The World Trade Center Cross

Just days after the towers’ collapse, recovery workers discovered a 17 ft tall intersecting beam among the wreckage that unmistakenly resembled a Christian cross.

This cross was installed here on the side of St. Peter’s Church as a temporary holding spot before being transferred to the National September 11th Museum.

This transfer was not without controversy, as a national Atheists Association opposed the use of government funds to accommodate the transfer, but they lost.

The court ruled that the cross did not violate constitutional restrictions on church and state.

The current cross was installed in 2011 and was designed by Jon Krawczyk. Its polish is intended to reflect the sky, crowds, and the emerging World Trade Center.

The new cross is filled with notes, letters, and other symbols of loss.

    The Waterfalls And Reflecting Pools

President Obama, first lady tour Sept. 11 museum

These 2 enormous pools with cascading waterfalls, designed by architect Michael Arad, and titled “Reflecting Absence”.

They are set into the exact footprints of the original North and South World Trade Center Towers, which were destroyed on September 11, 2001.

At 1 acre in surface area and 32 feet deep, these are the largest man-made waterfalls in North America.

The pools are one of the most moving memorials in the world. These pools represent the void left in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, both with the loss of life as well as in the soul of the city and the country.

It is nearly impossible to view the pools without experiencing some sort of emotions. We recommend visiting at twilight or night to see the pools illuminated.

The Memorial honors those who died on 9/11, including those who perished at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the victims of hijacked Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.

Also included are the oft-forgotten six victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

The victims’ names are inscribed around the bronze edges of the pools. Instead of being arranged alphabetically, the names are organized by meaningful adjacencies.”

Names are grouped together based on their relationships with other victims, such as co-workers, family members, friends, and even those who commuted together.

As with the voids represented by the pools and waterfalls, so are the names indented.

Visiting The 9/11 Museum With Children

If youre wondering if the 9/11 Museum is appropriate for kids, well thats a totally legit question. The museum recommends the historical part of the exhibition only to children over 10 years old, for the emotional impact that the exhibition can have. I mean, its heavy.

When I visited, there were a few older children . I personally feel like children over 10 can learn a lot from visiting the museum, and youll be fine bringing them, but itd be better if you talked to them about the events of 9/11 before visiting the museum, so it wont be shocking for them. Here youll find some tips from the museum on how to talk to kids about terrorism and 9/11.

If you download the Explore 9/11 app, youll find on there a specific childrens tour, where the events are narrated from another child in very simple and appropriate terms.

The museum also features some activity stations for children, where kids can play and learn from the educators at the same time. Activity stations are offered every Saturday during the school year. They take place in the Museum Education Center from 10 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 to 4 PM.

You can also book a 2-hour, kid-friendly workshop where kids will go through the exhibitions and learn in an interactive and non-shocking way about the events of 9/11. This activity is affordable and loved by kids, so a very good choice if youre visiting the museum with children.

Way N : Buy Your Tickets On The Official Website

This is the official website of 9/11 Museum and Memorial.

All 9/11 Museum tickets have a timed entry, save for those purchased for the same day, in which case you may be prompted to visit later in the day when there are less visitors.

You can get tickets on the day of your visit at the ticket counter. I dont recommend doing that, however. There may be a line to get tickets, and once you do, you may discover that they are not even for the next time slot.

Get your tickets in advance, as they have the advantage of being skip-the-line and you can select your preferred time slot.

Tickets sold on the official website cost $28 USD for adults . Reduced tickets for senior, college students and visitors up to 17 years old are $22 . Children up to the age of 12 pay $15 and US veterans pay $18.

Once you get to the site, select how many tickets you need and whether they are for adults or reduced fares and pick a time slot for your visit.
