Tatiana Bilbao Estudio: Architecture From Outside In

Floor 6

Mexico Citybased architect Tatiana Bilbao considers domesticity from policy to livability. Models, drawings, and photographs illustrate Bilbaos extensive research and proposals in response to how we live today. At the beginning of the design process, the architect and her firm Tatiana Bilbao Estudio take time to identify less visible external factors that influence and shape architecture, such as developer goals and civic regulations, as well as meeting with future inhabitants. This outside in approach is expansive, but yields greater understanding and accommodation for contemporary lifestyles.

Visitors are invited to consider how advocacy, city planning, architecture, and development shape society. The drawings, collage, and models on view represent built and unbuilt projects, and are shown together in a large-scale, hand-drawn landscape covering the gallery walls. One section of the exhibition brings into focus the San Francisco neighborhood Hunters Point, whose residents predominantly people of color have been subject to years of environmental injustice. Confronting the social and political contexts in which architects work, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio aims to prompt conversation around how to collaboratively transform formerly sequestered neighborhoods into sustainable, inclusive communities.

Beginnings Seen From The End: Alice Neel Maria Lassnig

Sometimes artists start out on a high level and improve. The point was made by an exemplary show of Alice Neels early paintings from the 1930s and 40s at Zwirner, an elaboration on her acclaimed retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And sometimes artists start better than they end up. Another singular show was Maria Lassnig: The Paris Years, 1960-1968, an valuable glimpse of the early career of the Austrian painter at Petzel . Ive always found Lassnigs mature figurative paintings arch and repetitive. Her climb to maturity was a delightful exploration of line and color infused with animation and humor. These early works are, to my mind, better than what came after.

Nature Humanity: Oxman Architects

What is the role of an architect in the age of climate change? Since 2010, Oxman studio founder, Neri Oxman, has asked whether the materials, tools, and construction of architecture are sustainable moving forward. Through thought-provoking projects that use new biomaterials and fabrication techniques, Oxman rethinks all facets of the field with a singular objective: to transition from valuing human material wealth that stakes claim to land and resources to a focus on environmental health that restores and advances natural balance to mutually benefit all. With nature as the primary client, the design practice upends the architectural legacy of a human-centered built environment and imagines a radically transformed future.

The Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art announces Reuse, Renew, Recycle: Recent Architecture from China, an exhibition highlighting a new generation of Chinese architects and their commitment to social and environmental sustainability. On view from September 18, 2021, through July 4, 2022, in the street-level galleries, the exhibition will present eight projects that speak to a multiplicity of architectural methodologies, ranging from the adaptive reuse of former industrial buildings, the recycling of building materials, and the reinterpretation of ancient construction techniques, to the economic rejuvenation of rural villages or entire regions through non-invasive architectural insertions. Anchoring the exhibition will be projects by Pritzker Prizewinning Amateur Architecture Studio , Archi-Union Architects , Atelier Deshaus , DnA_Design and Architecture , Studio Zhu Pei , Vector Architects , and Aga Khan Award laureate ZAO/standardarchitecture . Developed following a four-year research initiative, which has included extensive conversations with the architects and numerous site visits to all the projects presented, the exhibition will include models, drawings, photographs, videos, and architectural mock-ups drawn from a recent acquisition of some 160 works of Chinese contemporary architecture

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially “the Met“, is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments. The main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along the Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park on Manhattan‘s Upper East Side, is by area one of the world’s largest art museums. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from medieval Europe.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 to bring art and art education to the American people. The museum’s permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, , and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from 1st-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.

The Best Art Shows Of 2021 Were In Galleries

This fall a mood of elation was palpable in certain quarters of Manhattan, namely those neighborhoods dense with commercial art galleries. People giddily commented on the unusually high quality of the gallery scene as if art dealers had recommitted themselves to their calling and were bent on making up for the deprivations of lockdown. Several men had impressive shows Philip Guston, Beauford Delaney , David Salle and Alvaro Barrington come to mind. But what moved me most was the high frequency of outstanding solo presentations of art by women more than I could possibly mention here, even if I had been able to see them all. The shows touched on all phases of artistic development early, middle, late and the cumulative message concerned longevity: women have always been here, dedicating their lives to art.

Saints And Sin: Selections From The Permanent Collection By Black Artists

Through April 1, 2022

Saints and Sin: Selections from the Permanent Collection by Black Artists includes work by Benny Andrews, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence, Toyin Odutola, Alison Saar, Betye Saar, and Carrie Mae Weems. A highlight of the exhibition is the new acquisition, Kehinde Wileys St. Francis of Adelaide, 2006.

The exhibition is presented in unison with the amplification of the Black Lives Matter movement in the summer of 2020. It intends to provide a glimpse of the richness, variety and creative power of Black artists, underrepresented in museum collections, including our own. Formal purity and themes of innocence are intertwined with imagery laying bare the sin of systemic racism. Saints and Sin also includes recent acquisitions depicting Black artists.

Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.
