The Secret Code Of The Hobo

Beginning in the 1880s, a hobos mark was placed on fences, posts, sidewalks, buildings, trestles, bridge abutments, and railroad line side equipment to aid them in finding help or avoiding trouble. At the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, you can explore more than 150 years of that history through unique artifacts, precious photos and several interactive digital displays. “We really enjoyed our visit. The displays were so well done & informative. There was something for everyone’s interest.” – Glennda & Peter from Sydney, Australia “All the antiques were really neat. Questions & Answers

History Of Union Station

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, creating the Union Pacific Railroad and fixing its eastern terminus at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The major goal of Union Pacific was to lay railroad tracks west to join up with the Central Pacific Railroad and complete the first railway from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean the Transcontinental Railroad. Because there was no bridge across the Missouri at that time, construction started at 7th and Davenport Streets in Omaha and headed west.

Several railroad stations came and went in Omahas early years. Construction of Union Station, which today houses The Durham Museum, commenced on July 29, 1929 on the site of the 1899 station. Rapidly increasing passenger rail traffic convinced Union Pacific of the need for a new building and it was decided a truly elegant and contemporary structure would best portray the image of the corporation.

Gilbert Stanley Underwood, one of the finest architects in the classic art-deco style, was given free rein in designing the structure and his style is reflected in every facet of the construction. He utilized a terra cotta exterior overlay to create a visually stunning effect and was involved in all artistic decisions from the ceiling of the Main Waiting Room to the door handles on the ticket counter. Peter Kiewit Sons was commissioned to build Underwoods steel framed structure. After twenty months and $3.5 million, the 124,000 square-foot building was complete.

Connecting East To West Through Wallace

The construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad was an arduous task. Scouting favorable routes through valleys and over mountain ranges proved to be a formidable challenge for railroad surveyors and engineers. Bridges had to be built, tunnels driven, and construction materials delivered. Many of the routes we drive today are owed to the skillful surveyors, engineers, and laborers of the Northern Pacific.

Making The Grade Climbing Lookout Pass

Union Pacific 428 Restoration

With the construction of Interstate 90 , todays automobile route over Lookout Pass is much more direct. Northern Pacific trains headed west following a more circuitous route up the pass. The tracks ran along gentler grades, ranging from 2% to 3.5% to accommodate their heavy loads. This animation gives a unique perspective of the route up to the top of Lookout Pass before its descent into Idaho and on into the Wallace Depot which was the terminus of this Northern Pacific rail spur.

National Parks If You Build It They Will Come

While the Northern Pacific Railroad established routes that moved people and commerce westward, it also allowed for the growth of tourism. With the advent of the rails, Americans were free to visit the wonders of the National Parks located out west. Railroads quickly realized the beautiful scenery along their passenger routes would attract interest. Destination travel from point A to point B was quickly eclipsed by thousands of tourists from the east wanting to experience the National Parks.
