Museum Of Contemporary Art North Miami Appoints Adeze Wilford As Curator

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami is pleased to announce the appointment of Adeze Wilford as curator. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Wilford joins MOCA North Miamis senior leadership team during an exciting time in the museums growth. Wilford most recently served as assistant curator at The Shed, New York where she curated the New York Times acclaimed exhibition Howardena Pindell: Rope/Fire/Water in 2020. She assumes her role at the museum on Feb. 14.

Inspired by its surrounding communities, MOCA connects diverse audiences and cultures by providing a welcoming place to encounter new ideas and voices, while nurturing a lifelong love of the arts. In her new role, Wilford will lead the curatorial departments dynamic program of exhibitions that highlight historically under-explored artists and movements, and present first museum solo exhibitions for emerging artists. She will be responsible for overseeing MOCAs permanent collection, public art initiatives, and spearhead the museums distinctive guest curator program.

Wilford currently serves on the board of The Queens Museum, New York. She has contributed to various publications including Howardena Pindell: A New Language, Young, Gifted and Black, Fictions, and Black Refractions and has appeared on several panels. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in art history and African-American studies from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

Major Areas of Responsibility

• Establish and maintain meaningful, mutually beneficial community partnerships with local organizations and community stakeholders throughout North Miami and Miami-Dade County.
• Collaborate with colleagues to grow existing community engagement initiatives, including programs in schools, libraries, parks, and other venues.
• Create and implement program evaluation criteria for qualitative and quantitative feedback to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of community engagement programs.
• In line with the museums strategic plan, advance inclusion, diversity, equity, and access initiatives in order to promote MOCAs values, mission, and vision.
• Participate in Board of Trustee meetings, including relevant committees.
• Collaborate with the exhibitions and education departments to create opportunities for community engagement focused on upcoming exhibitions.
• Collaborate with the development and communications departments by providing a clear schedule of upcoming community engagement events , and assisting with grant proposals and gift solicitations.
• Facilitate and participate in events related to community engagement and educational programs, including fundraising and cultivation events.

• Plan, develop, and manage budgets related to community engagement, working closely with the Deputy Director.

Qualifications

The Museum Of Contemporary Art North Miami

North Miami, Fla. January 5, 2021 In January 2021, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami will launch Art on the Plaza, a year-long series of newly commissioned, temporary public artworks by Miami-based artists on MOCA Plaza. Featured artists include: Reginald ONeal, Studio AMLgMATD , a collaborative presentation by Morel Doucet and Stephen Arboite, Nice N Easy , and Najja Moon. The museum will host a series of virtual programs to coincide with the art installations throughout the year.

Artists Morel Doucet and Stephen Arboite will showcase a collaborative work that explores Miamis historically African American neighborhoods. It highlights the specific flora and fauna in those neighborhoods, highlighting issues of gentrification and celebrating the uniqueness and beauty of the African diaspora in a series of banners on MOCA Plaza, based on original artworks. This installation will coincide with Haitian Heritage Month.

The program is made possible with major support from the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency .

• Description: Join MOCA on the first Sunday of every month for story time on MOCA Sunday Stories, followed by a DIY early childhood art project. Sponsored by the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency, this early childhood art series promotes childrens reading, motor skill development and socialization. MOCA Sunday Stories are a great way for kids to bond with their parents or guardians as they build together.

MOCA is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by reading Draw Together by Minh Le. The book tells the story of a young boy and his grandfather when their lack of a common language leads to confusion, despair and silence. But as they sit down to draw together, something magical happenswith a shared love of art and storytelling, the two form a bond that is beyond words. MOCA is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with a ceramics project. Participants will discover the ancient skill of pottery making and learn about contemporary ceramics artist Steven Young Lee. Participants will make pinch and coil pots using air-dried clay.

Fanatics make a point to visit jazz clubs in the South and Northeast that were revolutionary decades ago. They sit in dusty rooms, pay too much for cocktails with too little booze in them, and fight the boredom that comes with watching old cats trying to replicate the traditional sounds that they, and the rest of us, though afraid to admit it, are a little tired of hearing at this point. They ought to take themselves to Little River, where, hidden among quaint old houses and warehouse spaces is a sprawling jungle called the Center for Subtropical Affairs. A nursery and “ecological learning center” by day, this botanical serves up cutting-edge live music, original cocktails, and a plethora of Instagram-worthy backdrops by night. It feels like you discovered something when you walk into the place, which at first glance looks to be some guy’s backyard. But it’s not. Every Thursday is Jazz Night, which draws some of Miami’s finest musicians. The place is huge: You can easily find a spot to sit and chat with friends or mack on your date without being a jerk and interrupting the performers. Or, you know, you could find a seat near the stage and have your mind melted by the crazy sounds Miami’s jazz kids are concocting these days.

The Museum Of Contemporary Art North Miami Announces Two Upcoming Installations For Its Art On The Plaza Series

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami is pleased to announce two new site-specific installations coming to the MOCA plaza on July 29 and Oct. 14. Autumn Caseys Cliff and April and Chire VantaBlack Regans To What Lengths were selected following MOCAs 2022 open call to artists for its Art on the Plaza series.

The successful open call received applications from over 75 professional artists in an effort to promote temporary installations on its public plaza and inspire the community and museum visitors. The competitive review process and artist selections were overseen by a MOCA-appointed selection committee.

On view from July 29 through Oct. 7, Caseys Cliff and April is a sculptural installation featuring two swans, each secured on their respective plinths. The sculptures are illuminated from within via solar-powered lights. Existing as a pair to echo the natural practice of swans who mate for life, Cliff and April creates a tender space for the contemplation of beauty, love, ideas of worship and familial bonds. Included with the installation is a performance with a written prompt of questions to inspire conversation between the artist and the audience.

At the base of each tree will be a round mat with cushions for seating, inviting viewers to engage with the work while looking up. My goal is for anyone who interacts with this work to embrace feelings of comfort, relaxation, and vulnerability, she continued.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami is thrilled to announce the continuation of its “Art on the Plaza” 2022 season, featuring Miami-based artist Onajide Shabaka. Through an open call, South Florida artists were encouraged to apply for a commission for the new “Art on the Plaza” season.

“Her Touch Smooths Rough Waters,” Shabaka’s new public artwork, is centered on water. A set of objects are in conversation when the two plinths in the fountain are activated. A large-scale sculpture on one side traces the serpentine forms common in Shabaka’s work. These patterns, which include a mix of straight and curved bands, zigzags, circles, and semicircles, result from the artist’s pivotal research in Suriname, a South American Amazon rainforest country. Shabaka created an abstraction of natural shapes inspired by the sophisticated insect architecture and botanical root systems seen along the Georgia coast and subtropical Florida. The shape becomes a multidirectional discourse about the impact of the natural environment on urban space and the human relationship.

The first commission’s installation will run from July to mid-September 2022, while the second commission’s installation will run from late September to January 2023.

At the Museum of Contemporary Art, in a continuing effort to incorporate the diverse voices and perspectives of North Miami , the museum celebrates both Haitian Heritage Month and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month throughout the month, offering a strong array of education and public programming doing. Due to popularity, MOCAs exhibition My Name is Marine was extended to October 2, 2022. Alison M. Curated by Gingeras, the exhibition is a monographic presentation of four decades of paintings, sculptures, drawings and film, from the iconoclastic, ground-breaking Polish-born artist Marine. Drawing on new scholarship and a trove of never-before-performed works, My Name is Marine is the first retrospective to comprehensively examine all periods of Marines life and work. Throughout the museum, Marines extraordinary biography and prolific oeuvre represent a deeply moving monument to the perseverance of the human spirit and the power of art to work through traumatic loss. Credited as the first artist-eyewitness to directly depict Shohs own experiences, Marins unique approach to figurative art attempted to unite across cultures and generations. A catalog for My Name Is Marine is due out this summer. After closing in October, the exhibition will travel to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Honestly, who knew it was even remotely possible to have a night out in Miami Beach for $25 and during a Pride event, no less? The 2021 Miami Beach Pride Bar Crawl, which was presented by Miami Beach Pride organizers on June 16, made that happen. Twenty-five bucks got you a drink at five of the area’s most-frequented LGBTQ watering holes: Gaythering, Axel, Nathan’s, Palace, and Twist. For plenty of folks, the month of June marked the first time in more than a year that people felt comfortable enough to venture back out socially into the bar scene. Attendees drank, danced, and drank some more at each of the five bars. The well-attended crawl attracted a diverse crowd from across the LGBTQ community, making for a refreshing deviation from a usual night out surrounded by mostly cisgender white gay dudes. In celebration of Miami Art Week 2018, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami will present a groundbreaking exhibition celebrating the founding of AFRICOBRA the black artist collective that defined the visual aesthetic of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the collective which came out of Chicago.

In 1968, artists Jeff Donaldson, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, and Gerald Williams founded AFRICOBRA, which stands for African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists. AFRICOBRAs visual language is defined by the use of text, bright Coolade colors, dynamic, gestural markings, and raw, emotive, celebratory images of confident black figures. The vision these artists created went on to define the aesthetic of the Black Arts Movement. This historic exhibition will explore the founders individual careers and the artists who exhibited with them between 1968-1973 as well as how AFRICOBRAs philosophy manifested into their works as a group.
