Located in the former townhome of Frederick Douglass and with a mission of teaching visitors how to look at African art in a way that promotes cross-cultural communication, the Museum of African Art began as a private education institution in 1964. In 1981 it transitioned to a public institution, was renamed the National Museum of African Art, and became another free museum in Washington D.C.

This list of museums in Washington, D.C. encompasses museums defined for this context as institutions that collect and care for objects of cultural, artistic, scientific, or historical interest and make their collections or related exhibits available for public viewing. Are The Smithsonian Museums Open

The Smithsonian has now opened most of their DC museums. Those that have not yet reopened will all be reopening soon. The National Gallery of Art is also now open with no tickets needed.

The only Smithsonian museums in Washington DC that have not yet reopened have the following reopening dates:

  • The Hirshhorn Gallery will reopen on August 20. .
  • The Postal Museum is reopening on August 27.
  • All museums except three are open to full capacity and do not require any advance tickets to enter. Most museums are closed on certain days of the week now, so check the Smithsonian website to see which museums are closed on any given day. The three that still require tickets to avoid overcrowding are:

  • African American History and Culture Museum tickets They put tickets up on the site 30 days out, and they also have some same day tickets available at 8:15 AM each day. If you want a same-day ticket, you must be ready to click at 8:15 AM sharp. By 8:16 AM, these will likely all be gone.
  • National Zoo tickets. Go onto the site. Its pretty easy to reserve free next day tickets. Same tickets on a weekend might be tight. But, they do give you an option to purchase a parking pass which includes same day tickets for everyone inside a given vehicle. Parking is $30.
  • All outdoor gardens and areas on the National Mall belonging to the Smithsonian remain open, including the Haupt Garden, the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, and the Butterfly Walk.

    Port Discovery Childrens Museum is all about indoor play and learning for children from babies to age 10. It has modified some exhibits to ensure the safety of visitors and added some new activities, such as a puppet making station and a Shadow Puppet Theater.     The Smithsonian Has Closed Some Museums And Scaled Back Hours At Others

    Positive coronavirus tests have led to severe staff shortages at the Smithsonian. In early January, the Smithsonian announced it was temporarily closing some museums and scaling back opening hours at others. On Jan. 15, it extended those cuts indefinitely.

    Three museums are closed: TheNational Air and Space Museum, the Anacostia Community Museum and the National Postal Museum. The Air and Space Museum is scheduled to reopen on March 3, before closing again on March 28 for scheduled renovations, which are expected to be completed in the fall.) The three big museums on the Mall American History, Natural History and African American History and Culture are open five days per week. American History is open Friday through Tuesday, while the latter two are open Wednesday through Sunday.

    Most other facilities, including the National Zoo, the Hirshhorn and the National Portrait Gallery, are now open Thursday through Sunday.     The pandemic isnt yet over, but D.C. is unquestionably reopening. On May 21, Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted capacity restrictions at most venues, including restaurants, schools, offices, and retail. On June 11, restrictions will be lifted for nightclubs and entertainment venues. If you havent noticed, local music venues are booking shows for the coming months, theaters are preparing to offer live performances, and museums on the Mall and elsewhere across the city are welcoming patrons back . Yesterday afternoon, the Smithsonian announced reopening dates for its 10 museums that remained closed to the public the entire system will be open to visitors for the first time since March 2020 at the end of August.     The CDC says that indoor and outdoor activities pose minimal risk to fully vaccinated people, COVID-wise, and that those fully vaccinated people are probably not going to get the unvaccinated in their lives sick either.
