Located In The Heart Of Downtown San Jose Next To A Gorgeous Park This Small Museum Packs A Big Punch

They rotate the display of their permanent collection fairly often, which is nice, because at any one time they might not have a ton of space to show off the goods. The upstairs is reserved for a changing exhibition which often highlights contemporary West Coast artists. Wacky stuff abound.

Make sure to take a breather on the upstairs balcony and look out on the beautiful empty lot to the back of the museum, where trash blows by on a cool breeze past walls tagged with colorful graffiti. OK, the view might not be fab- but the weather always is, and the handmade wooden bench swing is a great place to sit with a pal and chat about what you saw inside.

Dont miss the museum café which sits in an old-fashioned church attached to the contemporary-looking museum. Theyve got reasonably priced sammies and fresh salads and BOOZE! You heard it here first: a little buzz is sometimes the key to appreciating art.

San Jose Museum Of Art

This downtown museum prides itself on its origins: In 1969, the beautiful 19th century building that then housed a library was threatened with demolition, and a group of citizens banded together to save it and open an art gallery. That local effort grew, creating this remarkable downtown facility, including a light-filled wing added in the 1990s. Permanent exhibits present an outstanding and varied collection, including contemporary abstracts, photography, figurative painting, sculpture, and works in new media by Bay Area artists. If youve got kids, check the schedule for family-friendly, hands-on activities to help children get excited about art.

Primary And Secondary Education

Up until the opening of Lincoln High School in 1943, San Jose students only attended San Jose High School. San Jose has 127 elementary, 47 middle, and 44 high public schools. Public education in the city is provided by four high school districts, fourteen elementary districts, and four unified school districts . In addition to the main San Jose Unified School District and other Districts within San Jose such as the Alum Rock Unified School District and the East Side Union High School District, other nearby unified school districts of nearby cities are Milpitas Unified School District, Morgan Hill Unified School District, and Santa Clara Unified School District.

The public schools in San Jose declared bankruptcy in 1983 this was the largest school district bankruptcy to that date in the US. Observers identified the reasons as a drop of 5,000 students in the preceding years, the difficulties imposed on school finances by Serrano v. Priest in 1968, the reduction of tax monies because of 1978 California Proposition 13, and the local teacher’s union contract requiring a raise in pay.

The San Jose system were jointly named as “Library of the Year” by the Library Journal in 2004.
