Renowned artist Frida Kahlo is a giant figure in Mexico City, and Museo Frida Kahlo is one of the citys most popular attractions. The home is sometimes known as the Casa Azul because of its bright exterior.

Interestingly, only a small number of her paintings are on display here. This house in the traditional neighborhood of Coyoacan is where Frida was born and raised, so its more of a historic site to see the way she lived rather than a place to view her artwork.

That said, there are a couple of Frida portraits here. The first room youll enter features art pieces by Frida, her husband Diego Rivera, and others. Then, you move into her actual living quarters, past the colorful blue and yellow kitchen.

Upstairs, youll find a bedroom where noted Russian Marxist Leon Trotsky stayed during his exile in Mexico. Additionally, Frida had day and night bedrooms that were used for separate purposes. Its always fascinating to see how iconic figures lived in their daily lives.

Moving to the back of the house, guests walk through a final room and hallway with more artwork. Then its out into the scenic courtyard featuring statues, flowers, a seating area, a gift shop, and some of those fun head holes.

Frida Kahlo In Coyoacan

In Fridas time, Coyoacan was a neighborhood in the outskirts of Mexico City. The city was considered to be held only in downtown and a few surrounding areas, but as years passed by the city grew on its sides and Coyoacan became part of it. This picturesque neighborhood keeps its essence, with large colonial houses, a colorful market with traditional food and crafts, and parks to sit and enjoy some quality coffee, churros, ice creams, and other street food. Its a must-visit, walking around and enjoying the city.

If you visit Mexico City, this is one of the unmissable spots. So book your tickets ahead and enjoy your tour!

How to Buy Frida Kahlo Museum Tickets

Tickets to the museum for the next three days are sold out. Are there any resale tickets online or any time on where to find tickets? Thank you!

Its really hard to find resale tickets for that and pretty much guaranteed that you wont get it if you just show up. Youre honestly not missing much. Its by far the most overrated and underwhelming museum in CDMX.

I disagree, but Im not huge on large and overwhelming museums. This one is small and interesting. I liked this one for that reason. It depends on what you like to see. It was my favorite in CDMX.

Instead go the Diego Rivera and Frida Khalo Casa Estudio museum in San Ángel. They also lived there and it has few visitors. You can se artwork from both artists. The house itself is very interesting, as it is one of the first modern construction in the country.

This comment is highly underrated

I don’t think the tickets can be resold because you buy them online under a specific name for a specific time slot. You could try to go there and wait to see if someone misses their slot. But there’s also a line for that.

Its worth it if you can score some tickets regardless of the other comments. Get there early and check out coyoacan .

Go to Anahuacali or the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo art studios instead!!

We went on a Sunday afternoon and the line was super long. The staff member at the front entrance told me I could buy my tickets online and I wouldn’t have to wait. We bought our tickets online and went right in. The house and garden were wonderful to see in person, my kids really enjoyed walking through the rooms and especially the current exhibit with her clothing, corsets and shoes.

We visited the museum using MexCity Tours during a long layover at Mexico City Airport. The Frida and Diego House is a wonderful museum and it moved us to view the lives of these two amazing people. The house is beautiful and the history and art make it very special. This is a must-visit if you are in Mixico City.

The house and exhibits are amazing but the way the museum is run leaves a lot to be desired…They let far too many people in so you feel rushed through as though you are on a conveyor belt. Make sure you buy a ticket online prior to your visit as we waited outside for over an hour. The gift shop was closed when we went which was really disappointing after waiting 20 years to visit the museum flying over from the UK and hoping to buy a souvenir.

This place can get very busy, so the top tip is to arrive early! Go as soon as they open if possible. If you get there by 9:45 am, youll most likely be waiting in a much smaller line than if you arrive in the middle of the afternoon. Then again, Ive seen student groups come in buses at that hour, so you just never know.

You can make reservations on their website, which is a good idea. Often theres a separate line for people with reservations/tickets and those without . The line for those with tickets does move quicker.

UPDATE 2022: Due to the current health crisis, the Frida Kahlo Museum is not currently accepting walk-up visitors. Everyone who wishes to visit must purchase tickets online and bring the ticket, either on paper or on their cell phone.

Covid Precautions Taken By Frida Kahlo Museum

You have to get your temperature taken and use hand sanitizer before entering Museo Frida Kahlo. They are strict about the walking paths you can take throughout the buildings and they only allow a certain number of people into each room at a time.

I actually preferred this visit to my three prior visits. Wait times were shorter, it was more orderly, and you werent crowded in any of the rooms. There arent many upsides to Covid-19, but that is a small one.

Museo Frida Kahlo Tickets Lines And Audio Guides

The museum opened at 10 a.m. on a Sunday and we arrived at 9:45 a.m. to get into an already growing line. There were two lines. On the left is the line for people with tickets and the right is the line for people without tickets. We had bought our 10:30 a.m. entrance tickets online in advance, which is highly recommended unless you want to wait in the ticket-less line for at least two hours. The ticket-less line works as standby, letting people through based on how many who have already bought tickets show up. We saw plenty of people show up, figure out they were out of luck, and leave.

Tickets are $235.40 pesos and you can purchase one for a specific day and time two months in advance. I couldnt get a credit card to work on their website but a debit card worked fine. Be sure to bring a print out of your ticket.

If you want to take photos with any type of camera inside, youll pay $30 pesos at the entrance and theyll give you a special sticker.

They also have audio guides for $75 pesos available at the entrance. They have detailed panels in English and Spanish throughout the museum that gave plenty of information. The audio guide would have provided even more details but I learned a lot at the museum without it.

Frda wanted her home to become a museum for Mexico, so that she could enjoy it. It was for this reason that, after her death, Diego organized a museum for Frida Kahlo here in Mexico. As a permanent exhibit within the Museum since it opened in July 1958, the Blue House displays the ambience that inspired Frida for her creations as well as her personal possessions.

After visiting Casa Azul, take a short walk to the center of Coyoacan and get lunch. There are a number of restaurants a few blocks away from the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyocan by Parque Centenario . Ive eaten at both La Cerveceria de Barrio and Antiguo Palacio De Coyoacan and they were both tasty.

If you have more adventure in you, grab your food to go, head down to Xochimilco and have a party on the canals.

Kahlo museum ticket gets you into Museo Diego Rivera – Anahuacalli. You can use your Anahuacalli ticket for one year after the purchase of a Museo Kahlo ticket.

Visiting both Xochimilco and Anahuacalli after going to Casa Azul is a great idea because of how far south from Mexico City you have to go to get to them. It makes the most sense to get these three knocked out in one day if you can.

And thats how to spend an amazing day in Coyoacan and how to maximize your time is the Frida Kahlo Museum.

Museo Frida Kahlo In Mexico City

Visit Museo Frida Kahlo or the Frida Kahlo Museum when youre in Mexico City. The museum located at La Casa Azul, her home, is an intimate look at her life and work.

I made plans to visit Museo Frida Kahlo because its been noted as a popular place in Mexico City to visit, but leading up to the trip and even the day before our visit, I wasnt convinced. I heard about the long lines even if you had already bought a ticket. I read accounts saying the place was overrated. I learned from other travelers that the museum didnt feature a lot of her art.

I hadnt thought the museum would have an impact on me, and I hadnt planned to write its own post about it before visiting. But here we are. Read on for more thoughts!
