Hockney Meets Van Gogh At The Museum Of Fine Arts Houston
The world is full of things that at first blush dont go together at all. Peanut butter and chocolate, anyone? And in the world of art, no less so. This week, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston brought together the illustrious late-19th-century Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and the major contemporary British multimedia artist David Hockney. Didnt see that coming, did you?

These are trying times for Texans and Houstonians, of course, as they recover from the whims of nature and human hubris, so how apropos that the title of this new exhibitionHockney-Van Gogh: The Joy of Naturereminds us that the natural world is still to be celebrated. Mounted originally in Amsterdams Van Gogh Museum in 2019, the Houston show is made up of forty-seven works by Hockney in his usual mix of material, from sketches to iPad creations, and ten paintings and drawings from the hands of Van Gogh.
The obvious difference between the two geniuses is that Hockney paints much larger than Van Gogh ever could , and Hockney being always on the cutitng edge now prepares his studies by filming landscapes with multiple cameras on an SUV. And, of course, it’s Hockney who has had the benefit and great joy of studying Van Gogh over his career, as active as ever going on sixty years now.

The Obama Portraits Tour: Kehinde Wiley And Amy Sherald
Heralded as the quintessential show of spring, this MFAH exhibition offers a fresh glimpse at the iconic portraits of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald were the first African-American artists selected to do the Smithsonians National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.s official portraits of a president or first lady.
What is distinctive about these portraits is that they are firmly rooted in our time, Tinterow says. Theyre not trying to be an 18th or 19th century portrait. At the same time, they are resonant. These portraits are able to capture Baracks and Michelles dignity and accomplishment.
Wileys portrait captures President Obamas discernment, wisdom and strength, holding the viewers attention with his direct gaze. Painter Amy Sherald depicts First Lady Michelle Obama in a realm of grace and elegance, against a light blue background.
Both Sherald and Wiley were selected for their painterly style. Sherald is an emerging talent whose works are no stranger to the Smithsonian. Celebrated for his photo-realistic style and distinctive portraiture, Wiley captures the sublime beauty and strength of his subjects on large-scale canvases.

The Houston Museum of Fine Arts has brought together over 50 masterpieces by one of the most iconic artists in the history of Western art. If Van Gogh in the late-1880s had his Arles and his Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Hockney since the late-90s has had his Yorkshire Wolds in northeastern England, having returned to the U.K. after decades in Los Angeles where he produced his most iconic works.

The Yorkshire Wolds are located in East Riding county where town names such as Bugthorp, Foggathorpe, Fangfoss, Sigglesthorn, Thixendale and Uncleby sound to an American ear right out of Dr. Seuss. The boy from Bradford in Yorkshire had come full circle and moved a far thematic cry away from his famous L.A. swimming pools.
Ive always found the world quite beautifuland thats an important thing I share with Van Gogh, Hockney says. We both really enjoy looking at the world. In this part of Hockneys world, the very British geologic designation of a wold is typically an open, elevated landscape, here in Yorkshire specifically of Upper Cretaceous limestone. In this chalky, hilly wold plateau cut by dry glacial-carved valleys, Hockney produced landscapes of a rich world in constant change and flow with the seasons.

Van Gogh Exhibit Exceptional
We just visited the very lovely Museum of Fine Arts in the museum district in central Houston to see the very outstanding and exceptionally curated Van Gogh exhibit. The exhibit tracks his work and relationships in chronological order presenting works from notable museums and private collections, a few even local. We took the audio guides and easily listened to great commentary about a number of pieces as we walked room to room. It took approximately 3 hours to see the works, read the postings and listen to the audio guide commentary. It was thrilling to see this very large collection. At the end of the exhibit, there was a well stocked gift shop dedicated solely to Van Gogh with many items shipped from Amsterdam. At the very end, there is a fantastic interactive exhibit where one can place themselves in some of the paintings, sketch some of the items he painted, do a self portrait or manipulate items in a scene. Adults and children alike were enjoying this experience. When you go there is a parking garage onsite and a tunnel that connects to the building with the exhibit. Tickets were $30 and parking for 4 hours was $10. Exhibit runs until the last week in June. Well worth seeing!

Overall, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience states that guests can expect to spend about 60 to 75 minutes at their exhibit, including experiencing their VR show, which involves wearing VR goggles. The VR component is included with VIP packages, and can be purchased as an add-on with other ticket types.

HOUSTON Theres a beautiful new David Hockney-Vincent Van Gogh exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston that shows off their shared fascination with the natural world through the power of color.
Hockney Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature now on display at MFAH, marks the first time the two artists have been paired in an American museum exhibition.
The Joy of Nature brings together nearly 50 of Hockneys vibrant worksranging from intimate sketchbook studies to monumental paintings, as well as his experimental videos and iPad drawingswith 10 carefully chosen original paintings and drawings by Van Gogh.
