The National 9/11 Memorial And Museum

Commemorating the 2977 people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001, the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum is a modern-day architecture. Located at the site of twin towers of World Trade Center, New York. A non-profit organization operates it. The museum was planned on the aftermath of the incident. Architect Michael Arad of Handel Architects won the design competition for the memorial. The construction started in 2006, and the museum was opened to the public on the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2011. The memorial has two 1-acre pools with the largest man-made waterfalls, which imprint the footprints of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. This empty pool is a symbol of the void left after the attacks, and the waterfall mute the sound of the city. There are more than 400 White Oak trees to enhance the reflective nature of the memorial. The names of all 2983 victims are inscribed using a special algorithm to create meaningful adjacencies.

The memorial also has a Survivor Tree , which survived from the rubble. It was planted temporarily in a nursery and was returned in 2010 to the site symbolizing the continuity of life after the attacks.

Dead Lecturer/distant Relative: Notes From The Woodshed 1950

Through Oct. 2. Wallach Art Gallery, Lenfest Center for the Arts, Columbia University, 615 West 129th Street, Manhattan wallach.columbia.edu.

Dead Lecturer/Distant Relative: Notes from the Woodshed, 1950-1980 is, among other things, a show about race and abstraction, with work drawn from more than 50 Asian American and African American artists and poets. The title is a mash-up of references to texts by or about the poet Amiri Baraka and the artists Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Jack Whitten. But the art is a deeply pleasurable array of pieces both familiar and surprising, from the cerebral text paintings of Arakawa to the dramatic stoneware of Win Ng.

All of the shows artists, whether famous or overlooked, had to deal with an art world that wanted and mostly still wants artists of color to make identity-focused work. Bearing this in mind as you contemplate John Pais winsome bronzes or Leo Valledors cool, nearly monochrome acrylics gives their abstraction a special kind of crackle. You can read defiance into their refusal to be more transparently political, or you can reflect on what a burden it is to have anything you do read through a racial and political lens.
