Catch Flights Not Feelings At The Lone Star Flight Museum

I fly a lot, and in the past year have accumulated enough flight miles to circumvent the globe many times over. But never have I ever been on a plane experience as cool as what the Lone Star Flight Museum is offering to visitors. This week I had a once-in-a-lifetime experience to not only get a sneak peak of the newLone Star Flight Museum, but also fly around in one of the antique planes that the museum maintains.

The bird of choice for my trip was the 1944 North American B-52 Mitchell of the Doolittle Raiders crew who bombed Tokyo during WWII. I know, WHAT. The experience started at the former Lone Star Flight Museum that opened in Galveston in 1991. As part of the safety talk, we were instructed to not touch anything red, dusty, or rusty. We were also encouraged to chug a bottle of water because we were about to climb into a hot metal plane that had been baking in the Texas summer sun all afternoon. Kewl.

To kick off the adventure, I climbed up the ladder and hopped on up to the seat behind the cockpit. With my feet were dangling about 2 feet above the floor, I had a good view of the propellers during take offwhich let me tell you was a bit scary. Of course I knew we were safe, but the first initial jumps in the air with the engine popping sure does get ones heart racing. I was doing everything within my control not to grab the poor camera guys arm sitting next to me.

Wow!

I had been to the Lone Star Flight Museum when it was in Galveston… and it was pretty good. The staff invited me out to the new location at Ellington Airport, I was a little hesitant to make the drive.

Well, we went anyway… and you need to see the hands on kids activities!

There is an interactive STEM kids room with a lot of things to learn… and it’s just as good as the Houston Museum of Natural Science or Children’s Museum of Houston . For kids over ten, there is also a room for flight simulations. And there are hangers full of planes !

When we arrived, we toured the hangers and even saw an old aircraft take off. Also, a docent was giving an informal tour and we learned a whole about the planes.

We then found the STEM room where the kids tried out hang gliders, did all sorts of experiments and watched a movie in the theater.

The Lone Star Flight Museum is not too far from downtown Houston and is worth the drive. Admission is pretty expensive, so I would consider a membership and going back a few times this year.

The Lone Star Flight Museum March 96 Aviation History Feature

All forms of aviation continue to be a global obsessiona unique language that most people appreciate and to which they somehow relate. An airplane is also a unique classroom. Those of us who have the opportunity are obligated to use it to help interpret our past so that we may understand our future a little better. Vintage aircraft should also be considered time capsules that must be preserved to educate future generations in mans greatest dreams and achievements.

Back in 1985, several vintage aircraft enthusiasts bought and restored to flying condition a U.S. Marine Corps Chance-Vought FG-1D Corsair. Building on success, they then restored a North American AT-6/SNJ Texan. Additional restoration projects followed, including a North American T-28 Trojan and a Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber.

The aircraft were flown to airshows throughout the country, acting as ambassadors of our nations aviation heritage. It soon became clear that these magnificently restored examples of our aviation past deserved a permanent home where educational programs and exhibits could be developed. The restoration of these aircraft and their subsequent display formed the foundation for what was to become the Lone Star Flight Museum.
