As many of you are aware, since the retirement of Mr. Batkin in April of 2020, Jean Higgins has served brilliantly as Director of the Museum while a formal search for a new director was conducted. We are extremely grateful to Jean for her leadership and commitment to the Museum. Since her appointment, Jeans immense knowledge and talents have allowed the Museum to achieve remarkable accomplishments during the pandemic and its constantly changing repercussions.

Museum Of Contemporary Native Arts

Set on Museum Hill, the Museum of International Folk Art is a menagerie of global folk art with some 130,000 items in its permanent collection. “Multiple Visions: A Common Bond,” which is on long-term view,features more than 10,000 pieces by itself. Plus, it mounts traveling exhibitions that have spotlighted everything from the kites of Japan to the Hispano folk music of northern New Mexico. The museum is connected to citys International Folk Art Market, a festival that takes over Museum Hill for three days in July with wares from more than 100 artists from around the world.

To celebrate the closing of Collecting Jewelry: H. P. Meras Trip to Navajo Country in 1932, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture are pleased to host three contemporary Navajo/Diné jewelers in conversation with exhibition curator Ross Altshuler and MIAC assistant curator, Lillia McEnaney. Together, these artists will tell their memories of learning how to make jewelry, share stories about their own artistic inspirations and innovations, and reflect on the larger current moment in the Native art world.

Iaia Museum Of Contemporary Native Arts

In 1991 the college founded the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum, now the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts , in downtown Santa Fe, with a focus on contemporary intertribal Native American art, the MoCNA is housed in the historic Santa Fe Federal Building , a landmark Pueblo Revival building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum also features the Allan Houser Sculpture Garden.

Meow Wolfs House Of Eternal Return

The House of Eternal Return is the most unorthodox museum youll ever visit. While it’s technically an art installation, the first permanent installation at Meow Wolf, this tourism darling on the citys Southside is much more. Its an interactive art experience that takes visitors on a psychedelic trip through the multiverse. The creation of Santa Fe art-collective-turned-experiential-company Meow Wolf , The House of Eternal Return begins in a Victorian mansion and leads guests through room after room of fantastical environments, from a larger-than-life neon fish tank, to the glowing interior of a mammoth skeleton. Book your tickets ahead for a guaranteed entrance time as the lines get long here, especially during peak tourism seasons.

Tells The Stories Of The People Of The Southwest From Pre

The museum will be closed until May 2021 for installation of new exhibitions.

The museums collections include 80,000 archaeological, ethnographic, and fine arts objects, and more than 10 million artifacts from almost 12,000 carefully excavated archaeological sites across New Mexico. As a part of the Laboratory of Anthropology, the museum interprets the history and contemporary life of the Pueblo, Navajo, Apache, and other indigenous cultures of the Southwest.

The long-term exhibition Here, Now and Always combines Native American voices with artifacts and interactive multimedia to tell the complex stories of the Southwest. The Buchsbaum Gallery displays modern and historic pottery from the regions pueblos. Five changing galleries present exhibitions on subjects ranging from archaeological excavations to contemporary art. In addition, an outdoor sculpture garden offers rotating exhibits of works by Native American sculptors.

New Mexico Museum Of Art

Open in 1917, the New Mexico Museum of Art became the first public building in the state dedicated to art. Its collections include works from early Santa Fe and Taos art groups, including Los Pintores and the Taos Society of Artists, which helped established these towns as art colonies at the start of the 20th century. While youre at the museum, which sits on the edge of Plaza, take note of whats outside, too. The museum was designed in the Pueblo Revival style inspired by the state’s Native American pueblos. The architectural style became a defining design in the Southwest. In 2021, the museum plans to introduce a satellite museum in the Railyard district called Vladem Contemporary to house those collections and mount more contemporary installations and exhibitions.

American modernist painter Georgia OKeeffe is synonymous with New Mexico. The desert landscapes north of Santa Fe, in Abiquiu, inspired her works for decades. Set just off the Plaza, the Georgia OKeeffe Museum is dedicated to the artists works, so youll always find sections of her paintings on display. Youll also see artifacts from her life alongside exhibitions on how she influenced other artists, depending on the season. Up for a road trip? The Martin Building Project

The gallery for this collection is housed inside the newly renovated Martin Building. Standing seven stories tall, the Martin Building is home to collection galleries, a conservation laboratory, interactive classroom space, a family activity center, two restaurants, and the brand new Anna and John J. Sie Welcome Center. It reopened to the public on October 24, 2021.

Founded in 1937, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is New Mexicos oldest non-profit, independent museum. The Wheelwright offers unique exhibitions of contemporary and historic Native American art. Were famous for our focus on little-known genres and for solo shows by living Native American artists. We are the home of the Jim and Lauris Phillips Center for the Study of Southwestern Jewelry, the most comprehensive collection of Navajo and Pueblo jewelry in the world.

Our museum shop, the Case Trading Post, established in 1975, is one of Santa Fes oldest continuously operating galleries of Native American art, featuring the best in contemporary craft and fine arts by Native American artists, as well as a great selection of vintage and antique jewelry, ceramics, and textiles.

Institute Of American Indian Arts

The Institute of American Indian Arts is a publictriballand-grant college in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The college focuses on Native American art. It operates the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts , which is housed in the historic Santa Fe Federal Building , a landmark Pueblo Revival building listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Federal Building. The museum houses the National Collection of Contemporary Indian Art, with more than 7,000 items.

Ochethi Sakowin Or Brule Band Artist

This rare example of a beaded “box and border” robe, made and used by women, is extremely unusual. Nearly all others of this style were painted on hide rather than beaded. The design is said to represent the internal organs of the bison.

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, one of four museums in the Museum of New Mexico system, is a premier repository of Native art and material culture and tells the stories of the people of the Southwest from pre-history through contemporary art. The museum serves a diverse, multicultural audience through changing exhibitions, public lectures, field trips, artist residencies, and other educational programs.

More than 65,000 visitors come to the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture each year, of which 30% hail from New Mexico, 50% from other states, and 20% from foreign countries. The small but excellent Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, also on Museum Hill, spotlights the devotional and decorative art, furniture, and textiles of the Spanish colonial era. Youll learn about typical arts of the time period, including retablos and bultos , punched tin work, and colcha . You’ll also learn how New Mexico’s artists are continuing these heritage arts today. Plan ahead for the citys Traditional Spanish Market, held on a weekend in July, when modern-day artists sell traditional arts.
