Meet The History Of Pain In St Augustine

St. Augustine is known for its history but one museum isnt content with talking about the sunny side of how things used to be.

At the Medieval Torture Museum in the heart of downtown, eerily realistic wax figures endure the most sadistic methods of inflicting misery ever created by man.

Over the course of 4,000 square feet, patrons will see hundreds of displays recreated from historic documents as to the practices and systems for death and dismemberment in the age of superstition and plague.

You can even interact with some of the exhibits, finding out which stress positions you would least like to have been trapped in.

But it isnt all bad. Attached to the museum for a separate ticket price is the Micro Masterpieces Collection. Through special microscopes, get a look at a gallery of paintings and sculptures no bigger than the tip of a pen. Etchings on rice and camels squeezing through the eyes of needles make a big impression for something so small.

Why tiny art and Iron Maidens go hand in hand isnt clear, but the Micro Masterpieces make a good palate cleanser.

Escape From The St Augustine Medieval Torture Museum

Come explore the dark side of one of the darker periods of human history with a visit to the Medieval Torture Museum in St. Augustine, FL if you dare.

St Augustine was founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, making it the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the continental United States. These facts alone make St Augustine the perfect home for a Medieval Torture Museum.

The history of mans inhumanity to man is a long and unfortunate one. Its miserable thread leads from the mists of prehistory all the way up to the modern day. The Medieval Torture Museum offers a long, unblinking gaze at this discomfiting history. The museums gory displays will intrigue fans of history, horror, and human behavior. Children and those who are sensitive or squeamish, however, would do best to move along.

Not For The Faint Of Heart

Medieval Torture Museum

The interior of the 4,000 square foot Medieval Torture Museum resembles a dungeon. Candle-lit rooms, blood smeared walls, and a soundtrack of moans, drips, and sawing let you know this is not your average museum.

Museum exhibits contain hundreds of different torture implements and images of torture. More than this, disturbingly realistic victims and their tormentors populate many of the exhibits. The displays are gruesome and horrifying, looking more like stills from scary movies than museum exhibits.

Here a person is being roasted alive inside a large bronze bull. There a desiccated corpse dangles, broken and left to rot on the wheel. Youll see racks, saws, bone crushers, witch baths, iron maidens, pillories, and other horrors. Historical documents, illustrations, and a variety of informational panels support the exhibits.

You can even participate. Several of the displays allow you to set them in motion or experience their effects. Take a seat in the spiked chair or weigh yourself to see if youre a witch .

It would be easy to mistake the exhibits as little more than gratuitous gore. The museums goal, however, is to educate and discourage not titillate.

Micro Masterpieces Art Gallery

After so much ugliness, you deserve a chance to see some of the amazing beauty that we humans can also create. How about a visit to the Micro Masterpieces Art Gallery, located inside St Augustines Medieval Torture Museum?

Micro Masterpieces is a premiere gallery of tiny, handcrafted artworks known as micro-miniatures. The miniature pieces on display include paintings, etchings, sculptures, and even books. Today, micro-miniature sculptors often rely on microscopes to create their pieces. Can you imagine painting a detailed portrait on the side of a poppy seed?

Many of the pieces are mounted inside the eye of a needle or at the end of a human hair and have to be seen to be believed. Dont miss it!

Medieval Torture Museum Sells ’emotion’ To Those Who Dare To Enter

Tucked away in a second-floor annex off bustling St. George Street is the Medieval Torture Museum which invites visitors to travel down a dark candlelit hallway and, accompanied by a gothic soundtrack of clangs and bangs, explore room after room filled with all manner of torture devices. From wrought-iron neck constraints to wooden gallows, guests are given more than passing glimpse of the darker side of humanity: the ways man has used to kill one another throughout the centuries.

Do people come out of morbid curiosity? Historical interest? For the thrills and chills?

All of the above, according to owner Eugene Grach.

Our main product is emotion, said Grach.

Since opening in June, more than 12,000 visitors have toured what Grach said is the largest collection of torture instruments in the Western hemisphere. With this being its first Halloween season, the museum is expecting even larger-than-usual crowds over the next few days.

Grach said he fell into the role of proprietor of the macabre somewhat by accident.

I dont even watch scary movies, he laughed.

Originally from the Ukraine, Grach worked in the real estate and construction business before moving to Miami several years ago. He said he and his friends would often toss around entrepreneurial concepts for new businesses.

But why St. Augustine?

St. Augustine is the only city in the United States that is the closest to European and feels like a historical city, Grach said.
