Spreckels Organ And Gunn Theater

In 1924, John D. Spreckels commissioned the Ernest M. Skinner Company of Boston to build the symphonic organ, which is centrally located in the Spreckels Gallery . It was designed to blend into the museum’s structure its 4,500 pipes are not visible to visitors. The ceiling of the gallery is canvas so that the organ can be heard throughout the gallery and museum the canvas ceiling is painted as a trompe-l’il to resemble a marble apse. Organ concerts are performed every Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

The 316-seat James A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Theater, located downstairs off the Hall of Antiquities, is a venue for chamber music concerts by the San Francisco Symphony and for lectures and other programs. Legion Of Honor In Lincoln Park

Built to commemorate Californian soldiers who died in World War I, the Legion of Honor the gift of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels to the city of San Franciscois a beautiful Beaux-Arts building located high on the headlands in San Francisco’s Lincoln Park. The Legion is most noted for its breathtaking setting, offering overlooks of the Pacific Ocean where it spills into San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and a unique vantage point of the city of San Francisco.

In 1915 Alma Spreckels fell in love with the French Pavilion at San Franciscos Panama-Pacific International Exposition. This pavilion was a replica of the Palais de la Légion dHonneur in Paris, one of the distinguished 18th-century landmarks on the left bank of the Seine. Alma Spreckels persuaded her husband, sugar magnate Adolph B. Spreckels, to recapture the beauty of the pavilion as a new art museum for San Francisco. Constructed on a remote site known as Lands Endone of the most beautiful settings imaginable for any museumthe California Palace of the Legion of Honor was completed in 1924 and on Armistice Day of that year the doors opened to the public.

Legion Of Honor Museum To Reopen In May With Two New Exhibits

The Legion of Honor museum will reopen in early May, with two new highly anticipated exhibitions, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco announced Thursday, April 8.

The Legion is scheduled to reopen May 5 to members and May 7 to the general public, observing 25% capacity restrictions as well as social-distancing and sanitation recommendations.

Purchasing tickets in advance for the museum is still recommended. Tickets go on sale online Wednesday, April 14.

With things changing on an almost daily basis at the moment, were all very excited that the end of this long period of constraint seems to be in sight, said Thomas P. Campbell, the director and CEO of FAMSF. That said, were still taking quite a cautious approach for the safety of our staff and visitors.

The museum was last open to the public from Oct. 30 to Nov. 29 last year, before it closed due to the rollback of COVID-19 restrictions. The de Young Museum, also part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, has been open since March 6.

The Legion of Honor plans to reopen with the exhibitions: Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave and Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening? Both shows are exclusive to the museum in the United States.

The exhibition, originally slated to open in March 2020, was delayed a year by the pandemic.

The Kenyan American artists work is being presented in the buildings courtyard and the museums Rodin Galleries.

All visitors are encouraged to book ticket reservations online in advance for general admission and special exhibitions. Tickets may also be purchased at the admissions desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Legion of Honor museum store and the Legion of Honor café are open to the public and do not require a ticket for entry. Legion of Honor organ concerts are free to the public and will return at 4:30 pm every Saturday beginning Saturday November 13, 2021.
