George Lucass New Museum Breaks Ground In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES After several years of planning and proposals in different cities, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, funded by the Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas, broke ground on Wednesday on a new building here that its leaders predict will take about four years to complete.

Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the museum will occupy a corner of Exposition Park, an urban hub near the University of Southern California that already contains three museums and which beat out a proposed island site in San Francisco a year ago. Paul Hernandez, a museum spokesman, declined to release projected building costs since it is a private project without any government subsidies, but the full museum project has been estimated at $1 billion.

The groundbreaking, with appearances by Mr. Lucas, Mayor Eric Garcetti and others, included the unveiling of a flashy new maquette that highlights plans for a parklike museum setting: 11 acres of green space created by taking over two parking lots and building underground parking instead. The rooftop of the new building will also have a garden and public terraces.

The museums core collection consists of artwork that Mr. Lucas has acquired, initially on his own and more recently with his wife, Mellody Hobson, in the fields of 20th-century American illustration and comic books, as well as costumes, storyboards, stage sets and other archival material from his movies.

Originally Planned For Chicago Lucas Museum Gives The Comic

SAN DIEGO Superheroes and big-name TV and film franchises dominated Comic-Con in San Diego last week, but one discussion early on sought to elevate the fan-driven bonanza with a look at different art: Curators from the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art hosted a morning panel that gave a peek at the holdings of the $1-billion project coming to L.A.’s Exposition Park.

The museum was originally to be built near Soldier Field in Chicago, but the plan was dropped in June of 2016 after months of debate and controversy.

A 30-minute slide presentation provided a brief snapshot of what will be in the museum — a collection, curators said, that will include the poetic paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the bright and rounded comic art of graphic novelist Chris Ware and the work of celebrated L.A. muralist Judy Baca. The pieces that generated oohs and ahhs from the San Diego audience, however, were of a more pop variety, namely those connected to the Star Wars franchise.

Would the museum, one fan asked, sell limited-edition “Star Wars” prints signed by George Lucas?

But how the gift shop will be populated wasn’t the focus of curators Erin M. Curtis, Anastasia James and Ryan Linkof, who instead sought to lay out the mission of the Lucas Museum. The building broke ground in March 2018 and is aiming for completion in 2021 it will contain at least two restaurants, two theaters and 11 acres of green space, not to mention plenty of holdings from a galaxy far, far away.

Twenty Pieces From George Lucass Art Collection

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will bring a massive 11 ...

I wanted to deal with a great artist, Lucas said. It was very exciting for me to do something from scratch.

But when the architects came to a conference room in Hobsons Chicago office to present their ideas, only one of them really excited Lucas and Hobson. It was a design that looked like a computer-generated curving mountain, and it was the work of Ma Yansong, a 38-year-old architect who had studied at Yale and worked for Zaha Hadid before he went home to China to open his own office in Beijing.

There was a gaspwe knew that was the building, Hobson said. We loved itit was stunning.

We said we wanted a work of art, no constraints, and this was the only one that was iconic, Lucas said.

Iconic it may have been, but it would not turn out to be any easier for Lucas to sell in Chicago than his Beaux-Arts design had been in San Francisco. Blair Kamin, the Chicago Tribune architecture critic, called it a cartoonish mountain of a building that would be glaringly out of place amid the horizontal sweep of Chicagos lakefront. Overly abstract and under-detailed, it looks, from some angles, like a giant lump.

Our issue was time, Hobson said. Eventually we would have won, but George said, Im 72 and I want to see this building built. We loved that building.

The totality of this modern container holding art of the past surelyembodies Lucass worldview.

Its Not Just A Star Wars Museum

Sure, the museum will hold Star Wars memorabilia, but the collection will be a lot bigger and more varied than that. Curbeds Urbanism Editor Alissa Walker wrote about the collection for Gizmodo in 2014, saying it will focus on the power of a single image to tell a story, inspire emotion, or encapsulate universal truths. She noted that Lucas is a longtime collector of Norman Rockwell paintings, and those, along with other works from his personal trove will serve as the seed for the museums collection.

San Francisco Chronicles Charles Desmarais says he was the first journalist to take an extensive look at the look at the collection. He has said it could be the start of a wonderful museum. But other critics arent impressed. The Los Angeles Times Christopher Knight has taken to calling it the Treacle Museum.

Lucas Museum Opening Delayed To 2023 Thanks To Covid Slowdowns

LAs Academy Museum brings Hollywood to life

MAD Architects and Stantecs swooping Lucas Museum of Narrative Art was supposed to have been a 2022 triumph after shifting from Chicago to Los Angeles in 2016 over on-the-ground pushback, the museum was on track to hit its major construction milestones later this year. Now, as first reported by the New York Times, the opening has been postponed a year to 2023.

The curvilinear museum broke ground in L.A.s 160-acre Exposition Park in 2018 and the rising spaceship -like form of the building instantly added a unique icon to the area. As Shane Reiner-Roth pointed out, the 185-foot-wide archway at the buildings center helps open and lighten the massing of the 115-foot-tall Lucas Museum to avoid overshadowing the park it sits in. An undulating, and at points, occupiable, rooftop landscape will connect with and provide views of the greenery below, while the glass fiberreinforced plastic panels used for the buildings facade were light and pliable enough to realize the unique form while still allowing for use of a base isolation system to help resist seismic events.

Once complete, patrons will be treated to a history of narrative storytelling drawn from George Lucass sprawling collection of 100,000-plus paintings, photographs, murals, sculptures, multimedia works, and pretty much every other artform.

George Lucas Museum Moves Toward Final Act

Thu December 05, 2019 – West Edition #25Chuck Harvey CEG Correspondent

The spirit of Star Wars is taking form in a huge $1.5 billion spacecraft-like structure called the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Exposition Park in Los Angeles.

The futuristic museum building is even being built using highly modern equipment, including robots and drones. Robots will do some heavy lifting and moving of materials and drones provide a better picture of the construction process.

The drones can provide improved surveying of the land for starters.

With excavation completed, the project has moved into its major construction phases. Although much work remains, walls can be seen now inside the structure. The walls separate two different theaters.

Construction crews expect to complete by late 2021.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said during a recent visit to the construction site that beyond the museum’s legacy, the building will be a symbol of LA’s resurgence and economic viability.

“This represents a more than $1 billion investment in Los Angeles, Garcetti said.

Garcetti has described the museum as an architectural wonder, a cultural treasure and a center of storytelling and creativity at the heart of a reimagined Exposition Park.

Lucas is using the power, creativity and magic of modern-day construction to bring the best of his works, including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, to a scholarly, but fantasy-filled public museum.

The Star Wars Museum Will Officially Call Los Angeles Home

The force, it seems, was with Los Angeles. And San Francisco was left on the dark side.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas and his team were on the side of the City of Angels over the City by the Bay on Tuesday, choosing LA as the home of a museum that will showcase his life’s work along with a huge collection of exhibits on film history and art.

After what organizers called “extensive due diligence and deliberation,” they announced that the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will be built in Exposition Park, where it will sit alongside the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Science Center, which houses the space shuttle Endeavour.

Lucas has been trying to build the museum for nearly a decade and is financing the project by himself with plans to spend over $1 billion.

It had several possible locations, but the choice eventually came down to perpetual rivals in Northern and Southern California.

San Francisco offered Treasure Island, with its scenic views in the middle of the bay, as a home that the museum would have had virtually to itself.

The museum will house Lucas’s personal collection, which includes 40,000 paintings, illustrations and film-related items including storyboards and costumes from “The Wizard of Oz,””Casablanca” and, of course, “Star Wars.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti emphasized that it would not be just “a Star Wars museum.”

We Timed The Countdown To The Inauguration Of What Will Be The Museum Of The Century Which Will Keep The Legacy Of The Legendary George Lucas

The Force Is With Los Angeles: Lucas Museum of Narrative ...

I have marked a very particular date on the Google calendar. It is something that I usually do, writing down in a favorite place the celebration of an important event that will take place in a while. This time it is January 15, 2021 That day I will check how the construction of the Museum of the Century is going, the George Lucas Museum.

Where will it be? The museum, called the Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts, was designed to be built in Chicago in 2014, but they had legal issues with the location, with the architects original design, which was deemed overly ostentatious by the Chicago Tribune, and with some associations of the place. In the end, they modified urban patterns to accommodate the museum, even Frank Gehry publicly endorsed the project, and the city council approved the construction. Sometime later, Lucas decided to take his project to another city, to Los Angeles, where he was welcomed with open arms.

The design changed before leaving Chicago, transforming its ostentatious dome into a floating park, where visitors can stroll in green areas and enjoy views of the Los Angeles Exhibition Park. This year the foundation stone was laid and we could see how the citys mayor, Eric Garcetti, the museums governing board, co-founders George Lucas and Mellody Hobson and some other politicians, raised the famous shovel that gave way to the construction of the building at last March 14.

Exhibits Will Feature Memorabilia From Classic Films

It will feature all forms of narrative storytelling, said the museum’s president, Don Bacigalupi. He said its exhibits will include story boards, costumes, props and various other elements that went into making Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz and other classic films.

And, yes, there will be plenty of cool Star Wars stuff there too.

“Everything from Luke Skywalker’s first lightsaber to Darth Vader’s costume and helmet,” said Bacigalupi.

The Lucas-Steven Spielberg Indiana Jones films also will be represented.

Numerous interactive programs for children, film students, academics and others will be offered.

Lucas said he hopes the museum will serve as inspiration to people of all ages, but especially to children, encouraging them to create a better world.

Popular art, he said, is the glue that holds people together, that teaches them that while we may have differences we have similar aspirations.

In addition to USC, the Museum of Narrative Art will be within close proximity to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the California Science Center and the California African American Museum.

Although Lucas’ affection for USC is clear he and his foundation have given the school tens of millions of dollars over the years it was once assumed he’d put his museum in his hometown of San Francisco. Or if not there, then his wife’s hometown of Chicago.

“And then we said, ‘All right, let’s clear the boards and find a place that really wants it.”‘
