Manhunt continues for MoMA stabber museum preps to reopen

2 to 3 hours

For some, art is at its most potent when it addresses the vital questions of the day and introduces new techniques and responses to what has gone before. Happily, there is no better place to find such innovative, imaginative contemporary art than MoMA.

Start with a step into history to see some of the 20th centurys most influential modern art movements. In the aftermath of World War II, the Abstract Expressionists pushed the boundaries of abstract art, shaping the form to express profound human values. Immerse yourself in the Action Painting rooms and youll feel the shocking power of Abstract Expressionism even now.

To experience the cutting-edge of contemporary art, visit the 2nd floor for the 1970s Present collection. This whole floor is dedicated to the most groundbreaking art of today, from architecture and design for living to sculptures created from found materials.

Why should the early adopter spend two to three hours at MoMA? MoMA is a temple to provocative modern art and its 1970s Present collection deserves two to three hours of attention.

Dont forget to check MoMAs opening hours and book your entrance in advance!

Salvador Dalí is from the surrealism era of art, a movement categorized by dream-like depictions using various contrasting elements. His 1931 Persistence of Memory painting is not to be missed, and some say its what made the painter famous during his lifetime. Located on the MoMAs fifth floor, it features a scene on a desolate coastal beach thought to be inspired by his native home in Catalonia, Spain, and multiple melting clocks on hard surfaces.

Andy Warhol is arguably one of the most famous pop artists of all time. His Campbells Soup Cans is a series of 32 paintings of the Campbell Soup Companys primary product and takes up an entire wall on the MoMAs fourth floor. Warhol painted them in 1962, basing them on the lunch he would have every single day for twenty years. The simple yet striking work is so famous that its been printed on various forms of merchandise in droves over the years.

One: Number 31 By Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was part of the abstract expressionist movement and frequently created his work by splashing paint onto canvases using different tools. Sometimes, he would even pour it straight out of the can onto the surface. In 1950, Pollock painted One: Number 31, which sits on a huge canvas taking up an entire wall in the MoMA. The piece displays a splatter of various colors that somehow convey a sense of unease and urgency.

Cezannes The Bather. Photo: Jeff Dobbins

Paul Cezanne The Bather: Gallery 1 One of Cezannes most evocative figure paintings, the introspective young man seems to be stepping out of the bare landscape. The work combines Cezannes interest in artistic tradition and modernity. In same gallery, look for the artists Self-portrait in a Straw Hat.

Paul Gauguin The Seed of the Areoi: Gallery 1 one of Gauguins finest paintings from his excursion to Tahiti. It depicts a primitive paradise, free of the corruption of modern Europe. As you progress through the galleries, note how Gauguins use of bright, flat colors influenced other artists.

Vincent Van Gogh The Starry Night: Gallery 1 certainly one of the stars of the museums collection. The canvas depicts a turbulent sky over Saint-Remy, where Van Gogh was confined to a mental asylum during his final days. The roiling energy of the sky, intense color and exploding stars are believed to evoke the artists emotional state. Van Gogh once said, Looking at the stars always make me dream.

Marc Chagall I and the Village: Gallery 3 this painting evokes the Russian village of Chagalls boyhood, where peasants and animals live in harmony. The works angles and lines were inspired by Cubism. The flowering sprig at the center symbolizes the tree of life.

The Artists Cultural Prominence Has Hardly Diminished In The Decades Since His Death In 1987

You should plan to visit more than once anyway. MoMAs curators will be regularly rotating the collection displays come April, all 20 of the westernmost galleries will be rehung.

Im still in the lobby, and Im confused. Which way do I start?

Id suggest starting on the east side of the museum. Take the escalators or elevators to the fifth floor, where the chronological display of the collection begins. Youll see Cézanne and van Gogh with new company, and then discover Lime Kiln Club Field Day , the first feature-length film with an African-American cast.

The galleries are numbered, so you can work counterclockwise, moving from the older building into the new wing and back. If youre enjoying the chronological approach, you can do it again on the fourth floor and the second floor .

Tell me the three collection galleries I absolutely cannot miss.

Gallery 503 features the knockout juxtaposition of Pablo Picasso with two later American artists, Louise Bourgeois and Faith Ringgold.

Some galleries have funny names. What kind of a title is Stamp, Scavenge, Crush?

What You Can Skip

Photo: MoMA Learning

Everything at the MoMA deserves special attention in its own right. Still, Roy Lichtensteins art may not appeal to some, as the infamous pop artist appropriated images from various comic book artists without ever giving them credit. Lichtenstein had a very particular brand of pop art, which would take images and parody them in a comic strip style. An example of this is his 1963 work Drowning Girl, which takes an image from Run for Love! a story in DC comic book Secret Love #83. In the work, Lichtenstein cropped the image, so it focused on the woman rather than the whole image, and changed the dialogue in the speech bubble.
