In 1898, the painters Bert Phillips and Ernest L. Blumenschein were crossing New Mexico when, on a remote road, they lost a wagon wheel and walked into a tiny mountain village for help. They never left.

La Hacienda De Los Martinez
The Hacienda de los Martinez is one of the few northern New Mexico style, late Spanish Colonial period, Great Houses remaining in the American Southwest. Built in 1804 by Severino Martin , this fortress-like building with massive adobe walls became an important trade center for the northern boundary of the Spanish Empire. The Hacienda was the final terminus for the Camino Real which connected northern New Mexico to Mexico City. “Beautiful museum and property. It’s the former home of the artist, Nicholai Fechin who lived from 1881-1955. The house itself is a place I would love to call home. It’s well designed and has a terrific feeling inside. The artwork is spectacular – both Fechin’s and the visiting exhibition we saw in the studio when we were there. The gift shop is charming and the restrooms are clean. There is plenty of parking and it’s just located off the Main Street – just before you hit the Wynn hotel. A museum well worth visiting.
