On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wrights winter home, studio and architectural campus in Scottsdale, Ariz., Phoenix Art Museum presents a major exhibition that offers a fresh perspective on the celebrated architects seven-decade career. Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century is the first exhibition to explore Wright and his relevance today through a survey of more than 40 projects, including his vision for the decentralized city, presented through rarely seen drawings, scale models, furniture, films and photographs. The exhibition will be on view December 18, 2011 through April 29, 2012.
Regarded by many as the greatest American architect of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright was a champion of organic architecture. His visionary designs emphasized use of natural materials, harmonious integration of building and landscape and high functionality. Many concepts developed in Wrights revolutionary work are central to todays sustainable, green architecture movement.

On a peculiarly balmy mid-December afternoon, artists Michael Metcalf, Nicole Clark, and Rebecca Burr are gathered on the mulch and gravel-covered grounds of 1320 Bayard Street in Southwest Baltimore. A playful, fleece-clad spotted dog named Finnegan is casually pacing at their feet, and the sun is creeping lower as the trio stands engulfed in a lurid testament to urban artistry.
Behind them sits a graffiti-splattered loveseat, and in front of them, theres an old rusted fireplace, a tricked-out yellow school bus with an awning, and a colorful workstation lined with paint-emblazoned animal statues. Above them, a collection of shiny, hanging fixtures catch the breeze, and sneakers dangle from a wire by their laces.
Although it may not seem like it, The place was really bad when we moved in, recalls Metcalf with a chuckle. I wanted to call it The Oil Can. It was an engine repair space for 25 years, and when it rained, you would just see oil everywhere.
But it was perfect for Creative Labs, a Hampden-based collective led by Meltcalf and a group of fellow Baltimore makers. Known for hosting countless artists studios and pop-up music shows, the venturewhich began seven years agowas in the market for new roots, and saw the hard-to-miss yard as an ideal, local springboard to help broaden its reach.

Where is Immersive Van Gogh in metro Phoenix?
Immersive Van Gogh is at Lighthouse Artspace, 4301 N. Scottsdale Road, in Old Town Scottsdale. Its at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Fifth Avenue.
Lighthouse Artspace did not exist prior to the exhibit it used to be an office space, according to the shows producers but they hope for it to become a permanent exhibition venue, given the renovation work that was required for Immersive Van Gogh.
How much are Immersive Van Gogh tickets?
There are several tiers of tickets that include different perks. Pricing also depends on whether the time you select is peak or off-peak.
Basic tickets cost $39.99-$54.99.
- Peak timed tickets: $54.99.
- Flex tickets: $54.99.
Basic tickets require guests to arrive within the hour of their chosen time. Flex tickets give a four-hour window for entry two hours before or after the designated time.
Premium tickets range from $49.99 for flex tickets during an off-peak time and $64.99 for peak or prime tickets. The price includes a cushion to sit on and a poster.
VIP tickets are $99.99 during peak or prime times . That includes priority access, a cushion to keep, a poster and flexible timing as detailed above.
Tickets for children ages 6-16 start at $29.99 . Admission is free for age 5 and younger. Ticket prices do not include taxes and fees.

The Phoenix Art museum is really quite a treat. The Yayoi Kusama installation was our main reason for visiting and it did not disappoint! We were watchful of the field trip groups and timed our exploring to avoid the larger groups. The docents were very kind and helpful in giving advice and information. We also were enthralled with the Black Cloud butterfly installation. The immense scale of the project is simply incredible. Our visit was on a weekday morning and the museum was pleasantly quiet – giving us time to linger. My children loved the miniatures exhibit, as did I. The level of detail was amazing! We also enjoyed a lunch at the museum cafe which had great vegan and vegetarian options! A wonderful place to visit with your family.

You Who Are Getting Obliterated In The Dancing Swarm Of Fireflies By Yayoi Kusama
Perhaps the single most iconic and popular work in the Museums collection, this installation, colloquially referred to as Fireflies, is an example of one of the acclaimed infinity mirror rooms by the Japanese artist, examples of which exist at museums all over the world. Born in Japan in 1929, Yayoi Kusama drew inspiration for her work from hallucinations she began to experience when she was a child, in which lights and spots invaded her field of vision. In many ways, her infinity mirror rooms duplicate the experience of those visual phenomena. Fireflies, which can only truly be experienced in person, is filled with pinpoints of light that slowly shift colors, creating the illusion of moving through stars in a boundless universe. But how did Kusama do it? In reality, the immersive, seemingly infinite installation is a rectangular, 25-square-foot room with mirrored walls, a Plexiglass ceiling, and a polished black-granite floor. And that endless array of stars or fireflies? Just the reflection of 250 suspended LED lights.

Artist Antonio Berni Exhibit
My son volunteers at the art museum, so I had some time before his shift was done. I decided to wander through the Antonio Berni exhibit. This artist uses a wide variety of mediums, including found items , in his compositions. One of his pieces, “The Grand Temptation or The Grand Illusion” I thought was rather striking. Usually, I have no idea what modern, post-modern or contemporary artists are trying to say with their art – in this case the meaning was obvious. Many of his pieces are unsettling and none are not what I would call “pretty”. However, I appreciate the social commentary his art work makes regarding economic disparities between differing social groups. If you are interested in seeing art work that is thought-provoking, this is a wonderful exhibit.

Full disclosure…I don’t know the first thing about art. I also don’t get modern art. But this museum certainly had something for everyone. In addition to the modern art section , there was what I would call classic or traditional art, contemporary art, a lovely section of Oscar dresses that my daughters enjoyed, and sculptures/pottery/masks mixed in as well. The museum is extremely clean, very open, and setup smartly and we will definitely visit again.

One of the Museums most well-known selfie opportunities, this iconic neon sculpture by Glenn Ligon is often referred to by the pieces phrase: Face Me I Face You. In truth, the title of the piece is Palindrome #1, though writers and grammarians alike will often be the first to say the phrase isnt actually a true palindrome. When it comes to words, we suppose theyre rightexcept Ligon intended to create a conceptual palindrome, not a verbal one. Here he extends beyond the grammatical. His words Face Me I Face You refer to the concept wherein, in any given relationship, the me and you could refer alternatively to either one of two parties in an exchange. This work is a strong example from Ligons body of work, which explores issues surrounding race, language, desire, and identity.

Pueblo Grande Museum And Archeological Park
Pueblo Grande Museum is an archaeological site once inhabited by the Hohokam culture, just east of downtown Phoenix, next to Sky Harbor International Airport. It’s a National Historic Landmark and Phoenix Point of Pride accessible by the Sky Train and the Valley Metro Rail. Part of the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department since 1929, it’s the largest preserved archaeological site in Phoenix. Though the indoor galleries are closed, there is a fully accessible 2/3 mile trail that takes you through a prehistoric Hohokam archaeological site with a platform mound, ball court, and replicated houses. The motorcar racing vehicle display was great, the Ansel Adams exhibit was fabulous,the Western Art extensive and the inter-active “Fireflies” Kasura was a delightful addition. So, even though the museum is in some state of upheaval due to previous poor management in the recent past, it was a very good trip and worthwhile

It has been a few years since I was at the Art Museum and I forgot how good it is. Leaving, my friend asked me what was best. I replied that I was reminded of how broadly the word Art can be defined. We saw the art of shapes and colours defined by the need for speed, by the amazing firefly exhibit, by the art of Pissaro and Ed Mell and of course the photos of Ansel Adams. In short it was a wonderful 2 hours.
We enjoy going to Art Museums, galleries and shows so we took in the Phoenix Art Museum. My husband is a car nut so the Legends of Speed made the visit worthwhile. It gets a score of 10! However, two of the four floors were basically closed for new exhibits to be set up. The modern art section was small and very weird . The LED light exhibit was okay. The American Art section was large & diverse. The Ansel Adams exhibit was okay . When we are disappointed like this I write it off as a donation to the arts.

Is ‘immersive Van Gogh’ Accessible Is There Seating
Are there places to sit at the exhibit?
There are some benches but seating is limited, Ross said. People may choose to sit inside the social distancing circles projected on the floor.
This is a show that you move through, Ross said.
VIP ticket holders receive van Gogh-themed cushions to sit on and can take them home. Premium tickets include a cushion that must be returned at the end of the visit.
How accessible is Lighthouse Artspace?
The Immersive Van Gogh venue is below street level, and guests can enter via escalator or elevator. There is a mezzanine within the exhibit that can be accessed by either stairs or elevator.
According to the website, “Attendants supporting persons with disabilities receive free admission to the exhibition. Persons with disabilities may request an attendant ticket by emailing or by visiting the box office on arrival at the exhibition.”
Service animals are permitted. Wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters are all allowed, and one wheelchair is made available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A number of folding chairs are as well.
“Visitors who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy, as well as others who are sensitive to moving lights” should be aware that the exhibit contains “sequences of bright flashing lights.”

What To See And Do
The museums permanent gallery has nine collecting areas: American art, Western American art, Latin American art, Asian art, European art, modern art, contemporary art, fashion design, and photography. Most visitors start on the second floor with the European collection and continue through the American and Western American collections, but dont miss the impressive Asian collection featuring more than 2,700 works from China, Japan, Korea, Indian, Iran, Nepal, and other countries on the first floor.
The Thorne Rooms are another museum highlight. Located just off the European collection on the second floor, these miniatures replicate the architecture and interior design of 20 American and European rooms on a 1:12 scale. In the Katz Wing on the second floor, the fashion design collection showcases historic dress and accessories as well as pieces by Chanel, Christian Dior, and other designers.
Its also worth trekking up to the third floor to see the permanent installation, You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies. This mixed media installation by Yayoi Kusama uses LED lights to create an infinity experience. While there, check out the contemporary art and photography collections.
For a good overview of the permanent collection highlights, take a one-hour, docent-led tour, offered once or twice per day, depending on the day. Or, opt for the self-guided audio tour, available in English and Spanish, instead.
