As the city with the worlds largest Jewish population, New York City boasts several Jewish museums. Each chronicles different aspects of the Jewish experience. The most prominent museums are the Jewish Museum on the Upper East Side, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park, the Center For Jewish History in Chelsea and of course the Museum At Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side. I visited all of them.
Jewish Museum
I began my exploration at the Jewish Museum, which is housed in an early French Renaissance style mansion, originally owned by Jewish banker Felix M. Warburg. Alongside its main exhibit, the museum also hosts temporary ones. On the bottom floor, visitor can enjoy a meal at a new outpost of the famed Jewish appetizing store Russ & Daughters with no entrance admission required.
The museum redefines the definition of a Jewish museum. All the current exhibitions feature Jewish artists. Yet, most of their art does not overtly relate to Jewish history or culture. A highlight exhibition showcased the work of Florine Stettheimer born to a wealthy German Jewish family. She painted beautiful, colorful paintings depicting the 1920s Jazz Age. Featured paintings include self-portraits, images of her sisters, theater scenes, shoppers as well as multiple images of nude women and one Christmas scene.

The Jewish Museum Proposes Temporary Mural At 1109 Fifth Avenue On The Upper East Side

The Jewish Museum on Manhattans Upper East Side has proposed a vibrant, multi-story mural to be installed at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 92nd Street. The neon blue artwork was designed by Lawrence Weiner in 2011 and reads All the stars in the sky have the same face, in Hebrew, Arabic, and English lettering.
Located at 1109 Fifth Avenue, the Jewish Museum was originally constructed as a private single-family home know as Warburg Mansion. The structure was completed in 1908 by architect Charles Pierrepont Henry Gilbert, often abbreviated as C. P. H. Gilbert. The home was commissioned by Jewish philanthropist Felix M. Warburg and sits directly across from Central Park.
The Jewish Museum was established within Warburg Mansion in 1947 and designated a New York City landmark in 1981.

Existing conditions at the Jewish Museum
While the proposed mural is a stark departure from the structures ornate French Renaissance façade, its temporary nature and positive message is a selling point for the ruling members of the Landmarks Preservation Commission who must sign off on construction despite existing DOB approvals.
To support the temporary artwork, submitted proposals specify the installation of temporary bracket channels and steel anchors that will be drilled into the limestone façade. Galvanized steel brackets will then be hung from the anchors and hooked into the polyester mesh mural banner.

The Jewish Museum and Film at Lincoln Center are delighted to continue their partnership to bring you the 32nd annual New York Jewish Film Festival, taking place January 12 23, 2023, presenting films from around the world that explore the Jewish experience.

Why You Should Go
Just like Levy’s, you don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the Jewish Museum. The Jewish experience is the lens through which art and history are examined at the museum, but it is not a lens that in any way obscures the creative genius of its subjects. The scope and influence of Jewish artists, writers and philosophers are so broad that few exhibits hosted at the Jewish Museum would be out of place at the Met, the MoMA or the Guggenheim, either in quality or content. A day at the museum is not spent in the esoterics of a minority culture but among the topics universal to humanity.

Whats remarkable about so many of the Upper East Sides museums is what they have in common. Many of these museums are in mansions that at one point were homes to NYCs ultra-rich. And while some of these men no doubt had the idea in their head of immortalizing themselves, one day, with a museum, these properties werent specifically built for their current use.

As of the 2000 census, twenty-one percent of the population was foreign born of this, 45.6% came from Europe, 29.5% from Asia, 16.2% from Latin America and 8.7% from other areas. The female-male ratio was very high with 125 females for 100 males. The Upper East Side contains a large and affluent Jewish population estimated at 56,000. Traditionally, the Upper East Side has been dominated by wealthy White Anglo-Saxon Protestant families.
Given its very high population density and per capita income , the neighborhood contains the greatest concentration of individual wealth in Manhattan. As of 2011, the median household income for the Upper East Side was $131,492. The Upper East Side maintains the highest pricing per square foot in the United States. A 2002 report cited the average cost per square meter as $8,856 however, that price has noticed a substantial jump, increasing to almost as much as $11,200 per square meter as of 2006. There are some buildings which cost about $125 per square foot . The only public housing projects for those of low to moderate incomes on the Upper East Side are located just south of the neighborhood’s northern limit at 96th Street, the Holmes Towers and Isaacs Houses. It borders East Harlem, which has the highest concentration of public housing in the United States.
Primary And Secondary Schools
The New York Public Library operates four branches in the Upper East Side.
- The 67th Street branch is located at 328 East 67th Street. The branch, a Carnegie library, opened in 1905 and was restored in the 1950s and in 2000. The two-story, 14,000-square-foot structure resembles the Yorkville branch library in design.
- The Yorkville branch is located at 222 East 79th Street. The branch, a Carnegie library, opened in 1902 and was renovated in 19861987. The three-story space is listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places.
- The Webster branch is located at 1465 York Avenue. The branch was founded in 1893 as the Webster Free Library, and the current Carnegie library structure opened in 1906.
- The 96th Street branch is located at 112 East 96th Street. The branch, a Carnegie library, opened in 1905 and was restored in 1991.
