Baltimore Loves Matisse Thats One More Reason To Love Baltimore

In 1949, while Henri Matisse was still in the South of France cutting shapes out of colored paper, Etta Cone from Baltimore gave 600 of his works to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Over the years, those 600 were complemented by 600 more, many acquired by the Baltimore museum from Matisses family.

All that adds up to a lot of Matisse.

The BMAs holdings are not, of course, the only reason that great works by Matisse are easier to find in America than in the artists native France. Albert Barnes from Philadelphia, Sarah and Michael Stein from San Francisco, and Alfred Barr from New York all played significant roles in that happy state of affairs. But the sheer number of works at the BMA and their quality means that for any Matisse lover, a pilgrimage to that city has always been obligatory.

That is more the case in 2021 than ever. On Dec. 12, the museum will open a Matisse research center the Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies. Hosting conferences and driving publications, the center will include a dedicated exhibition space, a library and a study room. Ahead of that launch, the BMA has mounted a marvelous Matisse exhibition that offers a fresh perspective on its own rich holdings. The show, organized by Leslie Cozzi and Katy Rothkopf, is called A Modern Influence: Henri Matisse, Etta Cone, and Baltimore and runs through Jan. 2.

The Baltimore Museum Of Art Is Opening An Intimate Study Center Devoted To The Work Of The French Master

Henri Matisse, Purple Robe with Anemones .

The Baltimore Museum of Art is home to a large and highly acclaimed collection of art by Henri Matisse. Now the BMA is giving the great French artist a starring role in an ambitious new museum-wide initiative. Opening Dec. 12, the Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies offers an intimate counterpoint to the wide-ranging Matisse shows that BMA visitors know and love. It has space for small, focused exhibitions and a study room/library that, starting next spring, will be open by appointment to students, scholars, artists and members of the public. I see this as a quieter place to do some really close looking, said the centers director, curator Katy Rothkopfparticularly at the drawings, prints and other works on paper that comprise most of the museums 1,200-plus Matisse holdings, many of them rarely shown.

The Center will serve as a think tank for BMA staff and other curators and scholars, helping to jump-start new exhibitions, writing and research. The idea, said BMA curator Katy Siegel, is to rethink Matisse and his influence in a global and contemporary context. Opening Matisse up to artists of diverse backgrounds, building on his interest in North Africa, the Middle East, jazzmaking that a real artistic exchange, she said.

Who are the curators for the exhibit opening in March? The folks who spend the most time with the art, and gently remind people not to touch it 17 members of the museum’s security team.

NOEL KING, HOST:

Good morning. I’m Noel King.

The Baltimore Museum of Art has found a set of guest curators to organize an exhibition that opens next March. The curators in question are the people who spend the most time with the art and gently remind people not to touch it – seventeen members of the museum’s security team. The exhibition is part of an effort to draw in more diverse perspectives and is appropriately named Guarding the Art.

It’s MORNING EDITION.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City reduced its visitor capacity to 10,000 a day, slashing in half its average daily attendance during the holiday season, and suspended dining in its cafeteria as part of new safety measures responding to the statewide surge of COVID-19 cases. The self-imposed restrictions went into effect today, December 21, and will remain in place until further notice, the museum told Hyperallergic.

Reducing density is one important step to protect our staff and visitors, said Kenneth Weine, the Met Museums chief communications officer, in an interview with Hyperallergic. He added that the decision was taken due to high attendance numbers in recent days and in preparation for a busy holiday season for the museum.

Annually, we have very big crowds over these two weeks, Weine explained, referring to the upcoming holiday period. In recognition of that and the recent strong admission numbers weve had, were taking this step to ensure that the entrance experience is safe for visitors and staff.

COVID-19 infections in the state of New York have spiked over 80% during the past two weeks, driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. The total of the reported cases for the past week was the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Baltimore Museum of Arts newest guest curators are not who you might expect. Seventeen of the museums security officers, who spend day and night with the Maryland institutions collections, are set to curate an exhibitionaptly titled Guarding the Artopening in March 2022.

Featuring artworks chosen by the guards from some 95,000 artifacts held by the BMA, the show is poised to challenge the idea that professional curators alone are qualified to produce exhibitions, as well as further the museums ongoing efforts to prioritize diverse voices, reports Tessa Solomon for ARTnews.

The vast majority of people have a relationship to creative production that is intimate, BMA director Christopher Bedford tells ARTnews. In a sense its an experimental show, but its also entirely sensible given the familiarity the guards have with the objects.

Per a statement, a variety of eras, mediums and cultures will be included in the lineup, reflecting the unique interests of a group made up of musicians, chefs, writers and more. Officers will collaborate with museum leadership and staff, as well as art historian and curator Lowery Stokes Sims, to research the objects, plan installation designs, build a catalog and create public programming.
