The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome

Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I’ve got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.

Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers.

I have found that often when people can get tickets to special things at the Vatican, like St Peters tomb , the Papal Audience, or the Vatican Gardens, they often want to also visit the Vatican Museums on the same day.

Here’s my advice for visiting the Vatican when you want to see more than just the Vatican Museums:

What Is The Most Famous Scene In The Sistine Chapel

Two of the most important scenes on the ceiling are his frescoes of the Creation of Adam and the Fall of Adam and Eve/Expulsion from the Garden. In order to frame the central Old Testament scenes, Michelangelo painted a fictive architectural molding and supporting statues down the length of the chapel.

Did Michelangelo Paint The Entire Sistine Chapel

The most important artworks in the chapel are the frescoes by Michelangelo on the ceiling and on the west wall behind the altar. The frescoes on the ceiling, collectively known as the Sistine Ceiling, were commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508 and were painted by Michelangelo in the years from 1508 to 1512.

Angels Unaware The Migration Monument

Best Sistine Chapel Tickets to Skip the Line (Vatican Museums)

On the left-hand side of Piazza San Pietro stands a particular, interesting monument likely to catch your attention due to its distinctive traits, much different from anything else in this monumental complex.

This is a meaningful, beautiful monument to remind the tragedy of migrations and has been inaugurated by the Pope, who wanted to remember all those who have suffered and still suffer due to forced displacement.

There is no plaque on the monument, nor explanation, however, it is powerful and worth seeing.

The plan was to have in the square for a while and then move to the gardens however, it is still on the square for all to see at the time of writing .

How To Visit The Sistine Chapel With No Line

The Sistine Chapel is located inside the Vatican Museums. So in order to visit it you need to buy a ticket to the Vatican Museums. As we said, given the large turnout that the museum has, it is recommended to book a skip-the-line ticket for the entrance.Reserve your tickets for Vatican Museum

In order to avoid the lines there are many solutions. The first option is to pre-purchase the skip-the-line entrance ticket that allows you to enter the Vatican Museums on the day and time you have chosen. By purchasing the simple entrance ticket, you also have the option of the official audio guide. This latter option permits you to orient better inside the museums and listen to the explanation of the main works on display. The explanation is customizable, so you can freely choose the path you wish most. Our advice is to get organized before entering the Museums having already clear what you want to visit. The Vatican Museums are indeed very large and consist of numerous sections. The paths inside should also be taken into consideration before starting your tour.

The second option is to participate in a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. It is therefore a visit with an official guide who will accompany you for about 3 hours to admire the main sections of the Vatican Museums and of course the Sistine Chapel. The tour takes place only on Saturdays from April and October and during the public holidays and the Christmas holidays.

What Is The Dress Code For Visiting The Vatican Museums

The dress code for visiting the Vatican is relatively strict. Both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees.

This means no tank tops, strapless shirts, miniskirts, or shorts. If youre not sure if your outfit meets the dress code requirements, its always better to err on the side of caution and dress more conservatively.

If youre visiting St Peters Basilica after the museums, dress more conservatively because there is a stricter dress code here. You will be asked to remove your hat.

TIP: If youre visiting in the summer months, the museums can be quite hot and stuffy. Be sure to wear light and comfortable clothing.

Different Path To Visit The Sistine Chapel

As we said, to visit the Sistine Chapel it is necessary to enter the Vatican Museums.Inside the Vatican Museums it is possible to choose between the two paths well signalled along the itinerary.

Therefore if you intend to visit mainly the Sistine Chapel there is a short path that avoids many of the halls of the Vatican Museums. This route starts immediately once you go up the main escalators after the Atrio dei Quattro Cancelli and leads you directly towards the Sistine Chapel walking through the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Geographical Maps and the Pius V Apartment.

Consider that with this path you wont see many important halls of the museums as the Pio Clementino Museum, which hosts the important statue of the Laocoonte, the Cortile del Belvedere and the Raphaels Rooms. On the other side, with the longer path you will also see the Greek-roman section and some of the courtyard of the Vatican Museums. Signals are present almost everywhere.

How To Get To The Vatican Museums

The entrance to the Vatican Museums is on Viale Vaticano.

If you plan to take a taxi, just tell the driver “Vatican Museums”.

So, exactly what is the Vatican? Find out here!

Visiting the Vatican Museums and arriving by Metro

Otherwise, the most common way to get there is by Metro.

Rome’s metro red line A has two stops, equidistant from the entrance to the museums : Ottaviano and Cipro.

The Ottaviano metro stop is the first one you will come to if you are coming from Rome’s center.

When you emerge from the metro station, you just need to follow the crowd towards the Vatican, and once you see Michelangelo’s walls, follow them to the right and you will come to the entrance of the Vatican Museums.

If you are visiting the Vatican museums from the opposite direction, or if you forget to get off at Ottaviano, or, better yet, if you want to get off at the next stop to get some fabulous pizza by the slice from Bonci’s Pizzarium, then you will get off at Cipro stop.

From this stop, you cannot see the same stream of people, nor can you immediately see the Vatican walls.

You will need to walk just a little bit until you see the walls.

Follow them until you come to the entrance.

Visiting the Vatican Museums and Arriving by Bus

Another option for arriving at the entrance of the Vatican museums is to take a bus or buses.

Many buses will get you pretty close to the entrance of the Vatican museums. These include the 492, 49, 23, and the 81.

Vatican Necropolis And St Peters Tomb

Below the current basilica lies the old Vatican necropolis, where St Peter is buried.

Special visits to the necropolis underneath the Basilica and St. Peters tomb are only possible following special rules.

Access is possible in small groups only, they need to be led by a Vatican travel guide and they have a maximum number of visitors allowed each day , to preserve the integrity of such a delicate environment.

The access to St Peters tomb and Vatican necropolis is separate from that to the museums and must be planned separately. You can find all the info here

Considering the limited access to the tomb area, tickets are exceptionally hard to get and sending a request well in advance is mandatory.

Is Photography Allowed In The Vatican Museums

Yes, but only without a flash. You can take photos and videos throughout the museums and in the Vatican Gardens.

Remember that the Vatican Museums attract millions of tourists each year, so keep your camera or phone stowed away when visiting some parts of the museums. Be mindful to avoid disrupting other visitors.

Finally, note that selfie sticks are not allowed in the museums or St Peters Basilica.

Visit During Early Hours

Vatican City Guide (with Map)

The best time to visit the Vatican is either early morning when the gates open or late afternoon. Mid-morning to early afternoon is usually the busiest period as the Vatican is thronged by tourists. Waves of people get down off their tourist buses where the queue ends, adding to its length and waiting time. Once the early wave of tourists lessens, the queue shortens down but is still pretty formidable. If you have purchased your tickets online, then this wont affect you anyway and you should be able to enter the Vatican Museums comfortably.

Do I Need A Passport To Visit Vatican

The Vatican City is an independently recognized state thanks to the Lateran Pacts that were signed by Benito Mussolini in February 1929. However, despite being a sovereign state, it has no former border controls. It does not have its own airport or sea borders, and so the only way to enter the Vatican is through Italy. If you can enter Italy, then you can enter Vatican City. You can simply walk into St Peters Square to enter the Vatican.

Is Entry To Vatican City Free

It is the basilica at the heart of the Roman Catholic Church and free to enter. However, without a skip-the-line ticket, you could be waiting up to 2 hours during the busy season. Watch Out For Pickpockets

Rome’s Vatican & Sistine Chapel Tour: How to Avoid the Crowds

, and how to avoid being pickpocketed.

If you were a pickpocket, wouldn’t you choose the easiest targets?

The people not paying any attention to their surroundings, and to their own belongings? And can you imagine what easy pickings they have in very crowded places, like the Sistine Chapel, when everyone is jostling each other, and just concentrating on looking UP?

Sadly, I know of many instances where people have been pickpocketed without realizing it at all, until they get back to their hotel room.

Your belongings should be secured on your body or in a locked purse or backpack that you can keep control of.

I don’t want to scare you, but I want you to avoid being a pickpocket victim. It puts a huge damper on the whole experience. So be vigilant.

How Long Does It Take To Visit The Necropolis And Crypts Of The Vatican

The visit to the Necropolis must always be accompanied by an official Vatican guide and always lasts 90 minutes. It is the perfect time to discover the galleries and understand the history and rituals of the burials of the Popes.

The site is quite narrow and is considered a very delicate sacred place whose preservation is fundamental for the Vatican officials, so you will not have the opportunity to walk around the area at your leisure and you will not have free time during this visit to the Vatican Necropolis and Crypts.

How To Take A Taxi To The Vatican

Depends from the leaving point

A taxi ride should cost no more than 20 euros if youre staying in the historic center of Rome.

When you get in, tell the driver to take you to the Vatican Museums entrance, otherwise, theyll take you to St. Peters Basilica.

The most typical way to get a taxi in Rome is to go to a taxi stand. These are located near every major tourist attraction.

If you arent located near one, you can always order a coffee and pastry at a café and ask the people working there to call you one.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Sistine Chapel

Visiting the Sistine Chapel. History, architecture, decoration ...

Being such a major tourist spot within the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel is always busy, and it can be hard to get a good view of the frescoes with so many people cramming in to get a look!

If you plan well ahead you may be able to hit a time that will have less crowds: we suggest heading to the Vatican City in the off season are good options and staying away from the summer months, Easter and Christmas.

Another secret tip although Wednesdays see the Vatican City stuffed with people coming to see an audience with the pope, you could use this time to rush through the museums to the Sistine Chapel first thing on a Wednesday morning whilst everyone else queue for a glimpse of the pontiff.

How To Get To Saint Peter’s Basilica And Square

The entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica is on Saint Peter’s Square.

This is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Vatican Museums, so if you are not visiting the Vatican Museums , and want to go directly to the basilica, you can still take the metro, but make sure to get off at Ottaviano, not Cipro.

From Ottaviano metro stop, St. Peter’s Square is about a 15 minute walk.

Follow the crowds, but at the walls, do not make a right towards the museums, just keep going straight.

The buses that arrive closest to St. Peter’s Square include the 40 and the 64.

The 64 bus is probably the one that takes you the closest to Saint Peter’s Square.
