The Cradle of Aviation Museum’s first curator, William K. Kaiser, participated in an aviation first as one of the pilots on the first transatlantic crossing of non-rigid airships in 1944 as a young ensign in the United States Navy. DAYTON, Ohio – They dont have the sleek looks of a fighter jet, the dangerous payload of a bomber, or the eye-popping size of a heavy-lift cargo plane. But Americas fighters, bombers, and massive cargo carriers wouldnt get too far without the Air Forces fleet of tanker planes.

Now, a KC-135 has been added to the Air Forces official museum, the first Stratotanker to be so honored.

There are a ton of great air museums all over the world, from the Royal Air Force Museum in London to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona and the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington, DC. There’s a case to be made, however, that the best of them all is in Dayton, Ohio. There on the grounds of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the National Museum of the US Air Force has a massive collection of rare and important aircraft from the entire history of aviation.

It’s spread across five hangars, with hundreds of aircraft, and I spent an entire day exploring the museum during my 10,000-mile road trip. Honestly, I could have spent another day or three. Here’s a look in and around some of the highlights of the museum.

History Of The American Airpower Museum

Over 90 years ago, the current home of the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport was established as Fairchild Flying Field and its aircraft manufacturing added the Farmingdale Airfield to a long legacy of people, places, and companies that would make New Yorks Long Island the cradle of American Aviation. In 1932 Aircraft Engineer, and pilot, Leroy Grumman would establish Grumman Aircrafts first major facility at what was now the former Fairchild Field and design some of the aircraft and systems that would catapult his company to success as WWII fast approached.

Pre-War Seversky Aviation approximately where Conklin Ave meets the Republic Strip Mall today.

At the same time noted aviator, and aircraft designer Alexander P. de Seversky, who would be a great proponent of American air power during WWII, would cement his presence in the area with the establishment of Seversky Aircraft Corp. at the Farmingdale Airfield in 1936. Grumman would depart in 1937 to establish its now famed Bethpage Airfield and Aircraft plant while Seversky would eventually be removed from his own company, that would become the legendary Republic Aviation and marked the birth of one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the Arsenal of Democracy as the United States entered World War II.

The Airfield would be known as Republic Field and become the massive home to the Republic Aviation plant, where over 9,000 P-47 Thunderbolts would be produced during World War Two.

The KC-135 tankers essentially serve as flying gas stations. They are capable of refueling other aircraft in mid-air, significantly extending the reach of those planes and by extension the United State military.

File: A KC-135 from MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa refuels the USAF Thunderbirds in 2014.

Boeing delivered the first KC-135 based on the companys 707 passenger plane to the Air Force in 1957 and the grey four-engine planes have served as the USAFs primary refueling aircraft ever since. Most of the fleets 732 planes have been in service for decades, though they have received significant upgrades through the years.

The KC-135s are slowing being phased out in favor of the more modern KC-46 Pegasus aircraft, which is based on Boeings 767 passenger jet.
