Denver Art Museum Introduces Reimagined Campus & New Meeting Space

Press conference at Denver Art Museum after art vandalized

The Denver Art Museum reopened the Lanny and Sharon Martin Building and introduced the new Anna and John J. Sie Welcome Center in style with several events in October 2021. The sold-out Unveiled opening gala,Full Circle housewarming party, member previews, and an opening celebration/free admission day for the general public launched an exciting new era for DAM and celebrated the 50th year of the Martin Building,

For more than three years, the north side of our campus has been undergoing a bold transformation to improve the visitor experience while honoring and preserving the buildings historic architecture, says DAMs Frederick and Jan Mayer Director Christoph Heinrich. The events of the past year have reaffirmed the importance of art as a source of inspiration, healing and hope, and we look forward to showcasing the museums global collections through a new lens and providing new spaces for learning and engagement with the reopening of the full campus.

Designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates, the seven-story Martin Building opened in 1971 and was one of the first-ever high-rise art museums and the only completed building in North America by the renowned Italian modernist.

The transformed Martin Building showcases the museums collections from around the world and throughout history and places educational programming at the center of the DAM campus. Theres also a new rooftop terrace.

Meow Wolf Denver Set To Astonish: A ‘trippy’ Wonderland Of Art Culture And Food Opening To Huge Demand

Money for the upgrades, in part, came from Chairman of the Board Lanny Martin and his wife Sharon, , an anonymous $25 million donation as an endowment, a $12 million donation for the new Anna and John J. Sie Welcome Center and $35.5 million from the Elevate Denver bond.

The building had been closed for four years for the renovation project.

Were delighted that nearly 10 years of brainstorming, creative imagination, planning, designing and construction have led us to finally re-opening the full campus to the public this month, the 50th anniversary of the original opening of the Ponti design, Lanny Martin said. Sometimes when people think of a renovation, they think of replacing the windows and upgrading the HVAC. We did do that. But this is so much more. Each of our talented curators has reimagined the space in which their galleries are shown. So this is not just a renovation, this is a re-imagination of how we show the critical art objects that we display to all of you and to all the public.

Improvements include rooftop space with heated pavers for year-round use, which affords an almost 360-degree view of downtown and the Front Range. It also includes a new entrance for school tours to use for children, as well as the improved and more-interactive Education Center.

Stunning sunset scene created by lights at the Denver Art ...

he new Welcome Center at the Denver Art Museum is one part of the combined project to revitalize the original Gio Ponti designed North Building and establish a new Welcome Center at the heart of Denvers civic and cultural center.

The Welcome Center sits between the Hamilton and North Buildings, and provides ground level entry, ticketing, cafes and access to galleries and Educational programs. The new entry provides direct access to the second story event space which itself contains direct links to the North Building and Hamilton Building, the latter designed by Studio Libeskind.

The event space is a single elliptical volume that cantilevers above the ground. Its all glass facade provides extensive views around the cultural center. Made with curved glass panels, the facade creates an elegant surface ripple as its appearance responds to the curvature of the elliptical plan, the environment and the viewers own movement around the building. This simple but distinguished center of the Denver Art Museum creates a cohesive experience while celebrating the iconic and eclectic mix of existing architecture and public space.

Creating Light From Above

A vast, glass-clad corridor connects the welcome center to the Martin Buildings gallery halls, offering a panoramic view of the castles northern tower. Designers from Machado Silvetti and Fentress Architects used the ceiling in this space as a creative canvas for light play.

The effect provides downward illumination while drawing the eye upward to the magnificent skylights framing the tower in picturesque form.

We designed the ceiling as a perforated surface with an integrated lighting system, says Randazzo Dwyer. The perforations in the surface essentially allow light to pass through the ceiling from a grid of LED lights above. The perforations are located all across the Main Hall ceiling, but the holes are denser at important areas, such as the door to the restaurant or the elevator to the Event Space.

Because traditional ceiling products were insufficient for an installation of this scope, CertainTeed Architectural was tapped to custom engineer an entirely new configuration of lighting integration with fire-rated medium density fiberboard.

The first challenge was finding a structured core material for the ceiling panels that would provide the level of acoustical comfort required for a museum while allowing light transmission from behind the panel. Fully engineered MDF lay-in panels were ultimately selected and perforated with hundreds of crisp, cleanly finished square holes to create the randomized pattern.

But officials have also incorporated new touches throughout. Those include video, audio, new information cards that include little-known facts and interactive exhibits like the Create a Textile Together. Visitors can create a tile with a symbol that represents family, or something important to them, then explain it on the back. It can be hung with the others in the display, or taken home.

Heinrich talked about the increase emphasis on indigenous art of North America.

It’s an important commitment staff agreed upon, he said. Being located on the homeland of the Arapaho the Cheyenne and Ute people, along with many other indigenous nations that call this place home, we acknowledge a deep impact that indigenous people had and continue to make on our institutions.

On display now: Denver furniture designer Laura Kishimotos Yumi chair, which was commissioned in 2018 by the museums curator of architecture and design, Darrin Alfred. One of my favorite things about the chair is how bold and unapologetic it is, Alfred says. Its meant to be looked at from all different angles.

Heres a peek at everything else to know about the the new-and-improved Martin Building, which reopened to the public this fall.

2. The three-year, $175-million renovation celebrates and even augments Pontis vision. The design team began by rehabbing the towers existing exterior, replacing many of the damaged, original pyramid-shaped glass tiles with replicas supplied by facade specialist Bendheim these also cover the buildings new exteriors. The unconventionally shaped windows, some of which frame views of the mountains, were swapped out for more energy-efficient versions . And speaking of views, a rooftop terracepart of Pontis original vision that wasnt built until nowis a prime spot to take in the cityscape.
