Getting Ready At The Doubletree Downtown Philadelphia

Annette Gordon-Reed, 2020 Carl M. Buchholz Memorial Lecture

Kelly had everything perfectly laid out and waiting for us when we arrived to begin capturing her wedding day. Her dress blew us away. A delicate sheath dress with the most exquisite beading and a show stopping T back, it was absolute perfection. Shed taken the care to add an overskirt for the more traditional church ceremony in order to save the sleek look for the reception and wow everyone once again. Her classic Manolo Blahnik pumps were elegance in a shoe, and made a beautiful resting place for her diamond tennis bracelet. Everything about Kellys wedding day style was elegant and timeless. And as she put her dress on and affixed her earrings, the bride before us was one for the ages.

For his part, Bill was every bit the dashing groom to Kellys elegant bride. His sharp and well tailored suit was set off by his velvet shoes. He was somewhat reserved throughout the morning as he got ready. Having opted to skip a first look, he was anticipating seeing his wife to be at the altar of Old St. Josephs. So we delayed no further, it was time to get to the chapel.

Bank Of America Terrace

The open-air terrace provides a dramatic overlook to the Museum’s plaza, while its striking veranda columns frame panoramic views of Independence National Historic Park and the First Bank of the United States. The Terrace offers a seamless transition into receptions through towering double doors leading to Liberty Hall.

Tips For Entering Dar For Your Wedding Day

There are two main entrances to DAR for your wedding: C Street and 17th Street. C Street is popular because your guests will end up on the Terrace, where they will either be sitting for your wedding ceremony or joining your cocktail reception if your ceremony was offsite.

If arriving on 17th Street, your guests will come through the grand wooden doors, and arrive in the Pennsylvania Foyer. From here they might be headed into the Library for your cocktail hour or they will be headed to the Terrace. If the latter, they will have to pass through OByrne to get to the Terrace. At this point in the day, your OByrne set up will be nearly complete. If you wish to keep the set up a surprise, youll need decor to keep it out of sight. In the photo below we used a hard wall flanked by drape.

Both of these entrances require your guests to walk up a long flight of stairs. There is access for wedding guests in a wheelchair. The ground floor entrance on C street, just past the Terrace stairs, will take you to an elevator. You can wind through the building to get to the OByrne Gallery. This path is necessary for those in wheelchairs, but it is a very long walk. But if you have folks who just have trouble walking, I think going up the stairs will ultimately be less work.

Museum Of The American Revolution Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony was set up in the entranceway of the MOAR, and they have these bronzed statues of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burrs duel that they put up on either side of the altar. I believe they can also have smaller wedding ceremonies available on the rooftop, but dont hold me to that. DFW Event design did all the amazing floral designs and ceremony setup.

Something Old Something New: Inventing The American Wedding

Washington, D.C. – Fifteen vintage wedding dresses, as well as groom’s attire, will be on view at the DAR Museum from April 16 through September 4, 2004. Something Old, Something New: Inventing the American Wedding will trace the evolution of the American wedding from its simplest beginnings in the 18th century to the lavish etiquette-laden affair it is today. The exhibition will showcase the DAR Museum’s collection of wedding dresses, as well as dresses from The Valentine Richmond History Center.

Something Old, Something New: Inventing the American Wedding provides a thorough examination of the customs and traditions associated with the wedding ceremony as it evolved during the past 200 years. “If you ever wondered why brides wore white, then the DAR Museum’s exhibition of wedding dresses and wedding finery is not to be missed,” says DAR President General Linda Tinker Watkins. Since most people consider their wedding day one of the most important days in their lives, the objects associated with this day are often cherished and saved for generations. The DAR Museum collection of early American decorative arts included many items commemorating weddings. For the first time in the DAR’s 114-year history, these objects have been brought together to show the changing traditions surrounding the American wedding.

The Museum Of The American Revolution

Museum of the American Revolution weddings are relatively new as the building has only been around a few short years. Yet, its in an incredible area in the city and very close to some of the best locations in Old City. Plus, it is very close to Penns Landing if you want to go there for photographs.

Museum Of The American Revolution Wedding Reception

The main venue reception room is gorgeous and perfect for about 175 guests. The venue space is bathed with natural light coming in from the windows for a light, airy look in the long summer months for receptions. Your guests can hang out on the balcony and enjoy views of the city and take a break from the dancing. I have been here several times and cant wait to go back!

    Advice For Dar Wedding Ceremonies

The DAR Portico and Terrace are fantastic places to host a DAR wedding ceremony. A wedding ceremony on the DAR Terrace gives you that stunning backdrop. A DAR Portico wedding ceremony offers shelter from light rain while still allowing you to host your ceremony outdoors. I have squeezed 92 chairs onto the Portico for a ceremony.

I have had poor weather at the Daughters of the American Revolution forced wedding ceremonies into the OByrne Gallery. This is hardly a slouch of a Plan B. Those hardwood floors! Those classic white walls with architectural detailing. I couldnt ask for a better wedding ceremony Plan B location in Washington DC!

As a second indoor option, you can have your DAR wedding ceremony in the Pennsylvania Foyer.

Bonus tip for the Ultimate Guide: your DAR wedding ceremony chairs will be moved inside for the dinner reception. There is no place on-site to store a second set of chairs!

A Sneak Peek At Philadelphias Museum Of The American Revolution

In the fall of 2014, contractors broke ground on what would soon become the Museum of the American Revolution, right in the heart of Old City.

For months, Philadelphians have been anxiously watching as the space just around the corner from The First Bank of the U.S. and Carpenters Hall was under construction.

Now, the Museum of the American Revolution stands tall and beautiful, awaiting its grand opening on April 19, 2017.

Philip Gabriel Photography was lucky enough to scope out this stunning museum at their pre-opening reveal party. We have just one word to say about this new space: Wow!

Our associates at Brûlée Catering invited us, along with a handful of fellow event professionals, to see Philadelphias newest event venue. The location is guaranteed to be a hotspot for weddings and events, with its beautiful, unique ballrooms and views of the city from a gorgeous balcony.

We are so excited for this new Philadelphia benchmark to open! We cant wait for the public to see the many exhibits and age-old artifacts on display. For now, to get a sneak peak of the event spaces, here are some beautiful images from the Museum of the American Revolution. Enjoy!

    Dar Cocktail Hour Logistics

Engaged couples have at least two great cocktail hour options at DAR. My first choice is to host your wedding cocktail hour in the Library. This room will cause your wedding guests jaws to drop. The DAR Library is such an impressive room. It permits only a short set up time, but other than the bar, you dont NEED to do that much for your wedding cocktail hour! I often dont put anything in there except a few high cocktail rounds. There is already plenty of seating and tables in the Library. You might want to display your escort cards there if you dont put them in the Pennsylvania Foyer.

Another popular DAR wedding cocktail hour location is the other side of the Terrace the non Washington Monument side. If you have great weather on your wedding day, this is a great spot for your wedding guests to mix and mingle. There is a third option: if you are dining in the Library, you could cocktail in the OByrne Gallery! If your ceremony is in OByrne, and you arent renting the Library, you could use the Pennsylvania Foyer.

    Sample Wedding Floor Plans

    Discovering History: Baroness von Riedesel

Above: DAR wedding with 83 guests. Guests for this wedding entered from 17th Street. We had a wall installed to block the view of OByrne when they walked through. After the ceremony, guests retraced their steps back to the Pennsylvania Foyer to go to the Library for cocktails. During the cocktail hour, we moved the wall to be the bar back on the portico. We also flipped the welcome sign in the Pennsylvania Foyer to be the seating chart. When you use the Library, it will only be for that one part of the day, so youll want to put a bar out on the Terrace for later.

Above: DAR wedding with 90 wedding guests. This wedding moved the ceremony to the Pennsylvania Foyer but everything else was done to the original plan. The cocktail hour was outside, dinner was in OByrne and dancing was on the Portico.

Above: 120 wedding guests. The weather cooperated and we were able to do everything as planned outdoors. Guests entered from C Street. We had the ceremony and cocktails on the Terrace, dinner in OByrne, and dancing on the Portico.

Above: DAR wedding with 124 wedding guests. We had the ceremony outside, though its not marked here. We moved the cocktail hour to the Library due to chilly weather and we did the champagne tower there. After dinner in OByrne, we danced outside later on.

One of the most incredible and unique qualities of The Museum of the American Revolution is the incredible outdoor terrace that overlooks the city. It was an absolute stunner of an evening for their guests to enjoy cocktails outdoors in the crisp autumn air.
