Best Art Museum New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art Tour 5th Avenue

1071 Fifth Avenue

Walking north, the next stop on the New York City Museum Mile is the Guggenheim. When this New York museum first opened the building in which the Guggenheim houses its treasures was a show-stopper. It still is.

In a city of sharp angles just look at the surrounding skyscrapers and NYs street grid to understand The Guggenheim is a spiraling, windowless, near-fanciful building. Even its interior a ramp that spirals around the circular building breaks all the rules of museum architecture. It is also considered one of the significant architectural achievements of the 20th century.

The museum boasts a range of modern artwork including works by Chagall, Miró, Kandinsky, Brancusi, Picasso, Mondrian and many others. But youll only see a snippet of the collection at any time. The main gallery is utilized for temporary exhibits, and part of the permanent collection is changed periodically.

Upper Fifth Avenue/millionaire’s Row

In the late 19th century, the very rich of New York began building mansions along the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 59th Street and 96th Street, looking onto Central Park. By the early 20th century, the portion of Fifth Avenue between 59th and 96th Streets had been nicknamed “Millionaire’s Row“, with mansions such as the Mrs. William B. Astor House and William A. Clark House. Entries to Central Park along this stretch include Inventor’s Gate at 72nd Street, which gave access to the park’s carriage drives, and Engineers’ Gate at 90th Street, used by equestrians.

A milestone change for Fifth Avenue came in 1916, when the grand corner mansion at 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue that James A. Burden Jr. had erected in 1893 became the first private mansion on Fifth Avenue above 59th Street to be demolished to make way for a grand apartment house. The building at 907 Fifth Avenue began a trend, with its 12 stories around a central court, with two apartments to a floor. Its strong cornice above the fourth floor, just at the eaves height of its neighbors, was intended to soften its presence.

This area contains many notable apartment buildings, including 810 Fifth Avenue and the Park Cinq, many of them built in the 1920s by architects such as Rosario Candela and J. E. R. Carpenter. A very few post-World War II structures break the unified limestone frontage, notably the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum between 88th and 89th Streets.

New York City as a premier worldwide tourist destination has many activities that attract millions of people a year such as going out to eat, viewing historical landmarks, shopping, and visiting museums.

Worldclass Museums On Fifth Avenue

The Upper East Side holds a string of topnotch museums on Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 110th streets. IMO, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Ave., is the jewel in the crown. But it all depends on the interests of visitors. For example, on this visit to NYC, I wanted to see the portrait of Adele Bauer Bloch, made famous in the United States by the recent film, “Woman in Gold,” starring Helen Mirren. That masterpiece hangs in a room devoted to Gustav Klimt at Neue Galerie New York, 1048 Fifth Ave. This work proved to be even better than I expected it to be.Other museums on this mile, which is actually a few blocks more than 1 mile, include:Solomon R. Guggenheim, 1071 Fifth National Academy Museum and School, 1083 Fifth The Jewish Museum, 1109 Fifth Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Museum of African Art, 1280 Fifth Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum, off Fifth at 2 East 91st St. I enjoy walking up Museum Mile on the sidewalk that borders Central Park. The views into this vast green expanse are lovely. There are also bicycles to rent just before the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but they seem to go quickly. For those planning to be in New York City in June, the Museum Mile Festival 2016 is scheduled for June 14 from 6-9 p.m. on Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th streets. In addition to free admission to participating museums, there will be live music and other events.

Make The Most Of Your Visit

Museum Mile, 5th Avenue, NYC

As you can imagine, Museum Mile is an incredible concentration of art and culture, sure to overload the senses. But with a little planning of priorities, you can make the most of your time, whether a few hours or a few days. Do you have a certain ethnic interest? Is modern art your fascination? Perhaps you want a dose of pure New York history. You’ll find it all on Museum Mile.

Shops On Fifth Avenue In New York

The most recognized street when shopping in New York is Fifth Avenue between 49th Street and 60th Street. Here you will see one luxury brand after another and retail space is among the most expensive in the world.

Next to the popular Apple Store on 5th Ave which was newly renovated in 2019 and famous for its glass cube entry, you will find Tiffany & Co. and Gucci next to the Trump Tower. The Apple Store is one of my 34 favorite flagship stores in NYC and should be on your list when you love shopping!

Below is a list of the biggest name-brand shops along the renowned avenue in our Fifth Avenue Shopping Guide.

Somehow Theres Confusion Over The Number Of Museums

Officially there are six different museums designated as museum milers. They are the El Museo del Barrio Museum of the City of New York The Jewish Museum Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. They all sponsor the New York City Museum Mile Festival in June each year.

There is, however, confusion as to how many museums there are on the Mile. NYC & Company, the official tourism arm of the city, lists seven. The Museum Mile Festival lists a total of both six and nine official museums on the same website.

To complicate things even more, there are other museums along the way that arent included. One, for example, is the Henry Clay Frick House , which houses the excellent Frick Collection. Another isThe Africa Center, formerly known as Museum for African Art at 110th Street.

The Africa Center extends the mile a bit further, but whos really counting? After all, the designated New York City Museum Mile is actually 1.2 miles long, not one mile.

The following seven museums are the official New York museums on Museum Mile. Each is a jewel in New Yorks cultural crown and well worth visiting any time of the year, especially during the winter months.

The two times Ive walked the Mile Ive found it best to start at 105th St. in the morning and walk south finishing up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You may want to enhance your visit and have lunch or dinner there, as well.
