The museum completed the construction of a third hangar and hall of missiles in 2004. It now houses post-Cold War era planes such as the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bomber , the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk stealth ground attack aircraft and others. A fourth hangar was completed in 2016, to house the museum’s space collection, presidential planes, and an enlarged educational outreach area. Previously these collections were housed in an annex facility on Area B of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base . Because the annex was physically located on the base itself, museum guests were required to go through additional security checks before taking museum buses to the hangar.

For an additional fee, guests can view aviation- and space-oriented films in a large format theater interspersed primarily with other documentaries. In 2013, the Air Force Museum Theater was upgraded from IMAX to digital 3D. The renovation included a new stage, theater seats, and a new theater screen to support a broader range of programmingincluding educational presentations, live broadcasts and expanded documentary choices. It also included a 7.1 surround-sound system, audio devices for the hearing or visually impaired, and personal closed captioning systems.

The new building’s construction was entirely funded via private donations from several different sources.

Besides offering over 360 aircraft and missile displays, this museum attracts over one million visits every year. It actually opened in the early 1920s because Daytons McCook Field engineers began to realize the historical significance of their efforts. They started to collect and preserve related artifacts. The museum moved closer to its current location at what was then called Wright Field. It was housed in a lab building.

In the early 1930s, the WPA built a building and the collection was renamed to the Army Aeronautical Museum. After WWII, this then-private collection was called the Air Force Technical Museum. In the early 1950s, they made the museum public and gave it its first stand-alone facility. The first part of the museum was housed in a building that used to be a repair hanger.

The problem was that the space was too small for the growing collection. Some valuable displays had to be parked outside where they were constantly exposed to weather and other hazards. However, the current facility did not open until 1971. Even since that time, the current facility has more than tripled in size. In 2004, the museums name was changed to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Located near Dayton Ohio, the National Museum of the United States Air Force presents military aviation history in a gallery format, with over 400 vehicles on display in this free to the public museum.

Visitors will be able to see up close many rare and one-of-a-kind aircraft, including a Wright Modified B Flyer used to train new pilots in 1916. Those interested in America’s manned-moon missions can see a Mercury, Gemini capsuls and the Apollo 15 command module that circled the moon plus a U2 spy plane.

The museum is divided up into 8 major galleries that include Early Years, World War II Air Power, Modern Flight, Cold War, and Missile & Space. The Presidential, Research and Development, and the Air Park are located in other areas. The Air Park is located outside on a nearby runway. Bits and pieces of the B-24 “Lady Be Good” are arranged near signs that tell of ghostly activities around the artifacts of this “cursed” plane. It disappeared in 1943 during a mission over Italy, and wasn’t found until sixteen years later in the very un-Italian desert of Libya. A large stained glass window, transported from a Wheelus Air Force Base chapel in Libya, honors the original crew. “In memory of nine who made the desert a highway for our God.”

National Museum Usaf To Open An Aircraft One Day Each Month

Beginning in April 2021, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force will provide the opportunity for visitors to get an up-close look inside a different aircraft from the collection each month on select days from 11 a.m. 3 p.m. On Saturday, April 17, visitors will be able to walk through the AC-130A Spectre, which is a C-130 converted to a gunship and primarily used for night attacks against ground targets. Learn about this aircraft from six U.S. Air Force veterans: Col. Frank Alfter, Lt. Col. Larry Flinn, Col. Tom Gardner, Col. Carl Peirolo, Col. Bob Pinizzotto and Master Sgt. Shane Sprague. Each having served as a crew member for this type of aircraft and have knowledge of several other aircraft.

Look inside the cockpit of the F-22A Raptor on Saturday, May 8. The Raptor combines stealth, maneuverability and the ability to fly long distances at supersonic speeds in performance of air superiority and air-to-ground missions. The aircraft on display was one of nine F-22s built for Engineering, Manufacture and Development testing, and it rolled off the Lockheed Martin assembly line in Georgia in May 1999. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with Maj. James Miklasevich, a museum volunteer and F-22 Systems Engineer.
