When You Are At The Museum Talk To The Helpful Staff

History of The Renwick Gallery Building

When we first entered the lobby, there was a museum staff member with a microphone who went over the layout of the museum and shared where the sensitive exhibits are and answered any questions. My 8 year old asked if they have an exhibit on Kamala Harris and the nice staff member said, not yet! Shes making history right now!

The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals is one of the National Museum of Natural Historys most talked-about exhibits. Not only does this expansive collection feature meteorites, a tectonic plate gallery, and an 11 pound topaz, its also home to the Hope Diamond. Formed 1.1 billion years ago, the Hope Diamond has been one of the worlds most beautiful and prized jewels since its discovery in India in 1666.

Handicapped Parking At The Smithsonian Natural History Museum

Hotel near Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

There is handicapped parking on Madison Drive near the entrance to the museum. The museum has added two wheelchair accessible ramps that will take you to the top of the steps at the Madison Drive entrance. If there is a line to get into the museum, these ramps also take you directly to the front of the line. The Constitution Avenue entrance is easier, with much less uphill ramp, but there is no street parking of any kind.

Parking For The Smithsonians

Iâm planning a day trip to Washington DC this Saturday to go check out a few of the Smithsonians such as the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of History, etc.

Can anyone recommend a place to park nearby so that I donât have to take the metro?

If you arrive early itâs pretty easy to find street parking around the Mall area, on the streets in front of the museums, or on Independence Ave or Constitution Ave.

If youâre starting your day a bit later it might still be worth driving around a bit to look, or you could head for Union Station and park there, but that will involve a bit of walking.

Public parking is very limited near the National Mall. On-street parking in Washington, DC is restricted during the morning and evening rush hours. On street parking is not restricted during the weekends. There are many free parking spaces on the National Mall along Madison and Jefferson Drives in front of the Smithsonian Museums but they usually fill quickly. Most of the free on-street parking is restricted to two hours. I would suggest parking in East/Potomac Park parking lot on Ohio Drive. It is a free lot that is very convenient to the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial. If you are looking for a parking garage, there are Colonial Parking Garages available in the nearby vicinity. One location is 1201 Pennsylvania Ave. Here is a great website that will located the nearby parking garages for you,

How Do You Get To The Smithsonian

Its really hard to find good parking near the Smithsonian .

Although D.C. follows an easy to understand grid system, driving in-and-around the city is not my favorite thing on the planet. Metered parking is expensive .

Parking at the National Zoo itself is $25 !

As a result, my favorite way to travel around D.C. is by metro.

Youll need a metro pass . The metro stops by the main museums on the blue, green, orange, and yellow lines. I usually hop off the metro at the closest stop and walk from there.

Artist Roundtable: Art & Identity Between Cultures

I am looking for parking lots or garages that are close walking distance to the Smithsonian/National Mall. I would prefer not to pay more than about $25.00 a day. We will be there the week after Easter so I realize it will be crowded. Do the lots fill up quicklyâ¦how early would I need to arrive to get a spot? Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The above poster seems to work for the Reagan Building Parking garage, given their user name. And while there is a fine line between information and advertising, I believe their post crosses it. The Reagan Building is nearest to *PART* of the Mall and *SOME* of the Smithsonian Museums . But if you are going to the National Gallery or Air & Space other garages are closer.

This is a teaser for the next Smithsonian, the Museum of African American History and Culture.

It rotates through different exhibitions that discuss everything from slavery, to the funk music that so defined African-American culture.

Please note that when the main museum opens in September of 2016, this exhibition will likely be retired.

It is on the east side of the second floor.

Parking Around The American Art Museum Late Afternoon

I’ll be in DC this coming Thursday, flying in the early afternoon. I am looking to get over to the American Art Museum and would like to know about parking in the area. Am thinking of possibly checking other museums out so would like a cheap place to park while I wander around the area.

Any suggestions?

Why are you renting a car for this trip? Public transportation is generally a much better and cheaper way to get around DC.

It’s a bad idea to drive around the DC at any time close to 5 pm on a weekday. Traffic is some of the worst in the country .

You’ll only be able to leave your car at a metered spot on the street for a couple hours and you’d need to fill the meter. There’s no guarantee you can find a spot super close to the museum.

If you need longer parking, you’d need to find a garage. Bestparking.com can help me with that.

I’d recommend taking public transit instead of driving.

You can park at a meter for $2 an hour for typically 2 hour max or

you could do what I would do and drive a little north of the museum to find neighborhood parking with no meter but a two hour limit until 6 . Therotically, you can park at 4 and not have to move the car until the next morning.

Keep in mind this is not an easy place to find neighborhood parking.

Great museum – don’t miss the courtyard or the nearby Verizon Center.
