Day at Work: Art Curator

Growing up in the 1960s and 70s, cartoonist Daniel Clowes kept his passion for comics under wraps, wary of earning a reputationespecially among girlsas a “shut-in comics nerd.” At that time, comics were the mass-market stuff of newsstands: they weren’t cool, they weren’t particularly innovative, and they certainly weren’t considered to be art. But as alternative cartoonists such as Robert Crumb and Art Spiegelman came onto the scene, comics began to find their footing as an artistic medium. In Clowes’s lifetime, a passion that was once dismissed by art school teachers has now found its way onto museum walls. Case in point: Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes recently opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago , marking the first major survey of the Chicago native’s work.

NEA: I’ve read that when you realized you wanted to be a cartoonist as a teenager, you thought you’d probably end up inking for Marvel.

CLOWES: No. I can say no.

Art Poem Infinity Discourse Performance is an artist-run exhibition space and studio in Oakland. The space fosters a collaborative environment for artist working in poetry, installation, painting, and performance. We have now relocated to 2141 Broadway Ave. in downtown Oakland. With the aid of A 2012 Alternative Exposure Grant from Southern Exposure we are founding the C.A.M.O., or the Contemporary Art Museum of Oakland. Our first project is to host the Bay Area and offer their organization a location to hold classes and lectures.

Boxy 1960s Architecture Houses The Oakland Museum Of California Bastion Of Cali Pride

Its home to work by artists with connections to the Golden State from diverse periods, movements, degrees of fame, and career stages.

OMCA also boasts California History and Natural Science galleries, just in case you forgot that California is completely badass across disciplines.

The museum has a semi-secret sculpture garden visitors often miss. Its not hard to find if you keep an eye out for the signs or ask the staff.

The museum consists of a series of staggered galleries. A garden runs over the roofs, and the whole place feels like a neatly contained urban oasis.

Bring a picnic and soak in the sunshine as you reflect on how we have underrated Oakland.

The Oakland Museum Of California Had Pretty Humble Beginnings That Is If You Consider A 19th

Esoteric Survey: Oakland Museum of California

The mansion in question is the Camron-Stanford House, which is itself now a historic house museum. The city of Oakland purchased the Camron-Stanford house and lakefront property in 1907, and then had other private homes that were on the lakefront condemned in order to create Lakeside Park. Three years later, Oaklands first museum, the Oakland Public Museum, opened in the former residence of Josh Stanford, .

The Oakland Public Museums collections consisted of some 12,000 anthropological, historical, and ethnological items throughout 14 rooms the main source of these items was the collector Charles Wilcomb, who coincidentally, was hired as the museums first curator. This museum had an extensive assortment of departments, including California History, North American Ethnology, Ethnology of Asia, Africa, Central America, the Pacific Islands, and even a childrens room.

The following years saw the opening of the Oakland Art Museum, which started out as the Oakland Art Gallery in 1916, as well as the Snow Museum, which came into existence in 1922. These museums are significant because they comprise the last two museums that would later become part of the Oakland Museum of California. The Oakland Art Museum was housed on the 2nd floor of what is now the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, and contained mainly works by California artists, such as William Keith, Richard Diebenkorn, and Wayne Thiebaud, but also hosted exhibitions of modern art that included European works.

Secret Spot: Oakland Museum Of Contemporary Art

You wont see the Oakland Museum ofContemporary Art listed in guidebooks next to the Art Institute or MCA. Yetthis small space had a big hand in reviving the North Kenwood/Oaklandcommunity.

The free, outdoor museum sits on two lots on East 41st Place near Berkeley Avenue. The landscaped lawns are dotted with abstract wooden sculptures, the work of the late artist Milton Mizenberg Jr. and Chicago secret #90 in my book.

From Tree Stumps to Sculptures

The South Side neighborhood looked quite different in the 1990s. Mizenberg lived across the street from the lots, and he didnt like the view outside. Tired of the litter, abandoned cars, and loitering gangs, he began improving the neighborhood one artwork at a time. The self-taught sculptor took a chainsaw to tree trunks, filling vacant lots with art. The Oakland Museum of Contemporary Art was born.

When kids asked what he was doing with the chainsaw, Mizenberg replied, per the Tribune, Im giving this art to you. And its your responsibility to take care of it. Mizenberg added several more wooden artworks, and the city even supplied poplar, oak, and ash tree stumps. No pieces in the outdoor sculpture garden have ever been defaced.

According to neighbor Lloyd Brodnax King, seeing the sculptures drew him and other creatives to move to the neighborhood. This summer, the musician has hosted outdoor concerts among the sculptures near his home as a way to share and enjoy music in the era of social distancing.
