    From Portraits To Landscapes

Instead of arranging the works in chronological order, Brown who co-curated the exhibition with Bemberg Foundation director Philippe Cros chose to display them by themes.

The first of the four sections, Portraits and Beauty, starts with Sibylle of Cleves. Brown stressed that, in viewing these portraits, it becomes clear the people who sat for the artists chose their attire to show their status.

Sibylle is portrayed with a monogrammed gold chain and pearly studded headdress, he said. The imagery portrays her as a virtuous and strong leader. And that was the case she was ruling Saxony and was considered a heroic figure.

The paintings all have great stories to tell. I try to arrange them in a way that allows visitors, docents and members to maybe make unexpected connections among the works.

The exhibitions other three sections are titled Faith and Mythology, Interiors and Intrigue, and Outdoor Pursuits. The last displays landscapes that emphasize light, color and peoples leisurely activities. An increasingly sought-after art form in the 17th and 18th centuries, these often-large works found their way into many palaces and wealthy estates. In this exhibition, they provide the grand finale.

A few standouts in the exhibition will be displayed in special archways in each gallery. One of them is The Charlatan, by Venetian artist Pietro Longhi, whose art was often satirical.
