The Lacma Lights Art Installation Urban Lights Is A Must

Does that picture look familiar to you?

Almost everyone in Los Angeles has either taken a picture with the famous LACMA Lights or has seen their friends on Facebook or Instagram with them–and why not?

The lights, which is actually an art piece by Chris Burden called Urban Light, is a totally free installation to walk amongst and take pictures with. It’s been around for a while and has already vaulted itself as a Los Angeles icon.

Oh, and dont miss the humongous boulder you can walk underneath!

Dont worry, it hasnt fallen yet.

What Are Some Of The Craziest Things Visitors Have Done At Urban Light

People do séances there, says Mark Gilberg, formerly director of the museums conservation center. They light fires and do crystal worshipping there. Just go over there at midnight. People wanna climb it.

Gilberg has even seen people strip naked and take selfies. Like, why? he asks.

Though its not rented as an official wedding site, many couples have exchanged vows in front of Urban Light and captured the moment in photos.

As part of the artworks anniversary, LACMA commissioned Siri Kaur to shoot portraits of people who marked personal milestones at the installation and shared their photos on social media. Kaurs portraits, which provide a where-are-they-now update, are on view in the Art Catalogues Bookstore of the museums Ahmanson Building.

Teamlab Is Suing A Los Angeles Museum For Allegedly Copying Its Instagram

Immersive art is big business. Now, it has the legal bills to prove it.

Eileen Kinsella, April 27, 2022

Universe of Water Particles on a Rock where People Gather

When teamLabthe Japanese art collective known for creating 360-degree interactive software environmentsopened a museum in Tokyo in 2018, it drew more visitors during its first year than the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

But popularity can be a double-edged sword. The success of teamLabs installations and other Instagram-friendly offerings like Yayoi Kusamas Infinity Mirrored Rooms and the Color Factory have inspired droves of imitators.

Now, teamLab claims one museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of Dream Space , has gone too far, violating its copyright and fooling consumers into thinking it is associated with the Japanese collective.

For the past two years, teamLab has been waging a quiet legal battle against the museum, founded by the U.S. subsidiary of a Beijing tech company called Dahooo that also produces light shows, 3D maps, and installations for shopping malls.

Attorneys for teamLab and MODS declined to comment on the proceedings. But in court documents, the Los Angeles company claims that teamLab has failed to make a convincing case that its interactive digital installations can be copyrighted at all.

In the coming months, decisions are likely to set key precedents in the realm of intellectual property lawand the big business of immersive art.

Doug and I arrived at the LACMA exhibit around 8am on a Sunday morning, and there was only one other couple there taking engagement photos. It was the perfect setting, and the lighting was stunning! I didnt have to photoshop any people out of my photos, and that is a blessing.

Are All The Lights The Same

There are 16 different lamppost designs in the installation. The globes atop each lamppost vary in shape and size round, acorn and cone. The acorn-shaped globes are not made anymore, so LACMA scours the city and stockpiles them in case one needs to be replaced.

The lights come from neighborhoods mostly in Southern California. In 2008, in a public conversation with Burden, LACMA Director Michael Govan talked about how the lampposts were distinctively of Los Angeles:

I remember being incredibly amazed by them and knowing that they had to be in Los Angeles, he said. Because, in so many ways, they were the representation of the whole county, with each city responsible for designing its own lamps. Each lamp, then, was an expression of that citys design they were public art. And of course theyve now created this image through their density.

Largest Art Museum On The West Coast

LACMA is the largest art museum in the Western United States in terms of largest exhibition space at least it was until April 2020 when four of the buildings were demolished to make way for new buildings slated to be finished in 2024. Even with construction underway, much of the collection is still on display for you to enjoy. The museum always has rotating exhibits that are worth checking out, too.
