The National Center for Civil and Human Rights is an engaging cultural attraction that connects the American civil rights movement to the current global human rights movement. Exhibits use powerful imagery, historic artifacts, and compelling storytelling to inspire visitors.
Like most museums, it is now operating on a system of timed tickets, which you must purchase in advance online. This is to limit crowd capacity and ensure social distancing.
The Center is currently open only 4 days a week. Museum hours:Thursday, Friday, and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
LAST ENTRY IS ONE HOUR PRIOR TO CLOSING TIME. A typical visit lasts approximately 90-120 minutes.

Atlanta Cyclorama And Civil War Museum

Cycloramas are pretty neat. They are essentially a circular panoramic painting that revolves around you showing scenes for a particular moment. The one at this museum depicts the Battle of Atlanta from the American Civil Warn and at one time was the largest oil painting in the world. The painting is about a hundred and twenty years old.
If youre interested, you can see a 20 minute documentary about the restoration of the painting this is a recommended activity said to make the visit that much more relevant. Visitors have also said that viewing the painting makes them feel as if theyre right there in the thick of the action.
Other items to note are the artifacts from the war and a diorama which contains a soldier with the facial features of Clark Gable. This is allegedly because, when the actors of Gone with the wind visited the museum, Gable said that only way exhibit could be more magnificent was if he himself was a part of it. Located a few miles away from the King site, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights is not an historic site. The impressive free-standing museum is part of the downtown Atlantas Centennial Park, which holds a cluster of popular tourist attractions including the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola.
Its location assures a steady flow of visitors, and its offerings, which include historical artifacts and interactive exhibits, are worthwhile if youre in the area.
The most notable exhibit is the lunch counter, which literally puts visitors in the seats of protesters. Guests sit down at replica counter, don headphones, and place their hands on the counter. They are immediately subjected to taunts and threats, giving a hint of the abuse sit-in protesters faced. A timer measures how long visitors can keep their hands on the counter. Its an effective and shaking experience, which remains with you. The experience is reminiscent of visiting the lunch counter at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro, NC, at the site of the original Woolworths counter sit-in.
Other exhibit areas includes Martin Luther King Jr.s letters and papers, including the early drafts of some of his famous speeches, and his Letter from the Birmingham Jail.

The Civil War In Georgia
The Civil War in Georgia is an animated map that displays U.S. and Confederate Army movements across the state. The timeline begins in May 1864 and runs through May 1865. King Historic Site From Birth To Grave
To understand the scope of the Rev. Kings legacy, one only need visit the National Park Services . Exhibits expertly capture Dr. Kings era and follow him from childhood to his historic role on the international stage. Introductory films offer a moving biography along with excerpts from his most famous speeches.King Historic Site, from birth to graveIf you have time, consider the fascinating tour offered by Tom Houck, a former driver for Martin Luther King, Jr. Not only will he point out the sites, but hell also share his personal stories about working for King and witnessing first-hand some of the most important events of the civil rights era.
While the visitors center is certainly worthwhile with thoughtful exhibits and films, a highlight is being able to visit Kings birth home, where he spent the first 12-years of his life. A walk through the home, located a block from the center at 501 Auburn Ave., humanizes King and brings him to life. Visitors learn that King was a typical young boy, who didnt like piano lessons, and rushed through grace at dinner time when he was hungry.
Its clear King grew up in a loving family. His father and grandfathers were ministers and the neighborhood was part of Atlantas Black middle class. While the home dates to 1895, it has been restored and is wheelchair accessible.
