Collected On This Day In 1952

Collected on July 28, 1952, this specimen was found near Nicktown, Cambria County by Hiliary Kline. Chicory was introduced from Eurasia and is a common roadside plant in Pennsylvania. Its bright blue flowers open in the morning and close by the afternoon. Chicory has a long history as a food source for humans, and there are several domesticated varieties. One such example is radicchio, which you can find in many grocery store salad mixes. Chicory roots have also been used as a coffee substitute or an additive to coffee grounds, and they are sold at some grocery stores. Chicory was famously used as a coffee substitute by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War.

Carnegie Museum Of Art

When Andrew Carnegie envisioned a museum collection consisting of the “Old Masters of tomorrow”, the Carnegie Museum of Art became, arguably, the first museum of modern art in the United States. Founded in 1895, today it continues showcasing contemporary art by staging the Carnegie International exhibition every few years. Numerous works from the International exhibitions have been acquired for the museums’ permanent collection including Winslow Homer‘s The Wreck and James A. McNeill Whistler‘s Arrangement in Black: Portrait of Señor Pablo de Sarasate . The Hall of Sculpture replicates the interior of the Parthenon. The Hall of Architecture contains the largest collection of plaster casts of architectural masterpieces in America and one of the three largest in the world. Opened in 1974, the Sarah Scaife Galleries Annex, was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes and Associates. The Sarah Scaife Foundation gift nearly doubled the exhibition square footage. The modernist addition was designed to not compete with the existing building. “Trustee James L. Winokur says of architect Edward Larrabee Barnes, “He kept the old building out front. He was not terribly concerned about getting credit, just concerned about doing the job right, and he did do it right.”

The museum’s permanent collection includes European and American decorative arts from the late seventeenth century to the present, works on paper, paintings, prints , sculptures and installations.

Wheelchair Availability And Accessibility

The museum is wheelchair accessible. Power assist doors are located at the museums main entrances at the front of the building on Forbes Avenue, at the rear of the building via the parking garage, and at the Portal Entry.

Standard, manual wheelchairs are available free of charge at the museum coat rooms on first-come, first-served basis. We also welcome your personal manual or motorized wheelchairs, walkers, or scooters. The museums dining areas, gift shops, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.
