The Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to collecting, preserving and presenting the history of Boca Raton. Now it its 46th year, the organization promotes historic preservation and education through its exhibitions, archival services, guided tours, and other unique programs. The Museum now serves as the communitys official Welcome Center providing information on Boca Raton past and present.

Located in the heart of downtown Boca Raton, this Center will provide a new beacon of iconic cultural infrastructure here along the Gold Coast, filling the gap that has long existed between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. The proposed site is set at the north end of Mizner Park and includes the existing amphitheater and the raw parcel that is already zoned for cultural usage and has remained undeveloped for over three decades. The proposed Center will finally bring to fruition Mizner Parks founding promise to serve as Boca Ratons cultural core, while driving much needed foot traffic through Mizner Park and giving riders of Brightline an exciting reason to stop in Boca.

+ Youth Orchestra Of Palm Beach County

The mission of the Youth Orchestra of Palm Beach County is to provide young musicians with exceptional music education and performance experiences while developing an appreciation of classical music within the community.

Established in 1993 through a project of the Junior League of Boca Raton to provide youth orchestra opportunities in Palm Beach County, YOPBC premiered on May 7, 1994, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach.

Our Board of Directors, Parent Association and Artistic Staff are committed to providing professional training at minimal cost to the young musicians. Our board members and parents volunteer hundreds of hours to making the organization operate effectively.

Many of our early members are now professional musicians performing as members of the worlds most prestigious orchestras, chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles and bands. Other graduates are now lawyers, engineers, business leaders and teachers. Recent graduates are currently enrolled in some of the finest colleges, universities, schools of music and music conservatories in the nation.

+ Festival Of The Arts Boca

Established in 2007, Festival of the Arts Boca is South Floridas premiere literary and performing arts festival. More than just programming it is a unique way of bringing world class performers, authors and speakers to Boca Raton a casual and festive atmosphere. Tickets range in price so as to be accessible to everyone.

The Festival presents world class artists artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Lang Lang, Joshua Bell, Renee Fleming, Pat Metheny, and Arturo Sandoval. The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, West Side Story, and Raiders of the Lost Ark have been performed with live orchestra. World-renowned speakers over the ten years have included Edward Albee, Sir Salman Rushdie, acclaimed historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, Richard Ford, Thomas Friedman, and Fareed Zakaria.

The Festival celebrates the special quality of life in Boca Raton and Palm Beach County and the special qualities of Mizner Park, which has been selected by the American Planning Association as one of the ten best urban places in the United States. The Festival is special, because of the venue, the season, the quality and diversity of its cultural offerings and because of the opportunity for young and old to celebrate the traditions of the great arts and to be exposed to the incredible diversity of the performing and literary arts, at the highest levels.

Boca Raton History Museum

The Boca Raton History Museum is located in downtown Boca Raton, Florida. Sponsored by the Boca Raton Historical Society, whose offices and library are located there, it is also the welcome center for Boca Raton. The building it is housed in was Boca Raton’s original town hall, which began as a commission in 1926 to well-known architect Addison Mizner, designated by the Boca Raton Council as town planner some of his elegant details have been preserved, together with antiques, some of them Spanish, from his collection. It also housed Boca’s first fire bay , which now houses the museum’s gift shop, Boca Raton’s police station, and its first library. A small second floor, not currently open to the public, provided housing for the fire chief. The Boca Express Train Museum, a few blocks away, is also operated by the Historical Society.

Weinroth Speaks Out Against New Bill

Weinroth, who represents Boca Raton and Delray Beach, also spoke out strongly last week against Senate Bill 620, which the Legislature passed during the recent session.

If Gov. DeSantis signs it, businesses could sue cities or counties over regulations that owners claim caused at least a 15 percent drop in revenue. Because the legislation exempts certain businesses and allows local governments to exempt other businesses, the Florida League of Cities had changed its opposition to a neutral position. Boca Raton and Delray Beach had opposed the original bill.

Weinroth, though, said the bill would make it financially difficult to impose any regulation, no matter how public-minded. He expressed the frustration of many local officials at Tallahassees continued attacks on home rule.

They think that theyre the adults in the room, and we should just be happy for what they give us, Weinroth said. This is the classic slippery slope. is too broad and would lead to lots of lawsuits.

SB 620 has not gone to DeSantis. When it does, he will have 15 days to sign it, veto it or allow the bill to become law without his signature.

Chef Virgilio Martínez is world-renowned for his non-profits efforts to rescue and preserve Perus native and indigenous plants and seeds.

He studied and received his certifications at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa and London. During his formative years, he worked at well-known restaurants such as Lutèce Can Fabes and served as executive chef at Astrid & Gastón in Bogotá and Madrid.

In 2012 he opened Lima, a modern Peruvian-style restaurant located in the Fitzrovia neighborhood of London. It was awarded a Michelin star. In 2014 a second Lima restaurant was opened in the Covent Garden district of London and dubbed Lima Floral. In 2017, a third Lima restaurant was opened in Dubai at Citywalk.

A special night to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1972 epic historical drama film produced, written and directed by visionary Werner Herzog. Attendees not only watch the film, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, but they will join in a riveting discussion with Werner Herzog and the films co-producer, José Koechlin (who is also the CEO of Inkaterra Resorts and was one of the organizers of the Museums current exhibition Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru.

The famous film by Herzog documents the fictional journey of Don Lope de Aguirre, a ruthless Spanish conquistador, who vies for power while in Peru searching for El Dorado, the mythical empire of gold. Following the screening, the award-winning filmmaker shares tales of the extraordinary feats undertaken to create this film.

Delray Rejects Boca Museum Bid To Run Cornell

In a surprise move, the Delray Beach City Commission on Tuesday rejected the proposal to have the Boca Raton Museum of Art operate the Cornell Museum.

Mayor Shelly Petrolia and City Commissioner Juli Casale voted to pay the museum $125,000 through Sept. 30. The agreement would have lasted for another year after that. Petrolia and Casale voted to end the lease with Old School Square, which had been operating the Cornell. Ryan Boylston and Adam Frankel, who opposed terminating the lease, voted against.

The surprise was that Shirley Johnson joined them. Johnson had joined Petrolia and Casale in voting to end the lease. But she agreed with Boylston that the commission would have been rushing the agreement with the museum.

Boca Raton Old City Hall

The Boca Raton Old City Hall is a historic site in Boca Raton, Florida, United States. It is located at 71 North Federal Highway. The former city hall now houses the Boca Raton Welcome Center and the Boca Raton History Museum. On October 16, 1980, it was added to the U.S.National Register of Historic Places. + The Harid Conservatory

The HARID Conservatory is an internationally recognized professional-training school for gifted young dancers. Students from across the United States and from other countries are selected for enrollment through a stringent audition process. Artistic talent is the primary admission criterion.

HARIDs alumni have been employed by more than eighty professional dance companies across the United States and in Canada, Europe, South America, and Asia. Many have distinguished themselves as soloist and principal dancers in leading companies.

HARID presents two series of dance performances each year. The Mizner Park Amphitheater, located in Downtown Boca Raton, is a popular outdoor amphitheater, colonnade and concert green that serves as a social, cultural and educational center for South Palm Beach County residents and beyond. No Changes In Term Limits For Pbc Commissioners

Palm Beach County will not ask voters to change term-limit rules for county commissioners.

Since 2012, the policy has been that commissioners can serve two consecutive four-year terms. The length of service can be longer if, as in the case of Steve Abrams, someone fills a vacancy and serves fewer than four years. After sitting out for at least one term, a commissioner can run again.

The county imposed term limits in response to a lawsuit. Some commissioners wanted to place on this years ballot a proposal to raise the limits to 12 years, which is the rule in Broward County. State legislators also have 12-year term limits. The Legislature just limited school board members to 12 years.

As County Mayor Robert Weinroth acknowleded, however, many voters react in a visceral and bipartisan manner to any seeming attempt by politicians to help themselves. Individual priorities can take longer than eight years to accomplish, and theres no evidence that term limits lead to better governance, but the commission rejected the idea.

Boca Arts Center Issues And Delray Votes No On Boca Art Museum Bid

Three issues remain between Boca Raton and the group that wants to build a performing arts center in Mizner Park.

Boca Raton Arts District Exploratory Corporation has asked the city to lease it the property next to the amphitheater. BRADEC would build a complex that includes the amphitheater, which the group would renovate.

The city wants assurance that BRADEC not only could build the center but operate it without seeking subsidies from the city. Last May, the city council authorized staff to begin negotiations on a lease. Council members will get an update at Mondays workshop meeting.

According to the staff memo, the city and BRADEC agree on many points. 67 percent of events at the center would be open to the public. BRADEC would have to raise 75 percent of hard construction costsactual building, as opposed to designwithin three years. That amount would have to be at least $55 million. The city, which now operates the amphitheater, could hold as many as 18 events each year. BRADEC would have to raise at least $6 million in working capital toward operations.

One unresolved issue concerns BRADECs reserve fund. The city wants the group to finance just 25 percent of that from unfunded pledges. BRADEC wants to finance 50 percent.

Another issue is insurance. BRADEC wants the city to cover the full replacement cost of the centerpossibly $30 million. The premiums could run to $150,000 per year. The city wants the coverage to be included as part of its umbrella policy.

Understand When And How Long The Project Will Take

Once the City grants approval of the long-term ground lease, anticipated in the first quarter of 2022, the Centers focus will be on raising the capital and shortly thereafter recommence design and planning efforts. Upon the full raising of the capital and completion of the design, planning, permitting and pre-construction phases, construction would commence, with an estimated 24-28 month construction schedule. Although the entire Center would commence construction simultaneously, the Center will thrive to turn over the newly-improved Amphitheater first by 2025, the Citys centenary year with the full Center opening late 2026, early 2027 What a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the last 100 years with next-century culture infrastructure as we look ahead to the next 100 years.
