The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew is a typical painting by Caravaggio , the Baroque master who took the use of Chiaroscuro to another level. This dramatic use of light and shadow is visible in this work. It depicts the martyrdom of Saint Andrew, an event that presumably took place in modern-day Greece.

The painting was produced during a time when Caravaggio was on the run after a fatal incident in Rome in 1606. He briefly lived in Naples from where the painting was taken to Spain in 1610. It was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art from the Arnaiz collection in Madrid in 1976 and has been one of the highlights of the museum ever since.

The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons is the name of two paintings by J.M.W. Turner that depict the same event. A fire broke out at the Houses of Parliament in 1834 and destroyed the building. The medieval palace was eventually replaced with the current Palace of Westminster.

The English painter and leading artist of the Romantic era in Great Britain witnessed this event from the opposite bank of the River Thames where he lived. Joseph Mallord William Turner made several sketches and produced two amazing paintings shortly after the event.

Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2 was the painting that launched into the realms of notoriety, although it took months to find its way into the public gaze. Intended for the Paris Salon des Independants show of 1912, it appears to have been too independent for the committee to approve and was vetoed. Duchamp looked elsewhere and the painting traveled abroad, where it was seen at an exhibition in Barcelona before being moved on to New Yorks Armory Show in 1913. At the time, many critics were shocked by their first glimpse of a Cubist-Futurist painting. Cartoonists ridiculed the piece in which motion is depicted by successive superimposed images. The stark color and harsh angles are suggestive of an aggression that many viewers found unsettling. But despite its Futurist overtones, Duchamp later said that while painting it he was totally unaware of the Futurist style.

The Large Bathers or Les Grandes Baigneuses is also sometimes referred to as simply The Bathers and is one of a series of paintings by Paul Cézanne featuring a similar subject. It depicts a group of women who are bathing in a pond with a town in the background.

The Jain Western Indian style developed originally at major trade centers such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Malwa after the 10th century. It is now considered to be a genre that had a great impact on subsequent Indian painting. Jain arts were mostly patronized by Jain merchants. The artists followed rigid conventions and did not attempt to create realistic effects. The palette was composed of rich natural pigments such as red, yellow, gold, ultramarine blue, and green. The flatness of the colors and the black angular outlines render the figures in static poses. According to Jain sacred texts, Kshatriyani Trishala gave birth to Mahavira, the 24th Jina. This event is recounted in the famous narrative Kalpasutra, which relates the life of Mahavira. This page of a manuscript of the Kalpasutra exemplifies the major characteristics of the Western Indian School, including flat colors, angular outlines, static poses, and exaggerated proportions of the body and face. The stylistic paradigms are broad shoulders, narrow waists, and a three-quarter profile of the face. The protruding eyes of the figure is a distinctive feature of the Jain style. The Western Indian style became a model for subsequent Indian paintings such as those of the Chaurapanchasika tradition.

The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama by Édouard Manet commemorates the Battle of Cherbourg of 1864, which was a naval engagement of the American Civil War.

The naval battle was between the Union cruiser USS Kearsarge and the Confederate raider CSS Alabama. Many spectators were able to see the action from the coast of France and saw the USS Kearsarge sink CSS Alabama.

Within one month of this battle, Manet had completed this painting, even though he had not witnessed the action himself. Manet relied on press descriptions of the battle and visits to Cherbourg to see the Kearsarge and compose this artwork.

This painting was the first known seascape by Manet with his imaginative depiction of the naval battle fought off the coast of France. The C.S.S. Alabama, the scourge of Union shipping, is shown sinking by her stern.

Construction Of The Main Building

The City Council of Philadelphia funded a competition in 1895 to design a new museum building, but it was not until 1907 that plans were first made to construct it on Fairmount, a rocky hill topped by the city’s main reservoir. The Fairmount Parkway , a grand boulevard that cut diagonally across the grid of city streets, was designed to terminate at the foot of the hill. But there were conflicting views about whether to erect a single museum building, or a number of buildings to house individual collections. The architectural firms of Horace Trumbauer and Zantzinger, Borie and Medary collaborated for more than a decade to resolve these issues. The final design is mostly credited to two architects in Trumbauer’s firm: Howell Lewis Shay for the building’s plan and massing, and for the detail work and perspective drawings. In 1902, Abele had become the first African-American student to be graduated from the University of Pennsylvania‘s Department of Architecture, which is presently known as Penn’s School of Design. Abele adapted classical Greek temple columns for the design of the museum entrances, and was responsible for the colors of both the building stone and the figures added to one of the pediments.

The building is also adorned by a collection of bronze griffins, which were later adopted as the symbol of the museum in the 1970s.

For the Philadelphia Museum of Art, renovating its early American galleries meant rethinking the history of its hometown. The museums collection of American art from 1650 to 1850 was last reorganized around the time of the Bicentennial in 1976, with the focus on famous artists and changing artistic styles. When the new galleries open on May 7, as part of the museums core project renovation designed by Frank Gehry, they will highlight the turbulence and vitality of a city where immigrants, enslaved people and citizens, long-forgotten furniture makers and successful women painters, all played their parts. The Philadelphia Museum traditionally left local Native American art and artifacts to other museums, like the one at the University of Pennsylvania. This left us short-handed, says Kathleen A. Foster, senior curator of American art at the Philadelphia Museum, so weve gone out and borrowed things. One item from the 1680s, a 26-inch wampum belt made of animal hide, glass and shell beads, is said to have been a gift to William Penn, the citys founder, from a chieftain of the local Lenape tribe. The belt depicts two figures holding hands, showing the amity between Penn and the Lenapes.
