About The Strong Museum

The Strong is one of the largest history museums in the United States and one of the leading museums serving families with highly interactive exhibits and programs. The Strong houses the worlds largest and most comprehensive collection of historical materials related to play.

Play has the power to teach, spark imagination, and create joy. Lets play!

Press Room

The Strong is centrally located at One Manhattan Square in downtown Rochester, New York. Explore resources for press and media outlets, and find contact info here.

The Strong is a highly interactive, collections-based educational institution devoted to the study and exploration of play. The Strong explores play in order to encourage learning, creativity, and discovery and to illuminate the American experience in particular and human experience in general.

The Strong accomplishes this through exhibitions, programs, publications, and other activities that engage, entertain, and enlighten diverse audiences, especially families, children, educators, and scholars.

To support these activities, The Strong collects, preserves, and researches historic objects, manuscripts, and other materials that reflect and document the importance of play in American cultural history in particular.

The Strong is the most exciting museum on the planet! Were a playful organization, but were not fooling around.

Learn why play is important and how it helps us grow from museum staff.

National Toy Hall Of Fame

The National Toy Hall of Fame is part of the Strong National Museum of Play where toys that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period are recognized.

There are so many different aspects of play that it will take more than one day to see the whole Museum. Do you remember playing with Paper Dolls? There are some there for the kids to dress.

There is an area that asks you if you know what certain items are such as the old vacuum cleaner or a Rice cooker.

There are also tangrams. A tangram is a geometric puzzle with 7 pieces that are arranged to create images of various objects. This ancient game, which originated in China, has been enjoyed by many American children throughout the years.

We Drove 5 Hours To Playagain

Strong Museum extends hours for winter break

This is probably one of my favorite museums in the USA. We specifically went to Rochester to visit again. The museum is huge with numerous areas of play for the 2-14 year old There was a Wegmans supermarket, an area dedicated to trains, a Bearenstein Bear area with 5-6 different play zones, an adventure area I could go on and on. We did not see the whole museum and we were there from open to close with a 6 and 11 year old. My husband really enjoyed the Super Hero area and the Video Game machine area. I am personally a fan of the pinball area:-) We did stop for Happy Hour, half priced milk shakes..Which were awesome and thick.

We are delighted to hear that you and your family had such a great time at the museum. We love to hear feedback like this from guests who enjoy the exhibits enough to come back again and again! We hope to see you again soon!

The National Toy Hall of Fame, at The Strong museum of play in Rochester, said the finalists for induction this year also include billiards, Cabbage Patch Kids, Fisher-Price Corn Popper, Mahjong, Masters of the Universe, pinata, Risk, sand, The Settlers of Catan and a toy fire engine.

“These 12 toys represent the wide scope of playthings — from one of the most universal playthings in the world like sand to a game-changing board game like Risk to the popular adult game of billiards,” Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections at The Strong, said in a news release.

“Whether old or new, for kids or adults, all 12 of these toy finalists greatly influenced the world of play.”

Online voters are being called on to choose their favorites in a “Player’s Choice” ballot, and the online votes will be counted as one member of the 23-member of the National Selection Advisory Committee in choosing the official inductees.

The Strong National Museum Of Play

The Strong National Museum of Play is part of The Strong in Rochester, New York, United States. Established in 1969 and based initially on the personal collection of Rochester native , the Museum opened to the public in 1982, after several years of planning, cataloguing, and exhibition development for the Museum’s new building in downtown Rochester. For at least fifteen years after its opened, the mission of the Museum was to interpret the social and cultural history of average Americans between 1830 and 1940, under the direction of H.J. Swinney and William T. Alderson. Mrs. Strong’s collections of dolls and toys, American and European decorative arts, prints, paintings, Japanese crafts, and advertising ephemera provided a firm foundation for this mission, and were supplemented with collections purchased and donated to more fully support the Museum’s early mission. The Museum received considerable local and national publicity and support and substantial financial support from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Exhibitions and Public Programs division.

In the 1990s, the Museum’s Board of Trustees and Director changed the Museum’s mission to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of play. Since then it has refined and increased its collections , and expanded twice, in 1997 and 2006.

Excellent Day For Hours Of Fun

We’ve visited several kids’ museums and this competes for the “best of” title. As some have said, the upstairs doesn’t have much for little kids, but parents will enjoy visits down memory-lane, and older kids appeared to be enjoying stuff. The Reading Adventure-land, Sesame Street, Barenstein Bears, Wegmans, and a room with an old-school stove, piano, dollhouse, dress-up, etc. kept our 2-year-old entertained for the whole day! I liked that staff were around cleaning-up constantly, keeping rooms ready for new play. We were there on a sunny weekday, so I’m sure it’s a lot more chaotic other times. As it was, we usually had all the elbow room we needed and never had to wait to do things.Didn’t like that all the arcade games cost. Couldn’t they at least make it like a penny or nickel arcade? I’m sure they’d still make enough bank off of that.Could they make more of the Sesame Street characters come to life with animatronics and/or voices? Could some more old toys be hands-on?$1 carousel and free garden outside are nice ways to ease the “we’re leaving now” struggle. We skipped the butterfly garden. Seemed pricey for such a little one. I’m sure it’s pricey to keep up, but sure they could make it work. Maybe it’s too small, so they aim to discourage too many people from crowding it.

Strong Museum Of Play Will Be Home To National Archives Of Game Show History

Don’t think you’d make the cut as a Jeopardy! contestant? In the near future, The Strong National Museum of Play may be able to make you feel like one.

The institution which already features the National Toy Hall of Fame and the World Video Game Hall of Fame last week announced it will become home to another unique attraction: the National Archives of Game Show History.

Game-show artifacts scripts, marketing materials, creative and production plans and even set elements will form the heart of the archives, the museum said in a statement.

Chris Bensch, the museums vice president for collections, later explained: Over the years, lots of people have envisioned being a contestant on Jeopardy!, so wouldnt it be great for The Strong museum to have the Jeopardy! answer board or the podiums for the players, so that you can feel like youre right there in the middle of the game?

Through the archives, The Strong also will produce video interviews with significant game-show creators, producers and hosts, as well as iconic contestants.

It is wonderful to hear about the National Archives of Game Show History stepping up to capture and preserve the legacy of game shows, Wink Martindale, host of such hits as Gambit, High Rollers and Tic Tac Dough, said in the museums statement. Without this initiative, many primary resources relating to these shows, as well as oral histories of their creators and talent, risked being lost forever.
