Tips For A Great Trip

Our advice and helpful information to make your visit one for the memory books.

• A typical visit is 1-3 hours. Give yourself plenty of time to explore.
• Our exhibits are designed for children, newborn to age 10.
• All children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver, age 16+. All adults must be visiting with a child.
• You can leave and come back the same day. Just let front desk staff know you plan to return.
• Lockers are available to store items you dont want to carry. Lockers are free for members, or $1 for non-members.
• Pets are not allowed in the Museum. Service dogs are always welcome.
• Please note: the Museum is not an allergen-free environment.

Winter Weather Policy

For the safety of our guests and staff during severe winter weather, the Museum will close for blizzard warnings and extreme cold/dangerous temperatures. Closings related to winter storms or winter storm warnings will be announced via Facebook, email, and on our website as soon as they are determined.

Daily Admission Is $10 Per Person Ages 1 Year+

Children under the age of 1 year old receive free admission.

Discounts are available for members of the military, and those who qualify for our Access programs. Memberships are another great way to save on admission!

All memberships include unlimited access to the Museum during regular hours plus additional benefits.

Make Your Group Purchase

Discounted General Exhibit and Omnitheater tickets for groups of 15 or more can be reserved by calling the Science Museum Contact Center at 221-9444. You can also purchase discounted General Exhibit tickets for groups of 15 or more online at smm.org/tickets, where the discount will be automatically added and displayed in your cart at checkout. Group discount Omnitheater tickets are not currently available online please call the Contact Center to purchase.

Minnesota Childrens Museums 2017 Makeover And New Exhibits

Its been quite a ride, but the Minnesota Childrens Museum has done a complete overhaul while still preserving the integrity of its mission.

Minnesota Childrens Museum is dedicated to providing children with a fun, hands-on and stimulating environment to explore and discover. The Museum helps to instill a lifelong love of learning by nurturing the real-world skills children need to become engaged citizens in the future

With brand new exhibits and updated classics, I guarantee that your kids AND you will have a blast! While we were there on a testing day, we had the ability to check out some of the newest exhibits. The museum gutted everything and started from scratch, so while they still have Our World, you wont find it on the 2nd floor.

The Scramble

The Scramble is the Minnesota Childrens Museums extreme indoor playground. It extends from the 1st floor to the 4th floor and is approximately 44 ft tall. Everything is big enough for adults to utilize the space, but extremely safe for the toddliest member of your family. Best Feature: A staircase from top to bottom so parents can reach their kids quickly if necessary. 2nd Best Feature: In three words: The Funnel Slide.

Mississippi River Visitor Center

Inside the lobby of the Science Museum is the National Park Service Visitor Center for the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, which is open free of charge. Mississippi River exhibits and National Park Rangers are available to help people learn about and experience the Mississippi River. The visitor center is also equipped with resources to help plan trips to any of the more than 390 national parks.

Center for Research and Collections

The staff in the Science Museum of Minnesotaâs Center for Research and Collections care for a collection of over 1.7 million artifacts, objects, and specimens and conduct research in biology, palaeontology, anthropology, water quality, and climate change. In addition to their active research both in the lab and in the field, they conduct outreach with museum visitors, school groups, fellow researchers, and the general public. The museumâs collections are held in a storage vault. Items include dinosaurs and other fossils, preserved animals and plants, and cultural artifacts from extinct and extant civilizations. Researchers visit the vault to take advantage of the collection, but it is not open to regular museum visitors except during special events.

There are many local landmarks across our state.

One icon on four legs in St. Paul has been creating childhood memories for decades.

Iggy the Iguana is well-loved by kids of all ages.

The giant statue of the reptile has been sitting outside the Science Museum of Minnesota for more than 40 years.

Iggy is such an icon, especially for people who grew up in this area, Karilyn Robinson with the Science Museum of Minnesota said.

Hes made of 13,000 railroad spikes and weighs about 4,000 pounds, and is 40 feet long, Robinson noted, adding, so you cant miss once youre down here.

Northfield native and artist Nick Swearer made Iggy. Swearer started making the sculpture while still in high school, and it took four years to complete the likable lizard.

Its quite an honor, Swearer said. I have to say he really did get attention from the very beginning.

The challenge? Harness your engineering skills in Minecraft to build the worlds best dairy farm. Whether it’s melty cheese on a pizza, buttery corn on the cob, chocolatey bowls of ice cream, we can thank cows for some of our favorite foods. To produce the milk we use to make these foods, dairy farmers need to keep their cows happy, healthy, and well fedafter all, content cows make the most milk!

For this challenge, you will need to create a home for 20 dairy cows. That includes:

• A barn to keep them happy and healthy

• A grain field with an automatic harvesting mechanism

• An automatic storage system for your grain

To create your content cows accommodations, we suggest your barn has:

• Lots of light and fresh air

• Clean places to sleep

• A place to store hay and food

• A way to keep your barn clean

Use creative mode and any materials you want. Your project can look however you wantjust keep the needs of your cows in mind. To submit,

• Take screenshots of your project and upload them. Try to get pictures of the inside and outside of your farm, along with any special features!

• Export your Minecraft World file .mcworld and attach a compressed version to the form so that we can open your world and navigate through your epic creation.

On our recent weekend in the Twin Cities, I flip flopped in deciding whether we should go to a childrens museum or a science center. You cant really go wrong with either place when your kids are 6 and 8. So, we opted for The Science Museum of Minnesota.

Indigenous Museum Access Program

The Indigenous Museum Access program allows free exhibit gallery and Omnitheater admission, along with free parking, to visitors who identify as Indigenous. This program is part of our ongoing Indigenous reconciliation work, through which we are working to acknowledge the wrongs museums have enacted on Indigenous populations. We are committed to authentically engaging with communities and honoring, amplifying, and uplifting Indigenous ways of knowing.

Field Trip Pricing And Scheduling

Field trips cost $8.00 per student for standard school groups or $3.00 per student for reduced-price eligible school groups.

Omnitheater movies cost $5.00 per student for standard school groups or $3.00 per student for reduced-price eligible school groups.

Schools with 50% or more of their students approved for free and reduced-price meals are eligible for reduced-price tickets.

Payment must be received two weeks in advance of the visit by credit card or single check, made out to the Science Museum of Minnesota. If mailed, please write Attn: Accounting above our address .

Changes may be made prior to payment and no later than two weeks prior to your visit by calling the Contact Center. If paying by check, we recommend payment being sent at least three weeks prior to arrival. We do not accept purchase orders.

All reservations must be paid in full prior to museum entry. No refunds will be issued after payment has been received. Any adjustments will be made in the form of vouchers for a future visit.

Booking a field trip

To book a field trip, please make a request online, or call the Contact Center at 221-9444. Field trips are available to book any time during our usual business hours.

Schools with 50% or more of their students approved for free and reduced-price meals may be eligible for the museum’s discounted rates for field trips, school programs, and transportation. Please fill out this form if you would like to be considered.
