World War Ii To The Late 20th Century
When World War II started, tonnage levels at the port decreased and shipping activities were suspended however, the war did provide economic benefits for the city. Petrochemical refineries and manufacturing plants were constructed along the ship channel because of the demand for petroleum and synthetic rubber products by the defense industry during the war.Ellington Field, initially built during World War I, was revitalized as an advanced training center for bombardiers and navigators. The Brown Shipbuilding Company was founded in 1942 to build ships for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Due to the boom in defense jobs, thousands of new workers migrated to the city, both blacks, and whites competing for the higher-paying jobs. President Roosevelt had established a policy of nondiscrimination for defense contractors, and blacks gained some opportunities, especially in shipbuilding, although not without resistance from whites and increasing social tensions that erupted into occasional violence. Economic gains of blacks who entered defense industries continued in the postwar years.
The increased production of the expanded shipbuilding industry during World War II spurred Houston’s growth, as did the establishment in 1961 of NASA’s “Manned Spacecraft Center” . This was the stimulus for the development of the city’s aerospace industry. The Astrodome, nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World“, opened in 1965 as the world’s first indoor domed sports stadium.

The glass-enclosed rain forest is home to exotic flowering plants and thousands of live butterflies that flutter around the exhibit. Continue to the Brown Hall of Entomology to view live insects, mounted specimens, and larger-than-life insect models. Houston Museum Of Natural Science To Showcase Egypts Ramses The Great In November

HOUSTON Egypts rich history of masterful rulers will be showcased at the Houston Museum of Natural Science this fall.
The new exhibit, called Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharoahs will make its world premiere Nov. 20 as part of a 10-city global tour and world premiere engagement, the museum said in a news release.
From jewelry to golden treasures of the tomb, visitors can view and admire expert-preserved collection of artifacts and art on display, according to the release.
Visitors can also walk along colossal statues and witness a re-creation of King Ramses triumph during the Battle of Kadesh. A virtual reality experience will also feature Ramses transformation of Egypt.

Early Settlement To The 20th Century
The Allen brothers and John Kirbyexplored town sites on Buffalo Bayou and Galveston Bay. According to historian David McComb, “he brothers, on August 26, 1836, bought from Elizabeth E. Parrott, wife of T.F.L. Parrott and widow of John Austin, the south half of the lower league granted to her by her late husband. They paid $5,000 total, but only $1,000 of this in cash notes made up the remainder.”
The Allen brothers ran their first advertisement for Houston just four days later in the Telegraph and Texas Register, naming the notional town in honor of President Sam Houston. They successfully lobbied the Republic of Texas Congress to designate Houston as the temporary capital, agreeing to provide the new government with a state capitol building. About a dozen persons resided in the town at the beginning of 1837, but that number grew to about 1,500 by the time the Texas Congress convened in Houston for the first time that May. The Republic of Texas granted Houston incorporation on June 5, 1837, as James S. Holman became its first mayor. In the same year, Houston became the county seat of Harrisburg County .
In 1840, the community established a chamber of commerce, in part to promote shipping and navigation at the newly created port on Buffalo Bayou.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science has long been considered a world-class museum, it is one of the largest and most well-attended museums in the United States. Paleontology and dinosaurs, however, were historically good but not greatHouston had a nice collection, but it was not a museum that would be included in many top dinosaur museum lists. That changed in the last ten years, however, when HMNS hired world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Robert Bakker as the Curator of Paleontology, and he led the massive renovation of their dinosaur hall.
HIGHLIGHTS
When it reopened in 2012, the Morian Hall of Paleontology quickly elevated the museum into the top echelon of dinosaur musuems nationwide. Filled with wonderful fossils and terrific paleoart , the HMNS is now one of the best dinosaur museums in the country.
One of the best things about the HMNS renovation is the creative way the fossils are displayedin many cases they are designed to showcase the creatures interacting with others that lived in the same time and place. Some of the displays are truly fantastic and singular: if you want to see the giant pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus NOT in flight, or if you want to see what a Stegosaurus might look like standing on its hind legs, the HMNS is currently the only museum you will be able to do that.

History Of Brazosport Museum Of Natural Science
Mildred Tate dared to dream. Her vision both challenged and inspired her fellow workers. She gave tirelessly to the museum from its inception in 1964 until her death in 1990. With insight, leadership and determination, she created an outstanding collection and display of shells, winning state and national recognition for the museum. She epitomized excellence in field of malacology and instilled her love of shell and nature in a generation of people.
Raymond Walley was a chemist by profession and an archaeologist by avocation. Founder of the Gulf Coast Archaeological Society , he was an enthusiastic leader in the local archaeological endeavors for over twenty years, especially during the 1950s and 1960s.
Initially, the main purpose of the Gulf Coast Archaeological Society was to gain knowledge of the Karankawa Indians who lived in the Brazosport area more than 400 years ago and were still present when the first Anglo colonists arrived. His work in this museum was original and focused the attention of Texas archaeologists on Brazosport for the first time. Later work involved sites in Fort Bend, Wharton and Harris Counties.
A man gifted in inspiring the young, he organized and led two clubs of junior archaeologists, many of whom participated in local explorations, following established professional procedures.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a natural history museum established in 1909 to provide a free institution for the people of Houston focusing on education and science.
The museum complex consists of four floors of natural science halls and exhibits, a Planetarium, a Butterfly Center, and a Giant Screen Theatre. The museum is one of the most popular in the United States.
The museums permanent displays included a dinosaur exhibit, a space museum, and exhibits on geology, biology, petroleum science, technology, and geography.
In 1988, the Challenger Learning Center was opened in memory of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew members that were lost during the shuttles tenth mission.
In 2012, a new wing to house its paleontology hall, more than doubling the size of the original museum. The Paleontology Hall contains more than 60 large skeleton mounts, including three Tyrannosaurus rex and three large Quetzalcoatlus.
