Showcase: Bringing a new perspective to New York’s Guggenheim museum

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the main tourist attractions that Spain has to offer art lovers. In fact, since the opening of this museum on October 18, 1997, Bilbao has gone from being an industrial city to receiving many tourists each year, who come to see and enjoy the Guggenheim exhibitions.

The creation of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao appeared as part of a plan to renew the city, carried out in the 1990s by the Basque government in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, a private organization. While the public sector was in charge of providing funds for the project and facilitating the space in which the museum would be located, the private sector took charge of the administration and offered on loan the set of works that make up the core of the collection.

The result was a complete success, activating the economy of the city of Bilbao and putting the Basque Country in the spotlight of international tourism for art lovers. So much so that nowadays the ability of the development of a cultural institution to influence and help the local economy of a city is known as the ‘Bilbao Effect’.

Erics Visit In 90 Minutes

Because of the structure of the museum, its very easy to plan a visit that lasts 90 minutes . Head straight to the top of the museum and start walking down the ramp. Depending on the temporary exhibition, youll either spend more time on the upper levels or head down to the permanent collections. Its where youll be able to see the masterpieces by Picasso and Monet as well as Degas. Works by Kandinsky are also often on display.

While the MoMA boasts the more famous The Starry Night by van Gogh, the Guggenheim has the equally beautiful artwork Mountains at Saint-Rémy by the Dutch painter. It belongs to the Thannhauser collection and you will immediately see the artists handwork. If you are more into modern art, take a look at the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe. His portraits of fellow artists and celebrities are quite interesting.

I also like to have coffee before or after I visit the museum, but not at the museum cafe. I head to the Bluestone Lane Upper East Side Café which is just down the street. Dont forget to take some photos of the magnificent museum building before you enter or after your visit! Its a nice spot to commemorate your New York visit, so snap a selfie or two, too!

Guggenheim Gala Exhibits Encourage ‘engagement’

Dior and the Guggenheim Foundation enliven the arts through a series of ongoing solo exhibits launched during the 2021 annual gala.

The Guggenheim International Gala is held annually to commemorate the achievements of the museums under the care of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

The most recent gala, held on Nov. 17, 2021, focused on the works of contemporary artists Etel Adnan, Jennie C. Jones, Cecilia Vicuña and Gillian Wearing in ongoing solo exhibitions.

The gala, supported by fashion house Dior, also honored Phyllis and Bill Mack as “generous philanthropists and invaluable leaders of the Guggenheim Foundation for over 18 years”, the Foundation stated on its website.

“After canceling the 2020 gala and weathering such a challenging year, we believe that global support is critical to our recovery and our continued commitment to access and community engagement,” it added.

The cherry on top was a performance by New Zealand singer Lorde, who wore two different Dior outfits for the occasion. For her red carpet appearance, she donned a burned peach haute couture gown from Dior’s Autumn/Winter 2018 collection that reportedly took 300 hours to create, and then went for an onstage bling with a metallic suit inspired by one of Diors Spring/Summer 2022 ready-to-wear items that took 40 hours to finish.

Vasily Kandinsky is recognized as a major artistic innovator and painting theorist. In the opening decades of the 20th century, he was among those who advanced nonrepresentational modes of art-making to lasting effect. The artists stylistic evolution in this regard was intimately tied to his sense of place and the communities with which he engaged. Kandinsky gained insight from meaningful intersections with artists, musicians, poets, and other cultural producers, especially those who shared his transnational vision and experimental bent. Uprooted time and again, he adapted with his every relocation across Germany, back to Russia, and eventually to Franceall against the backdrop of the sociopolitical upheavals occurring around him.

Jean Dubuffet: Ardent Celebration

1st floor, gallery 105

A reflection of the artists innovative spirit, the works of Jean Dubuffet are the result of experiments with unorthodox methods and materials: sand, enamel, plaster, asphalt, cardboard, aluminum foil, foam rubber, etc., used to make surfaces with a patent material quality.

Throughout his life, Dubuffet challenged the canon and the rules of art, inviting the viewer to rethink beauty and to celebrate even the worlds most trivial things.

Motion Autos Art Architecture

Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture celebrates the artistic dimension of the automobile and links it to the parallel worlds of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography and film. In this holistic approach, the exhibition challenges the separate silos of these disciplines and explores how they are visually and culturally linked together.

The exhibition considers the affinities between technology and art, showing for example how the use of the wind tunnel helped to aerodynamically shape the automobile to go faster with more economic use of power. This streamlining revolution was echoed in works of the Futurist movement and by other artists of the period. It was also reflected in the industrial design of everything, from household appliances to locomotives.

The exhibition brings together nearly forty automobileseach the best of its kind in such terms as beauty, rarity, technical progress and a vision of the future. These are placed centre stage in the galleries and surrounded by significant works of art and architecture. Many of these have never before left their homes in private collections and public institutions, so they are being opened up to a wider audience for the first time. Unlike any other single invention, the automobile has completely transformed the urban and rural landscape of our planet and in turn our lifestyle. We are on the edge of a new revolution of electric power, so this exhibition could be seen as a requiem for the last days of combustion.

How To Visit The Guggenheim

Because the museum is quite compact, you can easily combine visiting this museum with other activities in the area. You can either go cycling in Central Park or visit one of the other museums close by on Fifth Avenue. The closest ones are the Neue Gallery or The Cooper Hewitt both of which are housed in former New York mansions.

The museum has a restaurant on the ground floor called The Wright. The restaurant is named after Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect of this unique building. You can eat well here but its quite small.

Also, pay a visit to the Guggenheim museum shop on the first floor before you leave. It offers a big variety of prints, postcards and everything else you need if you are an art aficionado. The Guggenheim Store was even awarded the title of Best Museum Store! There is usually also the lego version of the Guggenheim for sale if you want to take the whole building home.

History Of The Guggenheim

The museum was established in 1939 and was originally called the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. It was founded by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by by the aforenamed New York mining magnate. He started collecting abstract art in later life with the help of his long-time art advisor, artist and museum director, Hilla von Rebay, and he bequeathed the initial collection.

In 1943, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to design a building to house the museum, which adopted its current name in 1952 after the death of its founder. Guggenheims passing in 1949 contributed to the delay in completing the building, along with many modifications to the design, the acquisition of additional property and the rising costs of building materials following World War II.

Construction began in 1956 and the museum opened to the public on October 21, 1959, six months after Wrights death. The inverted ziggurat structure was derided by some critics but hailed by others, who welcomed it as a beloved architectural icon. The museum closed for three years in 1990 for renovations, including the addition of an eight-story tower. The Guggenheim reopened in 1992 with the entire original Wright building now devoted to exhibition space and the tower containing 4750 square meters of new and renovated gallery spaces.

Vip Tour At Guggenheim

If you want to know more about the art of the Guggenheim Museum, take a private guided tour! With this 2 hour-long tour, you experience the highlights of Guggenheim and can ask the art expert everything you want to know. That way, you dont have to worry about missing an important piece. And you might finally find out what Kandinsky wanted to tell his audience. Another plus is that you get the skip the line access with this tour. The maximum number of participants is 10 people. So the guide is able to answer every question and you wont have to worry about walking around in a big group of people.

What To Do At The Guggenheim

The museums ascending ramp is occupied by rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Though Wright intended visitors to go to the top and wind their way down, the striking single semi-circular elevator can make this difficult on busy days. Exhibitions, therefore, are installed from bottom to top.

Pick up the free audioguide or download the Guggenheim app for information about the exhibits and architecture. You an discover works in the Thannhauser Collection with the child-friendly audio descriptions, available on the Guggenheims Digital Guide. You can also enhance your experience of the building with a Family Activity Guide on architecture.

There are two good on-site food options: the Wright, at ground level, a space-age restaurant serving steamy risotto and classic cocktails, and Café 3 on the 3rd floor, which offers views of Central Park, coffee and light snacks. Both venues are components of the original building design and worth a look in their own right for their splendid aesthetics.

Vasily Kandinsky: Around the Circle

Until 5 September 2022 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan

The most comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the Russian painter Vasily Kandinsky to date includes more than 80 works presented in chronological order in the Guggenheims rotundaeither going forward in time or backwards, depending on how you prefer to walk along the museums spiral. Some of the final paintings Kandinsky made in France start at the bottom of the ramp, ascending to his earliest works made in Munich. Sections of the show explore different chapters of the artists life, from his teaching at the Bauhaus in the early 1920s to his various relocations across Europe amid political turmoil. There is a strong focus on the artists spiritual and philosophical interests, anchored by his 1911 text Concerning the Spiritual in Art, in which Kandinsky deliberates his argument for Abstract art, urging artists to renounce the object altogether and create work that causes a vibration in the human soul.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, often referred to as The Guggenheim, is an art museum located at 1071 Fifth Avenue on the corner of East 89th Street in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is the permanent home of a continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, Hilla von Rebay. It adopted its current name in 1952, three years after the death of its founder Solomon R. Guggenheim.

In 1959, the museum moved from rented space to its current building, a landmark work of 20th-century architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The cylindrical building, wider at the top than at the bottom, was conceived as a “temple of the spirit”. Its unique ramp gallery extends up from ground level in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building to end just under the ceiling skylight. The building underwent extensive expansion and renovations in 1992 when an adjoining tower was built, and from 2005 to 2008.
