Metropolitan Museum Of Art Cuts Sackler Name Amid Opioid Ire

NEW YORK The Metropolitan Museum of Art is dropping the Sackler name from seven exhibition spaces amid growing outrage over the role the family may have played in the opioid crisis.

The New York museum and the Sackler family jointly announced on Thursday that the institution and their once-deep-pocketed benefactors would part ways, removing the Sackler name from the iconic building, including the wing that houses the Temple of Dendur. The wing is named after brothers Arthur, Mortimer and Raymond Sackler, who donated $3.5 million for it in the 1970s.

Our families have always strongly supported The Met, and we believe this to be in the best interest of the Museum and the important mission that it serves, Sackler descendants said in a statement.

Arthur, Mortimer and Raymond Sackler have all died, but descendants of Mortimer and Raymond Sackler currently are principal owners of Purdue Pharma, the company that developed OxyContin, a widely prescribed and widely abused painkiller.

In September, a bankruptcy judge conditionally approved a settlement in which the Sacklers agreed to pay $4.5 billion and give up ownership of Purdue Pharma, which would be reorganized. They would in turn receive immunity from future lawsuits. Victims families and a group of states criticized the deal. Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty to criminal charges in late 2020.

How Long Time To Budget For The Met

Short Answer: 3 hours inside

If you are going to the MET and wondering how long to stay inside you came to the right place. The museum is massive the largest in the US so that should be something to take into consideration. It also has a dense collection of paintings and sculptures. You could easily spend the entire day if not days inside but that really depends on why you are headed to NYC.

As an authorized tour guide, I can tell you from experience that 3 hours tends to be the limit for most people. After that their eyes start to glaze over a bit. Personally, I stick by that same rule. Your mind can only absorb so much beauty at one time! If you are an avid museum goer and really want to spend longer than that, then I highly recommend taking a break every 75 minutes.

A break means having a seat somewhere usually in one of the cafes and letting your mind rest. If you are going in the afternoon then a break means a cocktail!

Why You Should Go

There is no civilization, no century, no medium, no undertaking forgotten by the Met. The entirety of human culture is represented in some form. Only the Louvre and the British Museum receive more visitors in a given year, but even these venerable institutions cannot match the breadth of the Met. And this is the real value of the Met, particularly for New York City. It allows all the other museums to specialize. Major museums are freed from the responsibilities of being the leading cultural institution of the city and can take much greater risks in their exhibitions, focus on niche mediums and provide real depth. The Met may not be avant-garde, but its mere presence allows everyone else to be.
