Censorship Of Seasons Of Life And Land

In 2003, a National Museum of Natural History exhibit, Subhankar Banerjee‘s Seasons of Life and Land, featuring photographs of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, was censored and moved to the basement by Smithsonian officials because they feared that its subject matter was too politically controversial.

In November 2007, The Washington Post reported internal criticism has been raised regarding the institution’s handling of the exhibit on the Arctic. According to documents and e-mails, the exhibit and its associated presentation were edited at high levels to add “scientific uncertainty” regarding the nature and impact of global warming on the Arctic. Acting Secretary of the Smithsonian Cristián Samper was interviewed by the Post, and claimed the exhibit was edited because it contained conclusions that went beyond what could be proven by contemporary climatology. The Smithsonian is now a participant in the U.S. Global Change Research Program.

Whats Inside The National Museum Of American History

Much beloved as a source for all things Americana, the museum features the most American artifact of all: the Star-Spangled Banner Flag. The flag flew above Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem and now awaits your visit in a permanent exhibition.

Another treasured item on display is the top hat worn by President Abraham Lincoln on the fateful night of April 14, 1865, when he set off to Fords Theatre and was later assassinated in by John Wilkes Booth. Lincolns hat is among a number of presidential relics that each tell a story in an exhibit entitled The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden.

This 750,000 square-foot museum contains much more than presidential artifacts. The women who stood by the side of our nations leaders are memorialized in The First Ladies, which boasts more than two dozen gowns, fine china and other furnishings. And dont forget to click your heels over to the aforementioned ruby slippers found in the American Stories exhibit, a fascinating compilation of story-making artifacts throughout American history.

Secretaries Of The Smithsonian Institution

In 1995, controversy arose over the exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum with the display of the Enola Gay, the Superfortress used by the United States to drop the first atomic bomb used in World War II. The American Legion and Air Force Association believed the exhibit put forward only one side of the debate over the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and that it emphasized the effect on victims without discussing its use within the overall context of the war. The Smithsonian changed the exhibit, displaying the aircraft only with associated technical data and without discussion of its historic role in the war.

The National Mall is major divider in terms of the type of neighborhood. South of the Mall is dead at night. This can be welcome for those who enjoy a peaceful walk through the National Mall, or families who want to be in a less chaotic atmosphere. The area is surrounded by massive government buildings and when five oclock rolls past commuters travel home leaving the area bland and sterile.
