What You Need To Know About Visiting The Udvar

  • Operating Hours are 10:00 am 5:00 pm daily.

  • Face covering policy: As of March 11, masks are not required to visit Smithsonian museums or the National Zoo. While it will not be required, all visitors who feel more comfortable wearing a face mask during their visit are encouraged to do so. The Smithsonian welcomes millions of visitors each year. We encourage visitors to maintain a safe social distance of six feet or more between households and groups when possible, but our museums get crowded, especially during peak visitation times. Visitors who wish to avoid crowds are encouraged to plan their visit during weekdays.

  • Some artifacts will not be on view. Last year, a construction project to repair the roof of the Boeing Aviation Hangar began. This two-year project is still ongoing, and will be completed in phases. The artifacts positioned under the section that is being worked on will be covered for protection.
  • Download a Museum floor plan. This will help you navigate the Museum.
  • Dress comfortably.
  • Minimize your carry-ons. All bags will continue to be checked.
  • Water is permitted in the Museum and we have water bottle filling stations located in the building. All other food and beverages must be consumed outside.

The Museum in Washington, DC is currently closed for reservations.

If you can’t visit in person, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum invites you to explore their Air and Space Anywhere digital portal from the comfort of your own home.

Do We Need Entrance Tickets For The Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum In Washington Dc

Do I need to purchase a ticket to visit the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC? I searched online and I couldn’t found any online source to buy tickets. Is this a free entrance museum?

  • 8All Smithsonian museums in the Washington, D.C. area are free to enter, including the zoo. At this writing, only the National Museum of African American History & Culture requires a timed entry pass.Aug 21, 2017 at 16:01
  • 6@choster however, the timed entry pass is free. It exists to keep crowd levels to a manageable level, not to make money. If someone tries to sell you a pass, you may be being scammed.Aug 21, 2017 at 16:41
  • 1There are no entrance tickets entry is free. There are various ticketed activities within the downtown Air & Space museum and also the Dulles annex, including IMAX movies and simulated flight rides . These can get quite expensive depending on the size of your party.

The museum is free to enter. The Virginia annex of the Air and Space Museum, the Udvar-Hazy Center, has a parking fee but it also is free to enter. The reason that you cannot find a source for buying admission tickets is that no such tickets exist.

I have visited both museums several times over the past few years and there has never been an entrance fee.

Construction Of Current Building

The museum’s prominent site on the National Mall once housed the city’s armory, which became Armory Square Hospital during the Civil War it nursed the worst wounded cases who were transported to Washington after battles. The rest of the site was occupied by a cluster of temporary war buildings that existed from World War I until the 1960s.

The space race in the 1950s and 1960s led to the renaming of the museum to the National Air and Space Museum, and finally congressional passage of appropriations for the construction of the new exhibition hall, which opened July 1, 1976 at the height of the United States Bicentennial festivities under the leadership of Director Michael Collins, who had flown to the Moon on Apollo 11.

Our last day, we took the 3 hour tour, thinking it would be OK – it was fabulous! Just the right amount of walking, a bathroom with us, with a fantastic tour guide who was extremely knowledgeable and hilarious! Our only issue was trying to find the right tour bus, since so many take off from the same spot. Arrive more than 15 minutes early so you can find your bus! Our tour person at 10:30am April 16 was a lady around 5’4″ so she held a neon orange baton in the air so we could find her in the crowds and it really was helpful. At the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, too many people to know where she was, but you could see that baton! She was also great with the many kids that were on the bus who at first was fussy and talking loud. She not only engaged them by having them participate in Q& A, she had them wanting to participate! I learned so much & had fun doing it! I hope next year we come back, we get the same guide and do the all day tour!
