Museum Officials Say The Decision Is Unrelated To Protests Over The Sackler Family’s Ties To Purdue Pharma

The Smithsonian Institutions Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, DC say that they will henceforth be known as the National Museum of Asian Art in a rebranding that emphasises the focus of their collections.

Previously, the museums promoted the identity of the Freer/Sackler in promotional material. A spokeswoman for the institutions denied today that the rebranding was related to protests over the Sackler familys ties to the drug OxyContin and the opioid addiction crisis in the US. It is specifically to clarify the visitor experience as surveys showed confusion regarding the museums’ content, she said. Arthur M. Sackler’s name remains on the building.

Lori Duggan Gold, the museums deputy director for operations and external affairs, said that their individual names would remain intact despite the adoption of the new moniker.

The shift toward a unified brand was first reported by The Washington Post.

The two museums already share a board of trustees, a budget and a strategic plan. Gold said that plan now aims to build upon the strengths of these two complementary galleries to serve as one national museum.

Founded in 1923, the Freer Gallery of Art was the Smithsonians first art museum and features the Asian art collection of the industrialist Charles Lang Freer.

Dont Call It The Freer/sackler Call It The National Museum Of Asian Art

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery have long described themselves as the Smithsonians Asian art museums. Now the two institutions want to be known as the National Museum of Asian Art.

Dont call it a name change, though. Museum officials say it is a rebranding that clarifies the missions of the joint institutions. And, they say, it has absolutely nothing to do with international protests over the Sackler familys connection to the opioid crisis.

Its a shift toward a unified brand and not away from the gallery names, Deputy Director Lori Duggan Gold said. The new brand will help visitors understand that they can expect to see Asian art during a visit to a museum.

National Museum of Asian Art appears in large print on the new logo and at the top of the museums redesigned website. The museums legal names the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery are in tiny print below . Both names appear in stone on the museums exteriors.

The National Museum of Asian Art replaces Freer/Sackler, Where Asia meets America, a tagline that Duggan Gold noted didnt include the word museum at all. The new brand was designed in-house.

Georgetown University marketing professor Karthik Easwar likes the change, but disputes the museums description of it.
