A Living For Us All: Artists And The Wpa
During the Great Depression, the federal government established the Works Progress Administration as a way to get artists and other workers employed again. The program also provided opportunities for artists to engage with and document the communities around them.
This new exhibition is primarily culled from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts own collection of Works Progress Administration art including paintings, photography, printmaking and textiles. Some works naturally focus on themes of labor during a period of economic strife others are less literal and turn to abstraction to show the realities of the 1930s.
Several of the works created within the program became controversial for their unflinching depictions of American culture, making them even more significant documents of the times.

The Art Of Disability Culture
This exhibition, originally presented at the Palo Alto Arts Center in 2021, explores the experiences of people with disabilities and highlights the Bay Areas unique place in the disability rights movement. Part of the shows intent is to create an intergenerational dialogue between artists with disabilities who remember the struggles before the 1990 passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and those born after it.
Featured artists include painter Bill Bruckner, dancer-choreographer Antoine Hunter, digital artist Michaela Oteri, photographer Anthony Tusler and emerging artist Rachel Ungerer.

Academy Of Art University Automobile Museum
The Academy of Art University Automobile Museum is situated at Washington and Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco. This museum in San Francisco was built to restore and promote the antiquity of cars. The rare cars on display highlight the intricate craftsmanship and designs from over the decades. They have a marvelous collection showcasing vintage Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Buggati, etc. all from 1920s to 1960s. The vintage models on display are not only American but also include cars from Italy, Britain, Germany, etc. The university allows access to its design students to study these stunning cars which are in excellent condition.

Golem: A Call To Action

GOLEM: A Call to Action is an exhibition in three parts by Los Angelesbased artist Julie Weitz, comprising three video artworksGolem v. Golem, My Golem as a Wildland Firefighter, and Prayer for Burnt Foreststhat draw on Jewish allegory, folklore, and spiritual practice to confront societal and ecological disasters. The legend of the golem originates as far back as the Middle Ages, when Jewish mystics imagined the creation of a clay humanoid as a meditative technique for becoming closer to God. By the nineteenth century, popular Yiddish folktales characterized the golem as a helper, companion, or rescuer of an imperiled Jewish community. In this exhibition, Weitz revitalizes golem mythology to frame a moral imperative for action on the social and ecological issues we face today.

Society Of California Pioneers
One of the oldest organizations, the Society of California Pioneers founded the first library in the state. Established in 1850, it is now run by the direct descendants of its founding members and serves as a public museum and research library. The Society memorializes every defining moment in Californian history and there are many of them! From the Gold Rush to the 1906 earthquake to the early settlement of the state, all milestones are preserved carefully thanks to the Societys repository of primary source materials. San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery
The San Francisco Arts Commission is the city and countrys arts council. It has multiple contemporary art exhibitions across the city, located in the War Memorial Veterans Building, a storefront gallery near the City Hall, and one in City Hall itself. The Commission completely oversees the art across the city in the form of graphics, murals, and sculptures. The commission honors contemporary artists and their work in its various galleries. San Francisco Art Institute
As a private and very small art college, the San Francisco Art Institutes primary goal has always been education. Originally established in 1871, it was completely destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fires that followed, which destroyed the institutes art collection completely.
After an extensive restoration, a student-directed art gallery, a lecture hall, and studio space were added to the original building. This allowed students and faculty to focus on exhibitions, open performances, and other cultural and artistic activities that werent possible before.
Famous artists like photographer Annie Leibovitz, Academy Award for Best Director Kathryn Bigelow, and portrait painter Kehinde Wiley all went to school here.
The museum hosts a number of events and exhibitions throughout the year covering everything from contemporary sculpture to abstract photography.

The Artists Eye: Tammy Rae Carland David Huffman Lava Thomas John Zurier
This new exhibition is curated by four esteemed Bay Area artists photographer Tammy Rae Carland, painter and installation artist David Huffman, multidisciplinary artist Lava Thomas and painter John Zurier with each section revealing their own personal visions and priorities, through the work they selected from both the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive holdings and their own personal collections.
Carland emphasizes language and wordplay, while Huffman explores art history, the African American experience and his own personal history in his section. Thomas sought to highlight the stories of Black artists in BAMPFAs collection, women in particular, while Zurier chose different styles of landscape paintings to investigate relationships to nature, solitude and distance in art.

Chinese Historical Society Of America Museum
The Chinese Historical Society of America Museum was created to document the true impact of Chinese immigrants in helping build California.
In fact, 19th-century Chinese immigrants played a crucial role during the Gold Rush, the building of the Central Pacific Railroad, and mining work much of which was kept out of history books for decades.
In addition to a significant archives collection featuring documents and historical photographs, the museum also features memorabilia, advertising trade cards, sheet music, and toys.
Theres advertising from the groundbreaking Kublai Khan nightclub and watercolor paintings by Chinese-American artist Jake Lee. Visitors can also see the famous 154cm×533cm mural entitled One Hundred Years: History of the Chinese in America by James Leong.
The CHSA also runs community programs that include monthly Mandarin and Cantonese meetings for new learners of the language, open roundtables to discuss issues affecting the Chinese American community, book clubs, and film screenings.

Sfmoma Artists Gallery At Fort Mason
The museum also operates the Artists Gallery at Fort Mason, a nonprofit gallery located at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco’s Marina district. The Artists Gallery was founded in 1978 as an outlet for emerging and established Northern California artists. The gallery holds eight exhibitions each year, including solo, group, and thematic shows. Works cover a range of styles and media, from traditional to experimental, and all works are available for rent or purchase.
In 2021, SFMOMA announced they are closing the artists gallery along with a publishing platform and the film program.

This former military base is worth a visit even if its just to enjoy its stunning views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture , however, has a lot more to offer to visitors than great photo opportunities.
The FMCACs main focus is on rotating exhibits and performances that include everything from art by SF Bay Area residents, seminars on social and cultural topics, and a theater season filled with plays and performances.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Run by the National Park Service, the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is a lesson in Pacific maritime history. Located in the western end of Fishermans Wharf, it comprises the visitor center, maritime museum, library, and the fleet of historic ships. Its biggest vessels date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, alongside the hundred smaller boats. It also consists of the Aquatic Park District which consists of a park and promenade along the bay. Africa Pacific And The Americas

The African art collection is presented thematically rather than geographically, emphasizing the aesthetic and expressive qualities of the art.
The Oceanic collections were charter collections of the de Young, their nucleus formed in 1894 at the California Midwinter International Exposition in Golden Gate Park. Additional Oceanic works of sculpture, basketry, tapa, ceramics, and lithics have since been acquired, bringing the holdings to more than 3,000. Highlights of the collection include a 10-foot housepost from the Iatmul people of the in Papua New Guinea, a group of brightly painted carvings used in malanggan ceremonials of New Ireland, a roll of feather money from Nindu Island of Santa Cruz, a fan from the of Polynesia, a rare navigation figure from the Caroline Islands of Micronesia, and a selection of powerful wood carvings from the Maori peoples of New Zealand.

The Bayview Opera House
A historic site, the Bayview Opera House was constructed in 1888. It’s San Francisco’s oldest theater, and one of the few large buildings to have survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. A performance venue and community center, the Bayview Opera House is an anchor for one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods.
The Cartoon Art Museum
Fishermans WharfCheck out 7,000 original pieces of cartoon memorabilia, including comic strips, comic books, anime, political cartoons, graphic novels, and underground comics, and discover when and why they were created, and more. African American Art & Culture Complex
The AAACC is the cultural heart of the Fillmore, a San Francisco neighborhood full of Black history. Their galleries and theaters regularly host local artists debuting new works. Fort Point National Historic Site
