Norman Foster Has Designs On The Norton Museum Of Art

On opening day of Art Basel 2013 in Miami Beach, a striking man with a whisper of close-cropped white hair, sporting a smart cream-colored blazer, revealed an architectural plan that will double the gallery space at the Norton Museum of Art, add new indoor and outdoor amenities and reconfigure the West Palm Beach landmark to reflect its original 1941 design.

Norman Foster founder of London-based Foster + Partners, the international architecture and design firm behind the plan needed no introduction. With buildings to his credit on six continents, offices around the world and a plethora of awards , Lord Foster, as hes often addressed since being honored with a life peerage in the Queens Birthday Honors List of 1999, is one of the worlds most renowned architects.

I do what I do for its own sake hopefully to bring some light and joy to those who encounter and use the buildings, Foster says.

From the Hearst Tower in New York, the Reichstag in Berlin and the Viaduc de Millau said to be the worlds tallest bridge to Londons striking 30 St Mary Axe, aka The Gerkin, Foster is behind some of the worlds most iconic buildings.

Foster is also an art collector. The works that we acquire have a resonance with our interests and passions. They are by relatively unknown younger artists, as well as more established and familiar names.

Design Features: The main entrance of the museum will be relocated to the west to create a welcoming presence on South Dixie Highway. European Art At Norton Museum: Monet And Picasso

Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida

During the height of Nortons collecting in the first half of the 20th century, European art was viewed as vastly superior to all others by collectors and critics on both sides of the Atlantic. The Norton features prime examples from most of the major figures, one highlight being Claude Monets Gardens of the Villa Moreno, Bordighera .

Monet is best known for his paintings of northern France, but he journeyed south as well. This toasty, luminous picture set on the Italian Riviera is as good as youll see of the work he did there.

Paul Gauguins Christ in the Garden of Olives stands as another highlight. This painting, which also serves as a self-portrait, may represent the crown jewel of the entire museum. A strong argument could be made that this is the most important piece of Modern art in the state of Florida and perhaps all of the Southeast.

This painting is so extraordinary to Gaugins body of work that it was loaned to the National Gallery of Art in London for its blockbuster Gaugin portraits exhibit which closed January 26 of 2020. The picture receives mention in the third paragraph of the National Gallerys exhibition overview online, before mention of any other work from the show.

Gilbane provided construction management at-risk services for the design and construction of a comprehensive museum renovation and expansion at the Norton Museum of Art. The museum houses a portion of the nations premier collections of American, Chinese, Contemporary, European and Photographic art and has served as a cultural centerpiece for art in South Florida since its founding in 1941. The new museum accommodates increased gallery and exhibitions space and provides additional educational and program space. The project scope included dramatically re-orienting the museum entrance from the south side of the facility to the west side along the main thoroughfare of S. Dixie Highway.

The New Nortons design added approximately 50,000 SF of program space with a new 200-seat, state-of-the-art auditorium, meeting rooms, new entrance space with 44-foot high ceilings in the great hall, arrival forecourt, restaurant, 15,000 SF of new gallery space and support spaces. The project included the upgrade and re-use of approximately 60,000 SF of existing space and demolition of approximately 35,000 SF. The incorporation of a glass-walled sculpture colonnade, under a monumental canopy, opens onto a 9,000 SF sculpture garden. Additional unique features include a reflective pool, a 40-foot cantilevered roof canopy, precast panels and extensive exterior glass system.

Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach in Miami

The inaugural gala for the Norton Museum of Art was held in West Palm Beach, Florida, celebrating its transformation by Foster + Partners. The renovation and expansion of the museum has added new galleries and much needed facilities for its visitors, while reinstating the axial arrangement and clarity of circulation of the original 1940s building.

Above all, the museum is no longer surrounded by car parking, but is the focus of an extensive, new sub-tropical garden displaying a magnificent collection of contemporary sculpture. The opening gala was attended by, amongst others, Executive Director Hope Alswang, friends of the museum Ken Griffin and Leonard Lauder, Norton trustees Ronnie Heyman and Gil Maurer, and Lord Foster.

The Norton was built in 1941 as an elegant series of Art Deco-inspired single-story pavilions around a central courtyard. Subsequent expansion broke the symmetry of the original arrangement, and the axial configuration was undermined by the relocation of the main entrance to the side of the building. The new masterplan restores the logic of the original plan, reasserting the clarity of the main circulation, balancing the different building heights, introducing new exhibition galleries and education spaces.

American Art At Norton Museum: Pollock And Okeeffe

Palm Beach

Nortons collecting didnt ignore American painters, nor have successive generations of museum acquisition committees. Thank them for the purchase of Jackson Pollocks 1945 canvas, Night Mist, a fidgety, kinetic painting set against a most unusual black background.

Ernest Lawsons Hoboken Water Front is a bruising, brawling, hairy knuckled painting. Grimy, choking exhaust belches from the smokestacks of ships crammed into harbor, roiling the water. Feel the presence of men working and financing these ships as they try wrestling princely or piddling rewards from their toil on the water.

Catch your breath with Georgia OKeeffes serene Red Flower or Edward Hoppers breathless vacated New York apartment.

The Big Apple also serves as subject for Stuart Davis eye-popping New York Mural , another pickup after Nortons death. Davis seemed to paint with brighter colors and more precise lines than any of his contemporaries. You could slice cheese with his lines theyre so sharp. His colors appear fluorescent, as if hes painting with neon.

Norton Museum Of Art January Exhibitions

If a new year ushers in a restored resolve to visit Palm Beach Countyâs artistic havens, visit the three new exhibitions at the Norton Museum of Art

If a new year ushers in a restored resolve to visit Palm Beach Countyâs artistic havens, the recently reopened Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach is the ideal starting point. Beginning January 2, its galleries will house three exhibitions that navigate the realms of immigration, systemic injustice, and racialized violence.

The Norton will host Colombian artist MarÃa BerrÃoâs first solo museum exhibition, âEsperando Mientras la Noche Floreceâ in the museumâs eighth Recognition of Art by Women series. BerrÃo creates expansive layers of Japanese paper that come together as fantastical natural vistas or modest domestic scenes. She explores the duality of resilience and vulnerability, particularly through her depictions of such dichotomies found in nature and within women. The Brooklyn-based artistâs survey will coincide with a residency through February.

Venture through the museum to âJose Alvarez : The Krome Drawings,â featuring 30 ink portraits Alvarez made during his time in Miamiâs Krome immigration detention center a decade ago. The moving portraits of fellow detainees will be accompanied by their stories, humanizing and illuminating an often-shrouded issue.
