Tamales With Mole Chicken
Makes 8 to 10 servings
For the masa:
Salt, to taste
1 pound vegetable shortening
40 to 50 dried corn husks, soaked in cold water for 10 minutes and drained well
For the filling:
4 chicken thighs, poached in broth and shredded **
Mole poblano, to coat shredded chicken
Make the masa:
1. In a bowl, combine masa harina with the broth and salt to taste. Beat well for 10 minutes.
2. In a separate bowl, beat the shortening. Combine with masa harina and beat together for 2 minutes.
Make the tamales:
1. Place a heaping tablespoon of the masa on each corn husk. Top the masa with a bit of the shredded chicken-mole mix.
2. Fold the long edges toward the center to enclose the filling. Fold the ends of the husk to wrap the tamal and give it shape. If youd like, tie the tamales with a strip of corn husk.
3. Place a bed of corn husks on the bottom of a large steamer and pour in 4 cups of water. Stand the tamales upright around the edge. Cover and cook for 1 hour, until the tamales are cooked through and the filling pulls away easily from the husks.
* If making vegetarian or vegan tamales, use vegetable broth
** If making vegetarian or vegan tamales, you can use a mix of chopped, lightly cooked vegetables of your choosing

La Casa Azul And How She Lived
The museum is La Casa Azul, where Frida was born, grew up, and lived the last 13 years of her life.
The museum takes you through room after room. The first two rooms you go through are galleries of her art with a few unfinished pieces. The next rooms are art she collected and photographs taken of her by her photographer father and photographer friends. Throughout the museum youll see art she collected or was gifted by artist friends and admirers.
After visiting the museum, I realized that much of the museums focus was about how she lived. Her life was considered art and we have come to hold every piece of her life as an inspiration. Can you imagine your life being immortalized by the books on your shelf, the trinkets on your dresser, and the art on your walls?
One of my favorite parts of the museum was the kitchen. This colorful room seemed like a place Id want to cook with my family and host friends at the table.
It was strange walking around the house, imagining what Frida Kahlos life was like and analyzing her every possession. Much of it was left as it was when she died . Her studio had a mirror used for her self-portraits.
Her ashes are held in the brown toad-shaped urn in her bedroom. No big deal. Read all the description signs carefully and youll find interesting details.

Finding Mexico In Boynton Beach
In her Boynton Beach catering kitchen, chef Aurora García Ramos understands that kind of yearning and the treasure hunts it can unleash. She knows the simplest foods can pull us back to our roots.
I wanted to make good, really good, tortillas. That was the first thing I wanted to make, she says of the gateway cooking project that led her to establish her catering business, Aurora’s Mexican Kitchen.
After more than a decade of living in south county and working as a private Spanish teacher, García Ramos returned to her native town of Tehuitzingo in Puebla state for a few years so her daughter could complete her studies there. It was when she returned to Palm Beach County in 2017 that the yearning for authentic Mexican food stuck particularly hard.
In Tehuitzingo, she had spent time with her grandmother and cooking icon, Amparo Martínez, before she died. García Ramos was able to reconnect with the childhood lessons she learned in her grandmothers kitchen: how to grind alkalized corn on a metate mealing stone, how to muddle spices in a molcajete, how to create the most complex of moles and how to incorporate them into the simplest of tamales without overpowering the masas delicate earthiness.
She used her late grandmothers old granite metate to grind the corn into a masa that she would shape into thickish discs and cook on a flat comal pan over flames to produce pliable and utterly delicious tortillas.

How Much Does It Cost To Go To The Frida Kahlo Museum
During opening hours, the store is open from 10 a.m. The meeting will be held until 5:45 p.m. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday . On Mondays, the store is closed. A general admission ticket costs 246 pesos . International visitors are free, under 6 years old are free. Photographs inside the museum require a permit, which is separate from the entrance fee.

History
Frida Kahlo was a 20th-century Mexican painter known for her self-portraits. Her unique style was inspired by folk art, pop culture, and social issues. Frida dealt with numerous health issues during her life. She contracted polio at a young age, which made her right leg shorter than her left. As a teenager, Frida was involved in a severe bus accident. She experienced pain and complications from this accident for the rest of her life.
In 1928, Frida met the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and the two were married in 1929. Fridas work was featured in numerous exhibitions during her life, but she was generally unknown until after her death. Her work was rediscovered in the 1970s and by the 1990s, she had become a prominent social and political icon.
Casa Azul, or the Blue House, is the building where the Frida Kahlo Museum is located. Frida was born in this house in 1907 and spent her childhood here. She later moved back to the Blue House to live here with her husband Diego Rivera. In 1954, Frida Kahlo died in Casa Azul. In 1958, Diego Rivera donated the house and its contents as the Frida Kahlo Museum.

The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection of Mexican Art managed by the Vergel Foundation is a prestigious collection that will be exhibited for the very first time in Amstelveen. This collection, together with the Dolores Olmedo Collection, is the most important collection of the work of the renowned artist Frida Kahlo. In the autumn of 2021, the Olmedo Collection will be on show in the Drents Museum.
With this exhibition, the Cobra Museum addresses pressing themes such as political and social engagement, free expression, emancipation and gender. Frida Kahlo Museum Travel Tips
- Last admission is at 5:30pm.
- There is a cafe and a rather expensive gift shop.
- You are not allowed to carry Backpacks, packages and umbrella , food, candy, gum and any liquids Strollers, baby carrier, fanny packs and bulky objects hat, sunglasses and Mobile Sharps or firearms.
- No flash photography. Permssion from the box office is required for any photography and videos are not permitted.
Lets Tour Frida Kahlos Casa Azul
A long line snakes around the interior garden and walls of the home before you enter the actual home at Casa Azul which fortunately moves at a good pace. While I was waiting, I struck up a conversation with someone who visits Mexico City regularly and she mentions that I should also visit the nearby museum dedicated to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo called Museo Anahuacalli which I will detail further down in the post. In spite of the rather long line, I take the time to enjoy the lush gardens and sculpture and notice the lovely architectural details of the exterior façade of the home.
Tip once you enter the gates, head directly to the main line to get into the house.

Near The Frida Kahlo Museum
The museum is in the Coyoacán neighborhood, south of downtown and about a 15-20 minute drive. A few blocks away is the Coyoacán market where youll find souvenirs and food stalls. Nearby the market youll find the main square with the Coyoacán Cathedral and a line of bustling restaurants. Its a nice neighborhood to walk around in.
After Frida Kahlo Museum Go To Xochimilco And/or Anahuacalli
After visiting Casa Azul, take a short walk to the center of Coyoacan and get lunch. There are a number of restaurants a few blocks away from the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyocan by Parque Centenario . Ive eaten at both La Cerveceria de Barrio and Antiguo Palacio De Coyoacan and they were both tasty.
If you have more adventure in you, grab your food to go, head down to Xochimilco and have a party on the canals.
Kahlo museum ticket gets you into Museo Diego Rivera – Anahuacalli. You can use your Anahuacalli ticket for one year after the purchase of a Museo Kahlo ticket.
Visiting both Xochimilco and Anahuacalli after going to Casa Azul is a great idea because of how far south from Mexico City you have to go to get to them. It makes the most sense to get these three knocked out in one day if you can.

Museo Frida Kahlo Tickets Lines And Audio Guides
The museum opened at 10 a.m. on a Sunday and we arrived at 9:45 a.m. to get into an already growing line. There were two lines. On the left is the line for people with tickets and the right is the line for people without tickets. We had bought our 10:30 a.m. entrance tickets online in advance, which is highly recommended unless you want to wait in the ticket-less line for at least two hours. The ticket-less line works as standby, letting people through based on how many who have already bought tickets show up. We saw plenty of people show up, figure out they were out of luck, and leave.
Tickets are $235.40 pesos and you can purchase one for a specific day and time two months in advance. I couldnt get a credit card to work on their website but a debit card worked fine. Be sure to bring a print out of your ticket.
If you want to take photos with any type of camera inside, youll pay $30 pesos at the entrance and theyll give you a special sticker.
They also have audio guides for $75 pesos available at the entrance. They have detailed panels in English and Spanish throughout the museum that gave plenty of information. The audio guide would have provided even more details but I learned a lot at the museum without it.

The Frida Kahlo Museum Architecture
Fridas father, the German photographer Guillermo Kahlo, began to build this house in 1904 . The original architecture of the house echoes the architectural trends of the early twentieth century in Mexico, with a patio surrounded by the buildings that held the rooms. All of the exterior walls are painted in a bright shade of blue, one of Fridas favorite colors. Theres an imitation of a pyramid in the patio, where Diego placed some of the thousands of pre hispanic figures he collected. The upstairs part of the house was designed by architect Juan OGorman in the 1940s, in a very modern way, and using volcanic stone. Its really interesting to see the contrast between these two architectural styles.
I Would Not Buy Tickets In Advance
This place can get very busy. It is often closed even though the website says it is open. One day there was a line of people but the museum was closed for renovations. It is well known so that would be your reason for going. It is away from many places your friends might visit that you might be able to tell them of a place they did not know about.

We went to the museum early as recommended and was glad we did, very busy popular spot. My son and I truly enjoyed our time. We then walked around the open malls, park and even saw a few beautiful churches. Was truly a great day!
This home, now museum, has become very popular. You may have to pre-book for entry. We had tickets but still had a long line to enter. What an amazing place. Casa Azul, was Frida Kahlo’s birthplace and where she grew up. She also lived with her husband Diego Rivera here.The centre garden is very lush and soothing, a nice place to relax & reflext on her wonderful paintings. Most people didn’t seem to realize that one of the rooms on the upper floor, is where she died and that her urn with ashes sits on a table there. I particularly enjoyed seeing her colourful Oaxacan dresses and the braces she needed to wear. The gift shop has worth while items to buy to commemorate your visit. I highly recommend a visit!
