Twentieth Century: Furniture City

Ultimately, the Christian Reformed Church where the majority of striking workers congregated and the whose reverend feared the loss of contributions from the wealthy furniture businessmen lead opposition to the strike, which resulted in its end on August 19, 1911.

Under the watchful eyes of the public several segments were lifted out of the Wall at Potsdamer Platz in November 1989. One of which was inscribed with Meijer. As Frederik C. H. Meijer, owner of a supermarket chain in Grand Rapids got aware, he got at once in contact with the Berlin Wall Commemorative Group to secure his segment, which he donated to the Van Andel Museum Center in Grand Rapids.
Other segments, Meijer also acquired via the Berlin Wall Commemorative Group, were donated to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum and Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids.

Voigt House Victorian Museum
The museum also maintains the Voigt House Victorian Home, located at 115 College Ave. SE. The Voigt House was the residence of the Carl Voigt family for over 76 years. Donated to the Grand Rapids Foundation upon the death of the youngest child Ralph Voigt in 1971, the property came into the eventual possession of the museum. The Voigt house is a time capsule to the late Victorian era, having never been remodeled by the family over the decades.
Years Of Van Andel Arena History Going Into Grand Rapids Public Museum Archive
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The Van Andel Arena opened its doors to the public a little over 25 years ago. As part of their landmark West Michigan venue’s anniversary celebration this year, they have donated their archives to the Public Museum of Grand Rapids.
The venue will work alongside the City Archives and Research Center, where the materials are now physically located, throughout the year to preserve and later digitize everything so it can be made available to the public via their digital collections.
It includes video and photographs and memorabilia from… hundreds of different athletes and performers and comedians and all the different wonderful entertainers that have come to Grand Rapids to the Van Andel Arena, said Alex Forist, the chief curator at the public museum.
Things like bobble heads from the different Grand Rapids Griffins players, you know, different premiums and giveaways from over the years. There’s a championship ring here that I think is pretty cool, from 2017.
The City Archives holds the public museum’s vast collection over a quarter of a million items and artifacts inside a fairly large building on Washington Street downtown.
With a collection like this, it may seem like it’s… only 25 years old does that even belong in the museum? Well, what we know from our experiences, it’s way easier to collect and to document a collection like this now when the people are still around to share their stories about it, Forist said.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum, located on the bank of the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, is among the oldest history museums in the United States. It was founded in 1854 as the “Grand Rapids Lyceum of Natural History“. The museum includes a cafe, a gift shop, and a 1928 Spillman carousel, which is situated in a pavilion over the Grand River. A Wurlitzer #157 Band Organ that plays 165 rolls provides the carousel’s music. The Museum building also houses the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium. The current Pearl Street N.W. location, built in 1994, replaced the former Art Deco location on Jefferson Avenue S.E. that building now serves as a High School and is connected to the GRPM Collections and the City of Grand Rapids Archives.

Youll be looking in vain for the Rapids piece of the citys name, but look no further than the imposing Public Museum/Van Andel Museum for a bit of grandeur. The grand staircase sweeps visitors up to the second and third floors, with a grandiose view of the Grand River flowing below. Before you even hit the staircase, look up and gaze at the majestic, 76-foot fin whale skeleton floating above. Its one of the most complete and largest whale skeletons on exhibit anywhere. Other highlights include a reconstruction of an early furniture factory, a tour through Michigans natural habitats, and detailed re-creation of Grand Rapids in the 1890s. Before leaving, give the 1928 working Spillman carousel a whirl , and dont forget a visit to the cosmos at the extensively remodeled Chaffee Planetarium . The Museum also hosts regular top-notch rotating exhibits.
Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children. The museum is open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Grand Rapids has several popular concert venues in which numerous bands have performed, including 20 Monroe Live, the DAAC, the Intersection, DeVos Performance Hall, Van Andel Arena, Royce Auditorium in St. Cecilia Music Center, Forest Hills Fine Arts Center, The Pyramid Scheme, and the Deltaplex.
