Experience NHM This Fall 2021

While its best known for its movie stars, one of the City of Angels most elegant attractions is this gorgeous 1913 Beaux Arts palace. Like a smaller, west coast version of New Yorks American Museum of Natural History, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County contains a microcosm of the whole world, both indoors and out in the Southern California sunshine.

Highlights of the museum are an enormous Dinosaur Hall full of sea monster fossils and T. Rex skeletons, three halls worth of amazingly realistic wildlife habitat dioramas , and a 150,000-specimen Gem and Mineral Hall full of gold, diamonds and other sparkly distractions. But be sure not to miss the soaring Rotunda at the center of the building, with its intricate stained glass dome, graceful bronze statues, and colorful paintings by artist Charles R. Knight, which illustrate mid-20th-century scientists findings about the prehistoric world.

Youll rarely see a bigger collection of stuffed animals or a more opulent collection of pre-Columbian treasures. Try to avoid eye contact with the tarantula in the Insect Zoo, but seek out a unique collection of Zuni fetishes these tiny stone, bone and antler carvings found in a glass case by the ground floor stairs were made by the Zuni people, a Native American tribe from New Mexico.

Los Angeles has so many great museums! The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is one of the oldest cultural institutions in L.A. and is housed in a beautiful building that was built in 1913.We spent a day there on our most recent trip to L.A., and the whole family just loved every minute of it!There is SO much to see here!

One of the highlights of the museum is, of course, dinosaurs, and there are two impressive skeletons in the grand rotunda right in the middle of the museum.

As soon as you walk in, you know this is going to be great! The historical building itself is such a treat to take in and makes the perfect setting for the amazing collections that are housed here.

There are also some more modern building additions to the original building. All of the galleries and displays are beautiful.

The museum has room after room of amazing specimens covering the whole history of the natural world.

There are also many interactive, hands-on exhibits that draw kids into learning.

Our favorite exhibits were the Diorama Halls where African and North American animals are in realistic scenes of their natural habitats.

The kids were so enchanted and wanted to look at them again and again. They also insisted on taking a picture of every single one!

They are really so well done.

Other exhibits included the Hall of Birds,

an incredible Gem and Mineral Hall,

and Becoming Los Angeles, which covered the whole history of the L.A. area.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is a collections-based research and educational institution that relies on science to enhance our knowledge of the natural world.

The goal of science is to acquire ever-increasing understanding of the objects and events we encounter. Such understanding is obtained through the continual critical evaluation of testable hypotheses and theories.

Evolution is a central concept in modern science. Evolutionary theories are supported by evidence from such diverse fields as genetics, paleontology, chemistry, and physics. The use of evolutionary biology as a means of acquiring understanding is consistent with the overall goal of science, as the theories involved are available to critical evaluation. Evolutionary biology allows us to explain the amazing diversity of life on Earth today and how diversity has changed over time.

Because understanding evolution is important for both scientists and the public, the Natural History Museum emphasizes that evolutionary biology belongs in school curricula and textbooks as well as in public museums. Although the topic is sometimes portrayed as controversial, it is no more controversial among scientists than are the theories explaining gravity, light, sound, or electricity.

Good starting places for finding additional information about evolution and its relation to other concepts and issues include:
