History Of The Seattle Art Museum

Seattle Weekly Vlog 6 || Olympic Sculpture Park, Chatting Books I’ve Been Reading, Museums

The history of SAM begins in early Seattle history. Here are some of the highlights of SAMs history that established each of its locations and its reputation as a world-class art institution.

The parent institution for SAM, the Seattle Fine Art Society dates back to 1906. The society staged exhibitions at various venues around the city. In 1929, it was renamed the Art Institute of Seattle as it continued to search for a permanent facility. From 1931-1933, a $250,000 donation provided for the construction of a new building located in Capitol Hills Volunteer Parktoday, the site of the Seattle Asian Art Museum.

Seattle Art Museum opened its doors to the public in June 1933 at the Art Deco building in Volunteer Park. Over the next few decades, the museum continued to expand its collections in European and Asian arts, establishing itself as an important institution for international art.

When the 1962 Worlds Fair was hosted by Seattle, the event established the city as a modern arts hub and allowed for further expansion and more diverse displays of art at SAM that continued through the 1970s. In particular, the 1978 exhibit the Treasures of Tutankhamun at the Seattle Center Flag Pavilion expanded the museums profile. The Tut exhibitions popularity and financial success fueled plans for a permanent downtown facility.

In 2020, SAAM at Volunteer Park reopened following an extensive renovation.

Pioneer Square’s Monthly Art Walk Now Has Some Stiff Competition

A few months ago, when Becky Blanchard was opening a new show in her Pioneer Square art gallery, she noticed a crowd outside. It was First Thursday, and crowds were usually a good thing for the monthly art walk.

But this crowd was watching a mini-performance by Teatro ZinZanni in Occidental Park.

“It was a great celebration,” said Blanchard, co-director of the Stonington Gallery. “But they had this huge crowd, and the galleries were empty.”

For nearly 30 years, First Thursday has been a Pioneer Square fixture and one of Seattle’s best-known, art-scene hangouts, in which galleries stay open late one night a month, and people come check out new exhibits and stroll the cobblestones.

But the concept, billed as the country’s first art walk, has become so successful that it has spawned a host of imitators and followers. The Seattle Art Museum and Henry Art Gallery also now do a First Thursday, in which they stay open late and offer free admission.

There’s also a popular arts-and-crafts market with free music in Occidental Park on the first Thursday of the month. And Seattle and other city boosters – obsessed with attracting happy, social people to downtown parks – have begun scheduling lots of free events, dance lessons and concerts, many of which happen to fall on the same day.

The competition for calendar space, coupled with economic hard times, has begun to annoy some Pioneer Square gallery owners, who have long felt a sense of ownership over First Thursday.

Hiram M Chittenden Locks

The Locks, built by the US Army Corp of Engineers in 1917, connect Lake Washington, Lake Union and Salmon Bay to the Puget Sound. They maintain the water level of the lakes at 20-22 feet above sea level and prevent the mixing of saltwater with freshwater. The visitors center provides fascinating information about this project.

The locks are in use 24/7. This is one of my favorite places to go during a Seattle free museum day. Youve gotta check it out!

Is Seattle Safe Right Now

Overall, however, Seattle has a pretty low crime rate. The normal stuff applies for cities though: after dark, you probably shouldnt go wandering around by yourself. Especially not in quiet and/or poorly lit areas. Basically, were going to say Seattle is pretty safe much safer, in fact, compared to other US cities.

Were in the framing business, so its no secret that were art fans. Fortunately, Seattle has plenty to offer in the way of art, and much of it can be found at our citys local museums. Whether youre a fellow Seattle resident looking to experience some culture or a tourist exploring the area, here are four top museum picks not to miss.

The Longest Running Established Art Walk In The Nation:

Since the early 1960s, Pioneer Square has provided a haven for Seattle’s artistic community, housing esteemed galleries, innovative exhibition spaces, and working artist studios alike. Today, Pioneer Square is the center of Seattles art scene, exhibiting the depth and range of the vibrant Pacific Northwest arts community, all within one square mile.

Did you know First Thursday in Pioneer Square was the very first Art Walk in the USA? In 1981, a group of visionary Pioneer Square art dealers printed the first walking maps and painted footprints on the sidewalks outside leading to their galleries. On the first Thursday of the month, they collectively encouraged arts patrons to come and tour each of the Pioneer Square galleries in the spirit of having a community event. First Thursday soon evolved into the popular gathering that it is today, becoming the preeminent night to debut, celebrate, and share art with the greater public. Every first Thursday of the month, Seattles historic Pioneer Square neighborhood welcomes you to join us to continue this venerated tradition with exceptional artists, innovative works, and creative kinship.

Seattle Art Museum, Downtown: Free on the first Thursday ...

The whole presentation was supposed to convey an insult to the ethics of the museum’s Security Dept. and Human Resources Dept. in a drastic yet satirical way. Using their own propaganda against them while sharing a very serious and valid message about the extreme favoritism, discrimination, and abuse that occurs at SAM. Even using “Sammy The Camel” as their Fuhrer. If radical and militant aggressive activists can put a Hitler moustache on Obama then I figured that I could make even less sense by putting one on a camel and make fun of them as well.

So that is a brief explanation of my failed first attempts at making a point in public and this is also a first try at creating a web page. I have never had a need to exist online before, though this is not just about me but rather discrimination and abuse in a workplace and it could have happened to anyone in my position who wasn’t allowed to defend themselves. I just hope that somehow this can be a source of empathy to anyone who has been the victim of this kind of nightmare as well as providing some good examples of how not to resolve work conflicts to those in charge. This is also an opportunity for me to restore my sanity as I have been tormented by these events due to their resulting mental illness for well over a year since my termination and am now using this protest as form of therapy and a method of healing. If I don’t stand up for myself and reveal the truth about what really happened there, who will?
