monitored and in many collections humidity and temperature are controlled to ensure the long-term preservation of the specimens and artifacts.
