The Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland

MOCA Cleveland is a 34,000 ft2 non-collecting contemporary art museum designed to serve as a catalyst for creativity and growth in a cosmopolitan Cleveland neighborhood, which is home to one of the countrys largest concentrations of cultural, educational and medical institutions. Because MOCA is a non-collecting institution one of the relatively few such contemporary art museums in the country its new building does not need to accommodate collection galleries. Flexibility is key to enable the museum to display works in a great variety of media and genres.

The four-story building, which anchors the Uptown district, liberates space for a plaza and rises 60 feet from a hexagonal base to a square top, where the primary exhibition space is located. All four floors contain areas for either exhibitions or public programs. Located on the corner of its triangular site, the building is designed with entrances on all its sides to allow it to open along its entire perimeter and be used in many different ways.

Moca Cleveland Emerges From Two Years Of Soul

CLEVELAND, Ohio Numerous American art museums have been in crisis mode over the past two years, buffeted by the coronavirus pandemic, and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion raised by the Black Lives Matter movement after the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland is part of that story, having undergone nearly two years of soul-searching over race-related controversies that led to the resignation of former director Jill Snyder in 2020, and the cancellation of two national touring exhibitions in 2020 and 2021.

How Did It Get Here

The story behind such statements is complicated, but heres a summary:

In June 2020, days after George Floyds death, New York artist Shaun Leonardo publicly accused MOCA Cleveland of censoring him by canceling an exhibition of his drawings of police killings of unarmed Black men and boys.

The museum took its unusual step to avoid traumatizing community members who had experienced police violence, but the ineptness of the cancellation demonstrated to some critics that the institution, however well-intentioned, was also out of touch with other members of the citys Black community.

In April 2021, following her turbulent, two-year curatorial fellowship at MOCA, La Tanya Autry, a curator and activist who is Black, published an opinion piece in the online journal Hyperallergic accusing MOCA Cleveland of creating and sustaining a racist environment and a culture of anti-Blackness.

Autry also accused the museum of canceling a show she was working on until she threatened to go public.

Within weeks of the publication of the article, however, MOCA withdrew from The Regional, a major exhibition on contemporary art in the Midwest that it had co-organized with the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati and the Kemper Art Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. The show is moving on to those venues as scheduled.

She said that La Tanyas article suggests that my efforts fell short I apologize that that is her perspective.

Powerful Abstraction By The Late Carmen Herrera Highlights Cleveland Museum Of Arts Latest Round Of Art Acquisitions

Powerful abstraction by the late Carmen Herrera highlights Cleveland Museum of Arts latest round of art acquisitions

CLEVELAND, Ohio The Cleveland Museum of Art added an important abstract painting to its collection by the Latin-American artist Carmen Herrera, a native of Cuba who moved to New York in the 1950s and who labored in near obscurity for decades before achieving recognition late in life.

The painting, Mardi Soir, is a minimalist geometric abstraction with sharp-edged shapes in black and cobalt blue describing a flag-like, zig-zag image that pulls the eye diagonally back and forth across the image.

The museum described the painting, a highlight of the latest round of acquisitions approved by trustees, as among the most important examples of her historic paintings.

The painting adds to a small but growing concentration of modern and contemporary artworks in the museums permanent collection by artists of Latin-American heritage. It comes two years after the museum acquired Troyanas , an abstraction in acrylic on canvas by Cuban artist Zilia Sánchez.

Measuring 42 inches high by 64 inches across, the Herrera painting dates from 1973, when the artist had developed a style concentrating on flat, angular shapes. Works from that period are the most highly sought among museums and collectors today, the museum said.

The sculptures will be featured in an upcoming exhibition opening in the museums Focus Gallery in March 2023.
